Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
Let's be realistic here. Other than a few titles that get a substandard 360 port, once the One comes out, it's over for big name titles on the 360.

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I guess I don't understand the economics of it all then. It seems to me that if 77 million consoles have been sold, it would still be worth focusing some energy on. Granted, many of those were repeat consoles, but even assuming there are 40 million Xbox 360s out there, it'll still be tens of millions more units than the new one for awhile. Surely that would be enough of a market to keep making top-tier titles. What am I missing here?

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I think we will still see a good number of games being released for the current gen after the Next-Gen consoles are released.
There is a huge installed base, but the biggest negative is that they would have to work on 2 different versions of the game, or sublet it to another company, which usually means that one version will not be as good as the other. |

Sony supported the PS2 up until this year, so I expect the 360 and PS3 to still be supported anywhere from 2015 to 2017. |

And oh yeah, the new consoles could mean great news for the PC. |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
About the only games you can look forward to after the x1/ps4 launch are sports games & licensed games(and maybe XBLA/PSN titles that have been in the works for awhile). With yearly releases, the sports games are borderline shovelware to begin with, but it's just money in the bank for EA because of the large install base. Movie tie-ins are already looked down upon so a company will shit out 10 different versions regardless of quality. Parents and kids will buy them anyway.

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I still don't get why people are so surprised that the XBLA stuff doesn't transfer. It's a completely different system and the games aren't programmed for it. Including BC capabilities is no different if it's disc-based or hard drive-based and I really don't want to pay extra for them on top of the crazy price this thing is going to come in at.

Don't they all use the same os?
For the PS4 and Xbox One, they're both radically changing the CPU architecture of the system, which makes hardware backwards compatibility impossible unless they also include the PS3/360 CPU, which would drive up cost. Going forward, as long as they keep to the x86-64 CPU architecture, newer consoles should be able to be backwards compatible with the previous.

I doubt they wouldn't let keep playing games you've paid money for. Pretty sure that's illegal and they'd open themselves up to lawsuits if they did so. Maybe at that point, they'll just let you play whatever full-game you have downloaded into your machine without having be be logged into Live.
None of the 360 download content is going to carry over to the Xbone though (apparently). So it's not like PC, iOS, or Android where content carries forward after an upgrade. |

To be fair, Steam has managed to deliver a game to a user regardless of whether they're on one of three different platforms: Windows, OS X, or Linux. Now granted, only a select number of games are available on 2 of the platforms, let alone 3, but the support is there. And as a game gets a port to another platform, Steam gives that version free to previous purchasers of the game.

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I guess I don't get all the "free pass" thinking many of you have regarding digital content. I know I can keep my Xbox 360 to play those games -- and I will. I also realize that this is nothing more than a cash grab by MS to sell us the same shit for another generation. How hard would it be to allow us to play Pac Man CE on the X1? I get that in game content can't be re-downloaded... but I guarantee there will be another version of Dragons Lair and Pinball FX.

That's nice. My point was people don't know or care about any of that stuff, they just think it's all "digital" so everything should work.
I do find it might interesting that 8 years ago the gaming community tore MS a new one for no BC yet praised Sony for having it. Now we are in the same spot, tearing MS a new one and we're just supposed to accept that "hardware blah blah blah" and "games are a license, we don't own anything" nonsense. |
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter is predicting a sub-$400 pricing scheme for the PS4 and Xbox One – $349.99 for the PS4 and $399.99 for Xbox One. That's it, I'm buying two of each. |

I don't disagree that consumers shouldn't feel like their getting shafted, but it's not as simple as believing its because Microsoft doesn't give a shit. That's silly. |

1) use software emulation to make all 360 games work (and knowing all the game specific compatibility issues that would come with it), or 2) the cost of including 360 hardware in each XBox One to accomplish it without consumers subsequently paying for it like the initial PS3. 3) Releasing a backwards-compatibilty add-on for those willing to pay extra for this feature. 4) Offering free upgrades to Xbone compatible versions of games as they're released (mainly XBLA material). There were rumors of option #3, being a set-top box with no disc tray that could play limited games and apps and network with the Xbone for backwards compatibility, called the Xbox Mini. http://www.vgleaks.com/microsoft-xbox-roadmap-2013/ |
