It's relevant! I mean free PS3 games when we're using the PS4 will have a huge impact.

PS Plus is a relevant topic as it will continue to add value on PS4 and in my case will probably help justify a Vita to use on my PS4.
Besides, what else can we talk about? It's not like Mark Cerny is getting fired two weeks after E3 and going to run Farmville.
Does it bother you that there are positive things to talk about over here?

Well I know this is not along the soap opera lines of "As The Xbox One Turns" and might actually be boring but here it is...
http://www.officialplaystationmagazi...d-to-graphics/
Cerny on PS4′s hardware: “The GPU’s doing many tasks not directly related to graphics”
Mark Cerny explains PS4′s GPU
Cerny’s maintained from the PS4′s reveal that Sony’s next-gen hardware is developer-centric, and these latest details are testament to that.
Addressing the crowd at Gamelab 2013 in Barcelona, the brains behind PS4 and former Crash Bandicoot & Spyro developer Cerny explained that the PlayStation 4′s graphics architecture is capable of running tasks usually associated with the CPU.
“We have worked hard to ensure that the console has a rich feature set, which will allow it to grow over the years and support the overall evolution of gaming. And our work there on that rich feature was to focus on making sure that for those teams that were interested in investing time, the GPU could be used for far more conventional graphics.
Principally, we enhanced the GPU to make the use of asynchronous fine grained compute practical on the platform. So the asynchronous refers to the GPU doing many tasks which is not directly related to graphics.”
What does all that theory lead to in games? A more believable world, from audio to physical properties, Cerny continues:
“Physics simulation, collision detection, ray casting for audio, decompression and the like. And these operations are fine grained meaning that there will be many small world simulation tasks running on the GPU simultaneously alongside rendering of the game scenes. So the concept is that as game developers learn to use these techniques later on in the console life cycle, we will see richer and even more interactive worlds.”
PS4′s “developer-centric approach to design”
According to Cerny the early days of PS4′s life, “wasn’t based on any specific beliefs at that time”, the only issue he wanted to address? “Clearly we had had some issues with PlayStation 3,” referring to the fact that while the PS3′s Cell chip was powerful, it wasn’t particularly easy to work with. Because of that Cerny decided quickly that, “a very developer-centric approach to the design of the PlayStation 4 would just make things go more smoothly overall.”
During his tour of developers to gather feedback and ideas for the new console one thing became clear. “The largest piece of feedback we got was that they wanted unified memory.” It’s the reason behind the PS4′s 8 8GB of GDDR5 RAM. Not only is that a lot it can be accessed equally between the CPU and GPU, unlike the PS3′s partitioned 512MB. That effectively functions as 2 x 256MB, split between processing and graphics; a restrictive arrangement that caused problems for some (most famously causing Skyrim’s memory issues and lag).
The eight core CPU was another developer-lead choice. ”We quickly could tell that we should put either four or eight cores on the hardware,” explains Cerny. “The consensus was that any more than eight, and special techniques would be needed to use them, to get efficiency.”

Sony made a great choice to have Cerny develop and oversee the ps4, he's a genius and knows what developers want in a console

I'm not sure whether he's a genius, but at a minimum, he seems to be a practical and technically competent guy who is capable of listening...as opposed to a corporate schmuck who is surrounded by yes-men and is convinced that his "vision" will win out in the end. I'm not even sure I want a "genius" designing a console. That's how you end up with the PS3.

I'm not sure I give Cerny major props on that last comment (offloading tasks to the GPU), this is extremely common these days with PhysX and OpenCL on the ATI/AMD side of things and OpenCL and CUDA on the Nvidia side.
He's just kind of presenting it as something new for consoles, which it is. The biggest benefit is still the 8gb GDDR5 which should work wonders with the ATI card being used.
Also I'm not sure "Genius" is what I would call the PS2 and PS3. They called the PS2 the emotion engine because that fucker made you want to cry. Basically I had always heard externally it was because you could have a stronger platform using proprietary code, internally it was always rumored that the more difficult you make a system to program for, the less likely they will be to port their games to competing platforms. That works great if you're the PS2 and have 150m units sold. Not so much if you're neck and neck with the competitor and games are being developed on a PC and ported over.

