Thanks, theKing. I might call to double check tomorrow though.

You know there is a single player campaign, right?

Personally, I don't get a long enough lunch break to run over to BB during the day. My schedule after work is equally busy Tuesday thru Friday with kids' sports/activities, so midnight Monday is actually the easiest option to get it.

Don't you still have to connect online?

Doesn't matter. Apparently you can't even make it past the title screen without connecting to Bungie's servers.

Damn, I just found out the PS3 and PS4 versions share the same trophy list. I guess it makes sense considering your share your saves and progress and everything, but it would have been a neat bonus to have a shot at two platinums.

Oh well.

Really? Citation, please?
So Sony's whole thing with no DRM, you don't have to be connected to play a game on disc is bullshit, since any publisher can override that rule?

There were posts earlier about how people have the disc early but can't do anything, and were streaming it.

And I don't think it's bullshit, there are games that are designed to be online only. I think it would be dumber the other way, where developers are forced to make an offline game.

Re: Bungie - Destiny

It has a single player component, there's no reason that should require a persistent online connection. So, kinda bullshit.

Correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I know there's "single player" in that you can play the game solo if you want without grouping up with others, but it's basically designed like an MMO (even if they resist calling it that). I imagine a lot of the in game mechanics are built to be online with loot drops would be randomized from Bungie's servers opposed to locally off disc. Still don't see how it's bullshit.

It's bullshit because it's not necessary for the single-player game. They might SAY it is, but it's just bullshit lies, since every disc-based game's single player component is playable off-line.

They always said it was "up to publishers" but that they wouldn't have an online requirement in place at the system/platform level.

Some games are online only games, but that's different from being an online only console.

Oh, so they're lying because you just assume it should be possible to be offline. Gotcha.

Re: Bungie - Destiny

The game I played in the A/B was basically Borderlands. Remove the other online players and it's a single player game.

I remember Sim City having an online-only requirement being the WORST THING IN THE HISTORY OF GAMING. Apparently things have changed in the year.

Wasn't Sim City was huge disaster because of the online-only requirement?

I don't see how they've changed, as to me this is more along the lines of complaining that an MMO doesn't have an offline mode.

Diablo III on PC started this trend a couple of years ago and it did just fine. This is nothing new.

And it's not a problem... until servers go down and you own an expensive coaster despite there being a single player portion of the game you could be playing in the meantime.

But that's sort of the point. There is no truly single player portion of the game. You can play it alone, but the entire game is based around online interactions.

The idea being that if you're playing solo, you can come across other people, engage in those random events with the other people around to give the universe a living, breathing feel to it.

This isn't like Sim City where the online requirement was being done to combat piracy and added nothing to the gameplay.

Sure, they could have done it the Borderlands way, but at the same time you don't run into other people in Borderlands either. You have to join up with them beforehand.

I will say this, they should make it clear on the box and on the PS Store and XBOX Marketplace that you are required to be online to play. I don't it's right to hide that fact.

I disagree slightly with your comment about Sim City, but otherwise to everything else. Plus, the online requirement has been known since the game was announced and when I created the thread (I mention it in the very first post!), so I don't really get the complaint now.

As far as making it clear on the box, apparently it is (for PS4 and XBO anyway).

Re: Bungie - Destiny

I found out today that this game cannot be played unless my Xbox is connected to a some kind of monitor as well as a power source. Looks like this one is going right back to the store.

Not correct. You can play couch co-op horde mode.
