Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection

For an optimal experience, we recommend a broadband connection of 1.5Mbps. (For reference, the average global internet connection speed as measured recently by Akamai was 2.9 Mbps). In areas where an Ethernet connection is not available, you can connect using mobile broadband.

While a persistent connection is not required, Xbox One is designed to verify if system, application or game updates are needed and to see if you have acquired new games, or resold, traded in, or given your game to a friend. Games that are designed to take advantage of the cloud may require a connection.

With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies.

At Xbox, we’ve always believed in a connected world of games and entertainment. With Xbox One, we are planning for a connected future. We can’t wait to show you what’s to come.
If this is real this could be a big mistake for Microsoft

Sounds fine to me. I can still buy used and trade in, and let a friend borrow a game. Granted, there may be a few extra hoops to jump through, but the ability remains intact. This "10 family member" thing intrigues me. Can I just have a friend who buys a lot of games be one of my family members and then have access to all his games from my house, and vice versa?

It would be nice if there was a way to let you play a game that has already been linked to your account from the home console from the disc even if it hasn't checked into MS for 24 hours. Maybe give a period of a handful of days or a week or something.

Personally though, I will trade having to check in every 24 hours for the ability to download and play any game in my library from another console with me just logging in.

Lol, and of course Kotaku is already slamming all of the info from Microsoft. Seems like this is all pretty much positive news to me, with the possible exception of being online every 24 hours. Honestly though, in this day and age, if you can't hop online with your home console once a day, then maybe you shouldn't be next-gen gaming.

That's what I was thinking. If the disc is physically in the console, that 24 hour limit should be lifted entirely. Otherwise, a 24 hour "hello world" heartbeat isn't so bad...

I can't wait to be able to play any installed game at will, without having change discs.

Yeah, I'm a lazy bitch. #dealwithit

The problem is I could use the license tool to "give" away my copy. They download the game and play it on the license. If I have the disc and could play indefinitely offline then I have effectively made a copy. And that they want to avoid.

Now, I wonder if "family members" sharing an account and library can play the same game at the same time. That would be an improvement in a two console household.

So with a 500gb hard drive, how many games are we thinking can be stored on the system at once? 15 or so?

Also, what is the incentive to buy a game digitally if you are stuck with it forever? Are they going to sell them cheaper?

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection

Are you expecting the games to be between 30 and 50 gigs each installed?

Probably not at launch, but definitely by the 3rd year.

But, fret not, by then you'll be able to upgrade to a Microsoft-branded 2TB hard drive for the small fee of $129.

That is cheap! SOLD!

I need to hear more exact details of how this will work before I decide to bite. There are still too many unknown variables.

However, this shared library thing may make it worth it, if my 10 family members are in fact 10 friends who are also gamers.

Exactly, this would be amazing. I assume only 1 person can be playing it at a time, but that is still fine for older games and offline games.

At participating, publisher-approved retailers. And if this generation of gaming has proved anything, it's that publishers always make great decisions with the best interests of consumers in mind!

Sounds like a good idea after reading all of the info.

Thought this was funny.

Too many dealbreakers for me. Unless there is an armada of exclusives this will be the first major system I pass on since the Saturn.

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection

I like the fact or at least it appears to be that MS will let the Publishers make the call on how used games will be handled. Neither MS or Sony should be put in that position since it's the Publishers and Devs who are wanting the restrictions put in place. However I'm sure not all Publishers or Devs have that..."screw the gamer and used games...we want more money" attitude.

Some will say screw you, pay up or don't play while some will say screw those extra fees and buy the game new or used. What will be interesting if this will cause gamers to shift loyalty to certain games based on how a Dev/Publisher handles used games.

Supermallet 06-06-13 06:52 PM

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection

To be fair, Sony has taken the same stance. First party games will not have restrictions, but third party publishers can put their own restrictions in place. In reality, it's no different than what EA did this gen.

What still bugs me is the "authorized retailers" thing. What if they decide Gamestop is authorized, but Amazon isn't? And if you buy a game digitally, is there no way to trade in the license for credit somewhere? Given that they said the disc is essentially a delivery system for "the bits", it should be no different than selling a digital license.

"Because every Xbox One owner has a broadband connection..."

Was it someone here who said that MS has made a console for the 1%? Sounds about right.

That is basically saying, if you don't have a broadband connection of at least 1.5 Mbps, then this console is not for you.

Now... will Sony be radically different? or have we moved into the Online Only Gen?

I don't think a gamer should be forced online, period.

Shocked at the first line.

I can almost hear the outrage.

But yeah, Microsoft is taking some risks here. I'm not affected at all by it. But I'm sure a lot of people will complain.

I can't wait for Sony details.

And price.

Well, it is true. Nice ideas for tying your games to your name. However, unless they have a seamless cloud network then playing these next gen games via your username on any console could all be a pipedream at best. Also, installing games that will likely take anywhere from 25gbs and up in size will make for some lengthy waiting to play your much anticipated titles.
