If they wanted to throw GS a bone they could perhaps give them an API that allows the store to authorize a copy to a user's account in store, with GS collecting cash from the customer and paying the authorization fee to MS.
GameStop's still enough of a powerhouse to not want to alienate them and giving them some sort of special role in dealing with used games would keep things rosy. It might also create a scenario where publishers could recoup royalties from used sales, which those companies would obviously love.

Letting individuals deauthorize and sell games on their own would cede the control that the new system would be established to create, so I don't see that happening. For that same reason, I think it's fairly safe to say that the only fee you're going to be able to pay to authorize a disc is to buy the game for MSRP. Again, that's all just personal speculation based on the info that's come out today.

If this fee puts Gamefly out of business, I will buy Microsoft a cake.

Looks good to me so far. I can see some people being turned off by the used games policy but I very rarely buy used games so it doesn't really bother me.

re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection

So if my kids have an Xbox One at their mom's house and at my house, can they play games at both locations? It sounds like there would be a fee required to play the game at my house if they played it at their mom's house first. Or will they be able to play it w/o a fee by signing into their Xbox live accounts at my house?

Another question that there is probably no answer for right now: Does the Xbox One work as a Windows Media Center extender?

I don't buy used games either, but I sell my games back. If I'm going to take a hit on selling a $60 game back, more than with this current generation, it definitely affects me as a consumer.

It sounds like it's only for installs of the games. I assume they'll still play off of a disk.

Any word on Live Arcade purchases? Every time I almost bought a 360, it was for Live Arcade...hoping that stuff carries over.

i dunno. with usb3, i'm going to guess you might be able to plug an external drive and maybe have multiple devices to save on. that's my guess.

I do like the physical design of the console. Maybe the best looking console ever from the perspective of an adult with an audio rack.

I assume it's standard 19-inch width.

re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection

Yeah, I'm most likely out on this next generation (and after relaying the information to a close friend, he is out too). There is no incentive right now to buy it. My old games are not compatible (not even Xbox Live Arcade) and most of the games I buy are clearanced which I don't know if some of us have figured this out, but clearance sales will be much harder to come by if they don't have to compete with used games anymore. I play a ton of games, because I buy lots of my games cheap...if I only have a handful of games to play, I get bored eventually. I really think Xbox One (and possibly PS4 and the Wii U as well) is going to fail or at the very least do terribly. There are way too people who will not buy a system if they can't buy used games. In all of the information presented here, I just don't see anything that makes me want to buy the new system.

BTW, Xbox One is a shitty name. Seriously. There is going to be a ton of confusion with the name.

Yeah I can see why some people might be upset. I don't really sell games either though unless it's something I really hate. Even then I rarely do since it hardly ever seems worth it to trade back for the small amount you get back.

The more I'm hearing about the One, the less excited I am about it. There's been a lot of shitty news coming down the pike since the conference ended.

BTW : Sony stock rose nine percent today after the Xbox One conference. Maybe unrelated, but still...

The game has to be installed to play it.

Yeah, hate to be that PC snob (well not really), but since getting mine almost 2 years ago, I haven't had any interest in consoles whatsoever. PC gaming is superior in every way. It's outrageous that it won't be BC with XBL and 360 games. Totally insane.

Only reason I'm following the console news is to see how powerful they will be, and what hideous DRM they have planned - to see where PC games will then be headed.

I think this console generation is critical in terms of defining the future of gaming. It's a totally different world than when the XBox 360 and PS3 launched. PCs are more competitive as gaming platforms, indie development has taken off, broadband is everywhere. I'm not positive about it.

Looks like the president of Gamestop was caught by "surprise" with this used game stuff on Xbox One: http://www.polygon.com/2013/5/21/435...-used-games-on

re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection

The way I could see the used game situation working is if the physical disc took precedence over the install, meaning that if the physical disc shows up in another system, the install on the previous system would be deactivated and unplayable until the disc is returned to that system. Now if you have the disc in the system, your install would not require an online lookup, but if you're playing strictly by install it would do a quick online check to make sure that 'copy' hadn't been tagged/deactivated. This is about the only way I can see it working that leaves the 'playing offline' option open but still offers a 'no-disc install' option that prevents someone from installing one copy on 20 friends' systems.

I saw the following quote on XBOX's FB page.

They called it Xbox One cause they just took 359 steps backwards.

As for the thread subject, this new XBox looks really interesting though I can't see how I could convince my wife this is worth the money for our family. We got the PS3 as a blu-ray player and then I started gaming. Now this has a blu-ray player, too, but I'm not sure I could get her to see how this or the PS4 could benefit us any more than my getting to play new games. Does anyone have ideas on how this or the PS4 can be sold to her or am I out of luck, here?

Wow, that design is terrible. It looks like two different cable boxes that were cut in half and the halves were put together. And it looks they seem to be going with a Rambo-like naming system for their systems now.

Sloppy reporting of them to add the adjective 'small' to the fee description, considering the Wired article they got the info from doesn't have that qualifier.
