Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
If this reversal is true, then clearly they thought Sony was about to implement the same DRM they did. When they revealed that they weren't going to do any of it, MS had no choice but to totally reevaluate. I'm glad that's what they're doing. I was seeing a dumbass corporate pride mentality where they probably would have never backed off.

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I just lost a lot of respect for Microsoft. John Kerrysoft. Pfft.
If Microsoft would have done their presentation right and said "But just when you motherfuckers thought this was going to suck, check this out." boom - family sharing - it would have turned out differently. Instead they tried to sell shortcomings as features and treated everybody like they were tech morons. Microsoft essentially just tried selling the Xbox One like it was a mandatory Operating System upgrade. But in this world, their competition is cheaper, more powerful and didn't just talk down to their audience. |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
Funny considering this is happening as rumors are breaking out that Steam is going to start allowing users to share games.
Way to go at keeping GameStop open everyone.

Honestly, I think if MS got its way it would help GameStop. They could pay even less for the used games and sell them for just as much since people can no longer sell them on their own.

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
They can still absolutely follow a Steam-like model. It just sounds like they won't force everyone to do it.

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
This is great - the always online part was the worst for me.
That said, the cheaper price means I'll stick with a PS4 at launch. That's just reality. But if they do drop so much of this stupid stuff, I'll definitely pick up a One later on in the year. |

I would love it for consoles to be like that of Steam and the Xbox One was the closest for that dream becoming a reality. However, it doesn't look like it'll be the case. I'm sure more details will come soon when Microsoft's site goes back up, but I loved the idea I could access my games from anywhere/everywhere.

Sure it is. If this is true, then MS is doing the right thing and listening to their customers. What can we bitch about now? $100?
And forced Kinect TV overlay nonsense. |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
Sounds good to me. I'd rather them apologize and acknowledge that they listened to feedback, and I wouldn't hold it against them.

I overheard this today in Gamestop (dragged to the fucking mall to look at shoes and panties :grumble: ). I didn't hear the 5-7 number, but the employee did say that they weren't taking any more preorders for Xbone but that they were for PS4.
At the time I took it to mean that they had gotten overwhelmed with Xbone orders, but this makes more sense. |

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
here it is:
Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience. For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future. Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One. You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world. So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means: An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360. Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360. In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions. These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray. We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity. While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds. Thank you again for your candid feedback. Our team remains committed to listening, taking feedback and delivering a great product for you later this year. |

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I was hoping they'd keep sharing for downloaded titles but ah well.

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
No persistent connection means all that cloud processing of textures/trees/whatever goes away too, yes?
|
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
Good for them.
At the end of the day, even tone-deaf douchbag soulless empty suits will change their tune if they want to sell you shit. Still with PS4 despite having a fully open mind at the beginning of the year. |

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
So, they over-corrected. Don't they see the middle ground to usher in the age of digital distribution they so desperately want to pioneer?
