Movies are the ones 24 fps.

For release date, being able to play (wow!) with your PS4 right away will be a big advantage. Although they have said that the X1 will take up to 20 minutes to patch (ha!), I think that means you have to wait that time, no option to play a game. That's the way I understand it, same way as the WiiU.

Most, if not all, scripted (non-reality) television is shot at 24 fps using either 16mm, 35mm, or digitally. Reality or live television is shot usually at the more video standard 30 fps.

Hard to tell how tongue in cheek this is.

I don't expect the day one patch to be a big deal on either system.

It's at the point where I'm straight up not letting my friends get Xbox Ones. CBOAT at neogaf is saying the execs decided what went under the hood over the engineers at MS and things are going to be bad at launch, conventional thinking being faulty OS or games not starting.
The fear is that competition is a good thing and its bad for the industry, but the counter argument is that the systems that really moved gaming forward were ones that dominated their generation - NES, Genesis, PS1, Gameboy.

Nah. The consoles who won their generation generally offered up something new and unique (i.e. competition). PS1 had discs which allowed for bigger games, FMV and the like. PS2 had DVD playback which was enticing over a dedicated gaming device but more importantly, games. Lots and lots of fucking games*. Wii nailed the motion tech demo as a game and simple controls for grandma.

Not sure what that means for PS4/X1 cause I sure as hell doubt Kinect is the force MS thinks and/or wants it to be. Second screen is a novelty as well. Maybe this gen just boils down to games. Novel concept.

*Despite the lopsided PS2 win, I'd argue the Xbox did more for gaming than anything on PS2. Made HD & broadband standard, hard drives, Live, DLC, digital marketplace, etc. People weren't ready for HD & broadband when the 360 hit let alone 4 years earlier. They made that push and everyone else followed suit.

Boils down to the games? Oh, so it's like the fourth-generation all over again? Better graphics and more peripherals that most people don't want.

I feel the Dreamcast had some of the right ideas in place, but failed on the execution. Xbox got the execution right (internet) that the Dreamcast failed to get.

Anyone here following Adam Sessler? He's having some kind of meltdown

https://twitter.com/AdamSessler

Some are speculating it's the restrictions for video recording of the ps4 preventing him from making videos. He's being very vague about the whole thing.

With Xbox the 1st thing I think of in terms of the games is voice acting. KOTOR changed was the first game I can remember where it impacted the game. But if you say Wii and PS2 won the last gens basically for gimmicks - PS2 did more than just game by playing DVDs and motion controls for Wii, well that's why every generation now it's like these are the same games they just look better. It was about expanding the base, not about the gamers. Now the PS4 looks to me like its back to the roots - not aping iPad or Wii. There was no chance of me getting a Day One Xbox One since E3 and I'm not thrilled with every wrong turn MS has taken since, because competition is normally good, but I see positives for the WiiU and XB1 for being so undesirable. I hate having to decide if I'm getting Arkham on PS3 or 360 every 2 years. Hate the consoles taking up my whole tower. I'm looking forward to this launch more than I thought I would.

re: PS4 Pre-Release Thread: No MP3 for You! (11/15/2013)

Well we all hear about the file size of Killzone is large at....

Killzone: Shadow Fall final file size is 39.7GB

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/kil.../1100-6415765/

.and now this from COD: Ghost...

Call of Duty: Ghosts PS4 Allegedly Requires 49 GB for Install

http://www.gametrailers.com/side-mis...gb-for-install

....which goes back to that light minor concern which seems to have got lost in all the XP vs PS4 debate...one has a removeable HD and one doesn't. I remember when this was brought up it was no big deal as the main concern at the time was the dreaded "HD Failure" and running out of disc space....naaaah...5000gb is plenty.

Those who have been around PC Gaming for a long time can vouch the steady climb in file size of game over he last 10+ years just like hardware advancement. So i had to go back and check some of those highly touted games from way back and compare their file size to the latest off Steam.....

