Well, it depends. For many games, essentially all you're seeing is the tutorial, and it can be misleading.

Classic example is Brutal Legend -- the demo showed you the first part of the game, but ended before it got to the core gameplay, giving a highly inaccurate impression of what kind of game it actually was.

Last I read he was a Gamestop manager and got his inside info from the Gamestop dev showcases and ability to get into E3 through them.

He said he works at Sony (though I think he was a Gamestop manager before):

Quit Gamestop years ago, correct. Have nothing to do with Microsoft. Allowing a friend to try a demo, ridiculous.

"Wow, there are over 40 games I can just download to my Xbox One! Too bad I can only play demos of the two that my friend bought."

Yeah, seems totally plausible to me. Whether or not the Family Sharing was super fantastic or not, arbitrary timed demos on a handful of games it was not.

It does sound really dumb now that you say it like that, and nothing like the rest of their decisions to date.

I already explained why this is more of a draw than just a regular downloadable demo. It's still not an awesome feature, but then if family sharing was an awesome feature they would have talked it up a bit more, don't you think? Or did they want to save it in case there was backlash against the DRM? In which case, brilliant!

I have no idea what their plans were, but hopefully they actually bring it back for digital purchases only, to drive digital sales. Maybe the "timed demo", if partially correct, was some sort of time limit on the full game per day? For instance, I could only play my friends copy of Ryse for an hour a day, but unrestricted. This would also suck.

re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??

I was thinking it was 15 - 60 minutes per session with a finite number of sessions - at least that was the write up on pastebin which appears to be probablistically false.

Also I find a former GameStop employee having interest in what can be considered an anti-GameStop game console amusing

Gamestop was the worst company I have ever worked for, they can all go die in a fire. Worst...policies...ever. Hatred aside, the X1 probably would not have impacted GS much at all, since they could still sell the games new/used.

As an Air Force officer who has actually worked at Cape Canaveral's host base (2001-2003), I'll bet I'm closer to working at NASA than you are to working at Sony.

And I'm sure your employer doesn't mind you hanging out on an internet forum hyping up their direct competitor all day.

Pretty sure I'm allowed to like any product I want, regardless of where I may work
I haven't really said anything bad about the PS4, in fact all I have said is that I am buying one eventually.

  • Forcing a machine to check in every 24 hours, no matter what kind of game you were playing = ridiculous
  • Requiring high-speed internet even if you never want to game online = ridiculous
  • Allowing one "trade" of a physical disc = ridiculous
  • Region-locking a console so it won't work outside of 21 specific countries at launch (like Japan) = ridiculous

There was a LOT of ridiculous in the Xbox One plan. But you still think they were going to let you play your friends' games whenever you wanted without making a single purchase of your own? THAT is ridiculous.

Careful... this thread is a highway to the danger zone. You two better go cool off over some beach volleyball.

I don't think we should start up this discussion again and ruin the thread, but a lot of people, myself included, don't find many of your bullet points to be ridiculous and they actually what made us want the system in the first place.

All the future (possible) benefits far outweighed that simple internet check. Most people were ill informed about the trading, like yourself in that statement, since you can only trade something in one time regardless. I assume you meant "lending" the physical disc to a friend. Well, that is where the family sharing would have come in to play, making disc based lending obsolete.

Anyways, none of this will happen now, which sucks, but whatever. I'm still excited to play some new games on some new systems this fall. The one thing that the X1 better do is have a faster loading dashboard and apps. It takes me nearly 3-5 minutes to even access the HD to delete a saved game or look for an arcade game etc.

Back to real, new news!

Microsoft rumored to be announcing their indie self publishing plan on Wednesday in San Fran.

Internet sleuth Superannuation tweeted last night, “Some people seem to think Microsoft will announce some self-publishing/indie Xbox One stuff this week at their Build Developer Conference.”

Meanwhile, on the same subject, Markus “Notch” Persson tweeted “I know something about this, but I’m not allowed to say. “ The tweet has since been deleted.

They have always said that there is a plan in place for indie games, it will be interesting to see what they come up with. One of the best features of PS3/PS4 is all the quirky Japanese and indie PSN games. I really want to see these for the Xbox.

I know they are not planning on separating them from the other download games like they currently do.

Why do I foresee "Come makes games for the Xbox One! ... now look how easily they port over to Windows Phone 8!"

That's what I read, too. Everything should show up in "games" as opposed to "Indie" vs. "XBLA" or whatever. This might give some indie games more exposure, but could also cause confusion. Plus, some indie games are outright terrible, and it would be strange to see those next to other XBLA titles like Scott Pilgrim, the new Duck Tails, etc.

That's pretty much what we should expect. Xbox One ("arcade"), WP8, and Windows 8 games will likely all be programmed using the exact same tools, and therefore should be able to be ported to each platform relatively easily (depending on hardware requirements, of course). If MS lets a dev publish to all platforms for little extra cost, then it could boost interest in all of their platforms, not just the console. Not saying it'll work, but at the very least, it's a perceived benefit to releasing games in the MS ecosystem, and may or may not work in their favour.

Again with the cell phone app store model.

It would be nice if they could be more indie friendly. That is by far the biggest advantage the PS4 has over the Xbox One IMO.
