re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I must say I am surprised that Microsoft is making that leap. My internet connection does decide to go in and out from time to time so I would never buy a console that required me to be online to use it.
Just like I would never buy a computer that would not work if the internet was not working. The one thing I hate about always online is what happened the other day when I lost my service and for a second thought I could fire up Diablo 3 then remembered it is always online and I could not play it.
Always online for every game would suck.

Apparently there is a new twist into the comments by Adam Orth by none other than Microsoft themselves....

Microsoft creative director doesn't get the 'drama' around an always-online Xbox

Update: Microsoft responds to Adam Orth's comments that customers were just going to have to deal with an always-online next-gen Xbox.
Update: Microsoft has commented on Adam Orth's comments. In a statement issued to GameSpot, a Microsoft spokesperson said "we apologize for the inappropriate comments made by an employee on Twitter yesterday. This person is not a spokesperson for Microsoft, and his personal views do not reflect the customer centric approach we take to our products or how we would communicate directly with our loyal consumers. We are very sorry if this offended anyone, however we have not made any announcements about our product roadmap, and have no further comment on this matter."

I'm confused, what's the twist? Standard PR distancing themselves from the fire.

I thought someone posted that yesterday, but I must have read it on a different site.

When i was without internet access for a week, i wanted to load up Tomb Raider single player. It was all downloaded and updated completely so i figured no problem. I start to launch it and got an error message. I had no idea you needed Steam to be Online to launch the game. So I go load up Skyrim. Same problem. No Torchlight, Saints Row 3, etc. etc. Every game on my PC unable to play
Looking into the matter you can play offline but only when you go into the settings menu but that was impossible since you need to be Online in order to do so! And it looks like Steam has no plans to fix this.
If the Next Xbox does this same bullshit I'm out.

Yeah, I remember back when Steam actually first launched, and I was trying to download/play something and their servers were slammed and I couldn't get in and/or play/download what I paid money for. So right then and there, I deleted Steam and never went back.

re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
But you don't need Steam to be active to play, just launch, right? Sounds a fuckton better that what MS is dancing around.

re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
You only actually need an internet connection with Steam one time. Launch steam, go online once, and activate offline mode. After that, you can play without an internet connection as much as you want.

re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
- Cheaper initial hardware cost
- Can sell games to recoup costs
- Can wait and buy used games to try titles of moderate interest on a budget
- Can still play if my crappy Brighthouse internet is down, which seems to happen at least once or twice a week
- Handful of exclusives (though this is substantially less significant than the others)
PCs tend to seem superior in any area not related to those points. I guess for me, the scales have always been tipped towards preferring consoles because of the above. If you wipe out 3 of the 4 biggest advantages they offer, the scales tip back to a PC being preferable.

I, for one, am shocked that a service was overloaded on day one. But it's pretty ridiculous to assume that's how the service is going to be forever. Steam is far faster and more reliable than Xbox Live and PSN.

meh. I'm not saying it's worse than PSN or XBL, but it was frustrating enough that one time that I just didn't want to deal with it again. I don't feel like I've missed out. Just a small example of how online connectivity, even on a limited extent, can cause customer dissatisfaction. Thanks to that one experience, I haven't spent a single dime on Steam.

re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
Honestly, I don't think always online is going to be enough to keep me away. I definitely don't like it, but it is going to be one of those inconveniences I'll learn to deal with, rather than a deal breaker. If this is something that the next Xbox uses. That said, I have zero brand allegiance, so it will be interesting to see which console has the features that win me over, since exclusive games are largely a thing of the past.

I'm sure I will get suckered into buying both of the Next-Gen consoles, like I have the previous years since the 5th generation.

re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection
I have been reading a few a few rumors (from sites that are normally very reliable) that the next Xbox will have an immortalizer. If this pans out, I will be getting both consoles. Eternal life and eternal power ftw.
One guy keeps telling me that Nintendo's forthcoming update for the Wii-U will allow owners to use the controller to control the minds of others. He's a Nintendo fanboy, though, so I'm not holding my breath.
