Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I believe it might be because of the licensing model they are using to enable the sharing and playing without the disc.
If you already traded in the license, then it doesn't really matter if you have the disc in the drive as you no longer own the game, just the disc. Without the online check, it cannot verify that you have a valid license/own the game. |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
Exactly right Mr. Music.
I don't agree with it, but without the 24 hour check, you could transfer your license to someone else permanently (ie: sale or trade), but keep your console offline for as long as you want, so you technically never gave up the ability to play it, even if it's no longer yours. |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
Two really dumb questions that I'm sure I could find answers to, but I haven't happened to stumble across them yet.
Will both systems do 3D BD? (I assume so, but I don't think I've seen it mentioned.) What's the benefit of the One's HDMI in, especially for someone with a receiver? I was a big fan of the 360, but trying to decipher everything post-E3 (and being without a gaming console for over a year now) is honestly a little confusing. I was initially just hoping to pick to a 360 on the cheap within the next few months to play a bunch of titles I missed initially, but I must admit these new consoles have me thinking that I may just wait a bit longer, spend a bit more, and hop on the next-gen train from the get-go. |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I haven't seen anything on 3D BD, but like you, I assume yes. As for the HDMI in, I personally wouldn't use it yet but the TV-in feature is the main reason. You can also plug in your pc or something and watch tv and browse the internet on your tv at the same time with the picture-in-picture snap mode stuff.

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
Good question about 3D Blu-ray. I haven't seen it mentioned either.
The HDMI in is specifically for connecting your cable box to the One, so they run on the same input to your TV or Receiver. Major Nelson hinted that it could be used for other HDMI devices if you don't have a cable box, but that's not confirmed. |

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
HDMI-in just works like Google TV - basically you'll feed a video source in (any video source, doesn't have to be a cable TV box, though it's intended for cable TV) and the Xbox One will be able to switch to that video input at any time, on the fly.
This way you don't have to change video modes and simply use your Xbox as an overlay of sorts. You can receive calls on Skype, get messages from friends, you can browse the internet in a window and see what's on TV and have the Xbox One change the channel via an IR blaster. It basically turns your TV into a Smart TV that can also play current gen games. It will likely work very similarly to: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/TNOsB8tRmWU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> It's actually a great feature to add into a game console, especially if they just added a mic into the Xbox One controller and skipped Kinect. |

The ET phone system would have been contacted so if another person tried to use it the license would not be useable until the old system was talked to and confirmed as now being a shared game. |

Either way the used game market is going to be a clusterfuck of assholes selling their Xbox One games, not deactivated. Being a game console there are certain expectations, people will get taken advantage of, initially at least. If you recall, both the Xbox and Xbox 360 had an abundance of piracy issues, Playstation 3 evaded it for a long, long time. |

My understanding of the trade-in policy is that once you bring the game to the retailer (Gamestop), they deactivate it via their computer system during the trade-in process. They kind of already do something similar with all of their phones and crap, to make sure they can be resold.

Yeah true, wish I played games that quickly. Have they mentioned anything new about rentals?
|
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
Not that have seen, just that rentals are not available at launch. I could see maybe a Gamefly partenership but that's about it as far as renting goes.

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I'd like to see how my DVR works with the XO. Most IR blaster implementations don't work very well, like GoogleTV. I'm sure live TV is fine but access to my recorded shows will surely be wonky.
What would be crazy is connecting the PS4 to the XO's HDMI input. Then split screen games accoss two consoles. |

Amazon poll shut down early after PS4 grabs 95% of the votes
http://www.cinemablend.com/images/se..._one_56766.jpg With nearly 95% of the vote (approximately 94.7% in favor of the PS4) Amazon has decided to end the user poll between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 early. Back on June 13th the marketplace giant ran a Facebook poll to see which one consumers were more interested in between Microsoft and Sony's consoles and it appears that gamers have spoken quite loudly with their Facebook voting. For now, the final numbers read 38984 votes in favor of the PlayStation 4 with only 2162 votes in favor of the Xbox One. Does anyone know how many employees work at Microsoft? Originally, the poll was supposed to run for a week and end on June 20th, giving gamers plenty of time to cast a vote and comment in favor of the console they were most looking forward to. Unfortunately, Amazon cut the poll short after there was a massive and clearly lopsided showing of favoritism for one product over the other. This could also be an easy indicator for companies to use as a gauge for the potential purchasing habits of gamers and casual consumers alike for this fall. Thinking about this logically, there's no real reason as to why Amazon would have wanted to end the poll early given all the free publicity and traffic they were receiving from the unbiased and very public escapade. That is, unless things were cut short, potentially, under coercion from upper management? In reality, the poll was definitely generating a lot of media buzz, especially from gaming outlets who covered the lopsided-as-a-poorly-done-boob-job poll, with an obvious reporting slant given in favor of Sony's upcoming PlayStation 4. It's not unlikely that the whole event could have incurred the intervention of reputation management agents, perhaps? Personally, I really wanted to see what the voting habits were going to be like at the end of the official session between both consoles, but I guess we'll have to settle for what they ended up with. Maybe the good folks at Forbes or Polygon can ping Amazon and find out what really happened? If I were a betting man I'd say a very nonsensical and boilerplate PR response is what we'll all end up with. Such is the fate of these kind of events during the propaganda-fueled warfare of corporate giants. |

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
Just shows how uninformed and quick to jump on a bandwagon most people are. Hopefully MS can do a much better PR job from now until launch. Either way 30k people means nothing on the way to 70 million consoles :)

Maybe because most, if not all of your posts in this thread have been anti-One, regardless if it is fact or opinion?

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I'm far less scorned than some of the people in this thread. I've owned an xbox and 360, but haven't owned a playstation since PS1. I'll be getting a PS4 though; and if you look at my playstation posts during their reveal, I thought it was terrible.
I feel like Microsoft deserves everything they're getting right now. They made the decisions to release a less powerful machine with more restrictions at a higher price  |
Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
Back on topic a bit, and after thinking about it for a few days, I kind of see it like this:
Sony played it safe and is basically releasing the PS3.5. It doesn't change anything really, but it improves the graphics etc. Fans will like this because it is familiar, but it may ultimately grow stale. Look at the Wii-U, which is just basically a suped up version of the Wii...same general idea. Microsoft is the only one that is truly innovating and moving into the next generation. Their system is fundamentally changing how we will purchase, play and share games. Not to mention integrating it into the home theater to be an all in one machine. Some of these features/requirements may seem strange or restrictive at first, and people are hesitant, but given time will grow to see the opportunities that exist. |
