I'm asking because they are different genres, other than being third person, there aren't any similarities between the franchises and they are not, in general, for the same kind of people.

Of course there's people like me that love both series.
Like Decker said, they are linear third-person cover shooters.

And to be absolutely clear, I did not say or have any intention of implying that Gears was shit. Gears is widely regarded as a solid series, and I love what they did with co-op. Unfortunately, I played it after playing Uncharted, so I found the environments a bit bland and the protagonists fairly uninteresting and unlikable.

What I didn't understand is how an objective person could love Gears and not at least enjoy a game that is similar at face value but with far better writing and acting, far more interesting characters, lush environments, and some light puzzle solving and platforming for variety. The series (or at least the Naughty Dog iterations) also has an average metascore of 93, which is completely absurd.

It was also generally a response to the type of comment I see on here a lot that goes something like:

Basically, if someone is going to tell me that LittleBigPlanet is the only good game on PS3, I reserve the right to be skeptical that they've given the system a fair shake.

I'm in the same boat. The first Dead Rising was the title that convinced me to jump into the current generation, and that new video makes me much more excited about it than before, but I'm not a fan of that look for this series. All these stylized 'color corrected' palettes are just overused all around (not just games, but movies and tv as well).

No preordered software for me. As crazy as it might sound, I would honestly be a bit surprised if I bought a single retail disk for my PS4 in 2013.

I could see me getting my kid a Vita for Christmas for remote play, and depending on reviews, I could see me maybe getting Battlefield 4, but I think it's far more likely that I just mess around with Demos, F2P and PS Plus freebies while finishing up some unfinished business on PS3.

I didn't dig into Ebay at all, but I was shocked that an aged title still held up for a solid price.

I personally pre-ordered: Call of Duty: Ghosts, DR3 and Watch Dogs for the XO... nothing for the PS4 yet.
Yep, saw a copy of Most Wanted for $40 in Gamestop over the weekend. I have a feeling that's one of the games that Gamestop destroyed their stock of a few years back, resulting in the prices you see now.

I find Gears more similar to Killzone (I have only played Killzone 2 in the PS3), although KZ is not a TPS. I don't even use cover that much in the Uncharted games!

About the other part of your message, this is a message board, 99% of the posts should be taken as opinions. It's perfectly normal that some people like some games and don't like some others. Sometimes is something as simple as... the controller! (I think the PS3 controller is fine)

I'm just preordering on Amazon, so I can pretty easily change my mind. There's no financial commitment or anything. I have my consoles preordered from there too, so it's just nice to get everything all at once.

Thematically, that's fair...or even moreso Resistance...shooting nameless space uglies in bland environments.

I used cover quite a bit in Uncharted, especially on the harder difficulty settings, and both games have sort of a "shooting gallery" quality to them. Anyway, I found them similar, others may not.

Tell me more about this "message board" thing.

Sure, all opinions are valid, but I reserve the right to have an opinion about how informed another opinion is.

I have my own issues with the PS3 controller. I actually prefer symmetrical sticks over offset, and I definitely prefer an internal battery, but the convex triggers and small grips are pretty bad. Thankfully both seem to be fully fixed on PS4. I actually bought those $5 clip-on triggers, though I only use them on a few games. I got them because Burnout Paradise was about to give me carpal tunnel!

Exactly. Someone saying they're not biased because they use the PS3 as a BD player and then dismissing the entire library is absurd. I'm VERY pro-360 over PS3, but there are plenty of great games on the PS3.

In four brief statements, I just pretty much just shit on all of Sony's PS3 exclusives.
In four brief statements, you just shit on 50% of all game genres. Unless of course the games are on 360, in which case your overall criticism of the genre magically dissipates.

There are more than enough exclusives out there to justify being a multi-console owner this generation, and I'm sure the same will be true for the next gen. But I don't see a compelling reason to buy both at launch.

This is what the PS controller should have been all these years (with rumble):

The reason is so you can justifiably bitch in both next-gen threads here, duh.

^^^ I can feel my hand cramping up just looking at that PS controller. *shudder*

PS4 controller looks very promising. Just wish they'd get with the times on the analog placement.

I was thinking it'd be more like a $40 DR3 "Off the Record" release.

Looking at my PS3 library, I don't think I could make that case. If I had been limited to only third party cross platform titles this generation, that would have accounted for probably 95% of my gaming, and if I hadn't gotten to play Uncharted or Ratchet & Clank, I'm sure I'd have been perfectly happy to fill that other 5% with Gears or Halo (random examples in both cases).

I think it makes more sense to get the console that has the types of exclusives you prefer and the feature set/business model that makes the most sense to you rather than spending $400-500 to play the few exclusives on the other system.

Granted, this is based on the individual and their ratio of time to money. I have tons of money but not enough time.

Why do you feel it would cramp? That controller was actually fairly larger than your average Dualshock. See the second controller shown in this video, he gives a size comparison:

Also, forgot this was the Xbox One thread. Sorry, don't lynch me!

That's the original analog (not DualShock) isn't it. I have one of those somewhere, and it's huge...probably 25-30% bigger than the DS3...which is to say that it felt great.

I just paid off nearly off my Xbox One preorder on Amazon. Only have $80 left to pay off. Bomb diggity.

Yeah, don't worry, we all are basically saying that the Xbox One controller "shits all over" the PS3/4 controller.

Until K&AJones posts an article claiming that the XO controller is made from the scalps of babies and dolphins, of course.

Which of course has some kind of a tie in to our military and a government conspiracy...