Edit...thinking about it now, PS2 had the worst looking games of that generation, but it dominated. Go figure.
What I like about Cerny is that he's been on the wrong end of multiple bad architectures, so I'm betting that he "gets it". I don't know whether he's a "genius" or not, but I'm betting that he's approaching the architecture from a very grounded and practical place. From a hardware standpoint, I'm extremely confident that they will get the PS4 right.
What I'm concerned about is Sony's network infrastructure, as they've never given any indication that they know what they are doing in that realm.

At this point, with the specs that it is, it will be difficult for them to screw up the PS4 (though not impossible). I'm hoping with them going Live-style with PSN Plus they will fix their infrastructure.
I'm optimistic overall though, not so much because I believe what they say, but because the Vita is a truly impressive little device and underutilized as it may be, they knocked it out of the park on the technical and usability side.

Between PS Plus and remote PS4 play, I like the long term prospects for the Vita. I'm very confident that I will own one.
I was actually looking at one on Craigslist yesterday in "new condition with box" for $150...was thinking about it, but it would literally sit until at least the PS4 launch and probably until Xmas.

Terrible analogy in that every other memory on you list is Memory Stick, which they intended to become the industry standard, and Memory Stick is manufactured by multiple other companies.
In the case of the Vita, that memory card is ONLY meant for the Vita and to date is ONLY manufactured by Sony.
I'll take your point, but there is a difference here. This feels to me just like Microsoft with the 360 hard drive.

It has nothing to do with the XBLA, but you posted it there.
I love positive things for both systems.

So... can you effectively use the Vita without a memory card?
If not, then why doesn't it come with one at all?
Edit - it seems like the 3G version is the way to go, even if you have no use for 3G?
Comes with PS Plus, 4G memory card (almost useless, but better than nothing) and a game...

My debacle with the PSN over the past few days is slowly wanting to make me cancel my PS4 pre-order and just keep my PS3 for the foreseeable future until I can get some guarantee that Sony will fix the PSN.
I've tried both over wired and wireless. I've configured my AirPort Extreme to a goddamn T to make sure ALL of Sony's ports for PSN were open. And yet I can't get anything over 9 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up. Even with a new HD and fresh install in the console, downloads are still extremely slow. For example: it took less than ten minutes to download and install the BO2 DLC pack that came out today on the 360. In the same amount of time, I barely managed to download a 300MB game off PS+.
I can download a 15GB game off Steam in under 45 minutes. It took me nearly three hours to download XCOM at 8GB.
My concern is how many people will be clogging up the PSN when the PS4 launches? Especially with how many people are making the switch from Microsoft to Sony. I just feel the network will take a shit on launch day, especially if Sony requires a day one patch a la Microsoft or Nintendo.
However, I do like how the PS3 with PS+ can do automatic updates to all your games in the middle of the night.

Playstation Store is a joke. It might just be that it's Tuesday and the store is updating, but it took me probably 30 seconds just to load the storefront app from the XMB. That is simply unacceptable.

PS Plus is required on PS4, and a lot of people didn't have it, including myself. You are free to think it's not worth discussing Plus as a value proposition, and I am free to not give a shit whether you think it's worth discussing.
Decker and somebody else posted it there, and I may or may not have commented, but thanks for researching...not sure where we'd be without you.
It was a direct response to the 15-20 posts before it in that thread, and if you'd taken 2 minutes to read before jumping to play forum police, you'd have already known that.
As do I...and they both pros/cons that are worth discussing/comparing...ideally without getting butthurt.

30 seconds doesn't sound like a long time, but when you're sitting there thinking "What the fuck is this thing loading?", it's a long time.
Ideally, when you're in the XMB and not in a game, the storefront would be loaded up in the background automatically. I'm not sure if the Cell architecture is the problem, but it's a problem.

Feel better now? Or do you have to keep joining others in posting everything negative you can about MS and the One instead of just being happy with your decision?

I post negative stuff about both systems. I've dealt with 7 years of bullshit on PS3 for the sake of free online play, blu-ray and first party exclusives, but I'm not married to those fuckers. My eyes are wide open.
I don't see how it's my fault that MS has simply had more negative stuff to talk about...to date.