System Shock 2 - 1999 - 2GB
Call of Duty: Ghost - 2013 - 40-50GB (Steam shows 40GB...other sites 50GB)

...which again brought up the original issue...having a removable HD vs one you cannot take out...or at least being told as much. Even when you look at the history of the 360 and PS3....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360 and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3

....you see the steady incline of adding larger HD's. When they first came out with their 20, 60 and 120Gb hard drives everyone back then said no worry....funny but almost the same thing we're hearing now. I honesty don't fully understand the inner workings of "The Cloud" but I'm one of those who likes to hold or have content near me and not off some far away place. I can understand off site backups but not using data or files streaming live.

One minor correction (maybe major depending on your point of view):

PS4 doesn't "install" disk based games. It puts them in cache. Some will say that's a distinction without a difference, but the assumption would be that the cache clears when you remove the disk, or maybe it caches your last couple games. So some portion of your HDD will presumably be set aside for cache (the bad news), but you won't always have to clean the fridge either (the good news).

Source is Shu on twitter:

David Magalhães @DiamondDM13
@yosp Sorry to ask this here, but I'm confused. Does the PS4 have mandatory game installs to the HDD? Or is that optional?

Shuhei Yoshida @yosp
@DiamondDM13 it's automatic, not install but caching data

I did see that.

It looks like he's being a diva because the major gaming sites are getting early review units and youtube personalities aren't.

I can't imagine he'd really be that worked up over HDCP. For whatever window it takes Sony to firmware it out of gameplay, they can strip it with a $20 HDMI splitter.

It would have been nice to see him get that worked up over DRM or any number of other things that affect actual consumers.

A few days back he said he would be doing some next-gen reviews soon so I think he has early review units. I thought Rev 3 games is owned or associated with Destructoid?

In other words, I'm not getting a debug unit like the big outlets, and I'm making a fuss on twitter. Fucking wah.

The sad thing is that it will probably work.

I was also following at the time...multiple other "colleagues" chimed in on GAF (Albert Pennelo, Marcus Beers, Kevin Dent and others). My personal favorite was from Jeremy Conrad, on twitter:

@ManaByte: When I was at IGN, we stood in line 18 hours to buy our PS2s for work. Any reviewer crying about not getting a free PS4 is a little bitch.

Marcus Beer sez:

Let me clarify 1 thing, it's not about "video capture issues", it's about evaluating things in staged environments.
and
If the media can't do it's job due to daft restrictions, we can't do our job and inform the consumer properly. That's the crux of things.
and
Its not just about the games, its reviewing the actual system 2 days before the damn thing ships.
(If Sessler's concern has to do with the latter, presumably it's because he's afraid it's indicative of a larger, industry-wide shift to prevent early coverage? I don't know.)

IGN's Marty Sliva:
Can't go into too much detail, but to shed a bit of light on this, Adam's frustration will in no way impact you guys whatsoever. It just makes our jobs a hell of a lot harder. Sorry for being vague, but just know that there's no need to read too much into this.

Also, I promise you we at IGN don't have some single magic piece of hardware that no other outlet has. We're all in the same boat.
While it's possible that Sessler is going nuts about not getting a debug unit, there are some pretty massive logical leaps that have to be made to bound from those tweets to that conclusion. I'd think it'd have to be something bigger, like Sony not allowing monetization of videos with gameplay footage or a fundamental inability to capture/control video footage.

There's that invitation for a PS4 review event:

Does that mean gaming journalists are basically only allowed to provide a timely review of the PS4 based on what they experience as a part of that event?

PS4 System Software Update 1.50 Details
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/...-1-50-details/

Spoiler:
We wanted to shed some light on system software update version 1.50 for PS4, which will launch simultaneously with the system’s official North American launch on November 15th, 2013. By updating to system software version 1.50, you’ll be able to experience a variety of new features in addition to the basic functions of PS4.

