New Saints Row video game banned from classification in Australia
THE newest instalment of top-selling video game Saints Row has been banned in Australia, becoming the first title to be refused classification after the introduction of an R18+ rating for games in January this year.
Saints Row IV will be banned from sale in Australia under the ruling, announced by Classification Board acting director Donald McDonald late on Tuesday.
Mr McDonald said the Board had refused an adults-only rating to the game due to "interactive, visual depictions of implied sexual violence not justified by context" and "elements of illicit or proscribed drug use related to incentives or rewards".
Mr McDonald said Saints Row IV was the first game banned from sale since the new video game classifications came into action six months ago, with other titles including Ninja Gaiden: Razor's Edge and Mortal Kombat receiving an R18+ rating.
"Apart from today's decision, since the beginning of the year, the board has classified 17 games R18+ under the new guidelines," he said.
Saints Row IV publisher Deep Silver has confirmed that it will edit the game just for Australia and resubmit it to the Classification Board.
"Volition, the developer, are reworking some of the code to create a version of the game for this territory by removing the content which could cause offence without reducing the outlandish gameplay that Saints Row fans know and love,” the company said..
The last game in the series, Saints Row: The Third, received an MA15+ rating in Australia prior to the introduction of the R18+ rating, and no other title in the series has been banned.
Prior to the adults-only rating introduction, however, many big-name games were refused classification in Australia, including Fallout 3, Postal, Left 4 Dead 2, and four Grand Theft Auto titles, which feature similar open-world, crime-based gameplay to Saints Row.

Re: Saints Row 4
I just finished SR3 (or at least the main story) having gotten it for free on PS Plus, and I absolutely loved the game. It's like they took Grand Theft Auto and asked a bunch of people "what's annoying about this game" and then went and then did exactly the opposite:
- The tone isn't overly serious and is a better match for the kind of crazy stuff you want to do in this type of game
- Every story mission is more batshit crazy than the last
- Variety. Instead of yet another fetch quest, you get wrestling, zombies, virtual reality, space, freefalling...and none of them overstay thier welcome
- The characters are more fun than anything in GTA since Vice City
- Collecting vehicles and modifying them is much more user friendly (and fun) than GTA
- Driving is much less clunky and more fun than GTA, but with fewer cars
- Flying is much easier than GTA and with a better variety of choppers/planes
- Shooting is much much much better than GTA and is probably on par with most third person shooters
- Weapons are more interesting and generally more amusing
- The game doesn't partition off the world, vehicles or weapons much at all
- Main story isn't so artifically long that you tire of it
- The side missions that do stretch out the game are fully optional and aren't dating/bowling sims
- By the end of the game, you are practically invincible and practically feel like a superhero (fitting given where they are going with 4)
- By the end, BASE jumping from helicopters is the best (and most awesome) way to get around, suplexing dudes is just as efficient as shooting them, and every random car has nitrous.

The only places where GTA beats this game are in the AI of the population (Steelport citizens are nuts) and graphics. Otherwise, this game is in every way more fun and more interesting.
I'm very intrigued to see where they go with SR4, and am a little bit disappointed the hear that SR2 is closer to GTA, as this game prompted me to trade in GTA IV. I am fully bored with that franchise and haven't really enjoyed one since III and Vice City.

I didn't realize until just now that this was from the makers of Red Faction: Guerrilla. Yeah, that makes perfect sense. Other than a sort of bland setting, that game was simply amazing. It also had seriously underrated multiplayer.
I don't see me going back to SR2, but I'll definitely check out SR4 at some point...can probably wait for free on PS Plus or used somewhere down the road though.

Looks like Saints Row 3 with a bit of Prototype mixed in, which is great because I loved the idea behind Prototype but thought the world was boring as hell and it took away from the fun of rampaging around with crazy powers. Don't think I'll have the same problem here.

Re: Saints Row 4
I didn't like Prototype at all. It had its moments but little frustrations with control and navigation overrode any fun I was having, especially when it came out at the same time as the far superior Infamous. But I absolutely loved its predecessor "Hulk Ultimate Destruction" on Gamecube (and I think PS2). I'm not sure if it was just because it was Hulk or because he fit that kind of game so well, but that game was truly a hidden gem of that generation.
I have mixed feelings about the super-powers angle. I really like the vehicles and collecting them (spent a couple of hours last night just collecting various helicopters), and I feel like I already have "that game" in Infamous, Prototype, Hulk, a dozen Spider-men, etc.
That said, you had me at Dubstep gun.

Saints Row 4′s San Diego Comic-Con panel revealed the first DLC details for Volition and Deep Silvers upcoming game. A previous DLC expansion pack that was originally planned for Saints Row 3 titled “Enter the Dominatrix” will now be released up to 45 days from the date of the Saints Row 4 launch at retail this August.
Volition studio head Steve Jaros confirmed that the new DLC will take the focus of a mockumentary starring the games cast. It will feature behind-the-scenes footage from the characters as they discuss why the expansion concept was cut from Saints Row 3 and merged into the world of Saints Row 4.
It was explained that the reason for the change of plan around the DLC was that the concept of players fighting aliens in a virtual world was expanded for Saints Row 4 and therefor the DLC fits in the latest game due to hit retail from August 20th in North America, and August 23rd across Europe.

Don't let that one get away from you. I'm not even into sandbox games and SRIII is one of my favorites in recent years for how over the top insane it is.

i played a little of the first 2 games. however, with most all sandbox games, I get bored or mad after about 15 hours. There is usually one mission in these types of games that will frustrate me to no end and I quit.

SR3 is not like other sandbox games. It's structured much better.

NSFW cause max shows off the giant purple dildo bat
I was on the fence about whether to get gta V or SR 4 but the video sold me!
One important point from the vid is confirmed mod support for the pc version

Re: Saints Row 4
I watched IGN play this for an hour and I'm less interested than I was before. I'm really considering cancelling my pre-order. The weapons are cool but the combat with the aliens didn't look to fun and the lack of graphics and the same city from SR3 really shows.