The system software update 1.50 is approximately 300 MB, and will include the following features:

Remote Play
Users will be able to access PS4 titles displayed on their living room TVs and play them on a PS Vita system over Wi-Fi networks by using PS4 Link (Depending on network environment or titles, remote play performance may vary outside of the home). We anticipate that most PS4 titles will be playable on the PS Vita system through Remote Play. The latest PS Vita system software version, to be released soon, will be required to use PS4 Link.

Second Screen
Users can use the PS4 Link application for the PS Vita system, and PlayStation App for iPhone, iPad, and Android-based smartphones and tablets, to use these devices as second screens in supported titles. PlayStation App has the ability to enable users to interact with games with their mobiles devices. For example on The Playroom, a title pre-installed in all PS4 systems that requires PlayStation Camera, users can draw pictures on their mobile device screens and flick them towards the TV. The images then appear as a 3D object within the game.

Record, take screenshots, and upload gameplay effortlessly
The PS4 system provides dedicated, “always on” video encoding systems that enables seamless uploading of gameplay. Users can share their epic triumphs by simply hitting the Share button on DualShock 4, take screenshots or scan through the last 15 minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game—the video uploads as the user plays. At the PS4 system’s launch in North America, users will be able to share their images and videos with friends on Facebook and screenshots with followers on Twitter, though users will need to sign up for individual accounts to use Facebook and Twitter.

Broadcast and spectate gameplay
The PS4 system also enhances social spectating by enabling users to broadcast their gameplay in real-time to game fans around the globe, using Ustream and Twitch live internet streaming services (users will need to sign up for individual accounts to use Ustream and Twitch). There are two ways for users to view live broadcasts. First, the Live from PlayStation application on PS4 aggregates streams from all PlayStation users. Second, users can spectate friends’ PS4 gameplay from PCs, and applications such as Ustream, Twitch, and browsers, which are installed on their mobile devices. These applications can be easily started up via PlayStation App, and users can also use these applications to post comments to gameplay broadcasts. Furthermore, users with PlayStation Camera can stream camera images and microphone sounds along with their live gameplay broadcast.

Play as you download
This feature enables users to play supported digital titles as they are being downloaded. The time it takes to begin playing will vary depending on game data size and network environments, and not all titles will support this feature When a game is purchased, users can start playing after PS4 downloads a portion of the data, while the rest of the game is downloaded in the background during actual gameplay. Games may be downloaded in stand-by mode.

Multi log-in
A maximum of four users can log-in to a single PS4 system simultaneously. These players can use their own save data to play games, and also earn trophies on their own Sony Entertainment Network accounts even when playing a multiplayer game together on a single PS4 system.

Party (Voice chat)
By using the Mono Headset bundled with the PS4 system, users will be able to chat with up to eight friends enjoying different applications or games. Furthermore, users can use Party to chat between PS4 and PS Vita systems.

Face recognition and voice commands
Users with PlayStation Camera will be able to register their facial image onto their PS4 system, and login to their system using facial recognition instead of DualShock 4. Furthermore, users can use either the microphone of the Mono Head set connected to DualShock 4, or PlayStation Camera to navigate through the PS4 home screen (PlayStation Dynamic Menu) with voice commands to start up games and shutdown the system, among other features; please refer to PS4’s online manual for recognizable voice commands.

Background music player
Users can enjoy gameplay while listening to music in the background with Music Unlimited, a cloud-based digital music service. Users can also voice chat with friends while listening to music. Learn more about Music Unlimited here.

Online Multiplayer
PlayStation Plus members will be able to play PS4 titles online with other players via the network. PS Plus makes it easy for members to join available online multiplayer matches in a variety of ways, including the ability to easily join a game from a live stream broadcast or Party voice chats.

Blu-ray Disc and DVD player
Users can enjoy not only gaming on their PS4 system, but also Blu-ray and DVD video contents. When using for the first time, users must connect to the internet to activate this feature.

Some features will not be available at launch, such as “suspend/resume mode” which is a feature that keeps the PS4 system in a low power state and promptly takes users back to their game. We will provide additional information about system software update version 1.50 and features available at the PS4 system’s North America launch, and features that will be available after launch, in the near future.
