re: PS4: Games you don't want, but it's $100 less! (11/15)

Saw this interview video with Jared Gerritzen of Studio Games, the one who made Blacklight Retribution. While they talk about the game itself a good insight on how and why they chose Sony and the PS4. It's about 5:30 long but makes you think Sony is really doing a good job with the Indie Devs.

I like that guy. I don't know if you checked out the livestream I posted of him with Machinima, but Blacklight looks like fun.

I'm sure I'll give it a proper chance and maybe even buy a gun or two as long as I don't get turned off buy the monitization model.

No... not at all... there was potentially bad news posted against the One, so Boo on Xbox - and good news on the PS4, so Yay Sony!

I wouldn't say the Xbox news was particularly bad, even if you hate to see the features you're used to go away. They only did the external hard drive solution on 360 because they had a model without a hard drive, which isn't the case now. Also:

German?

I thought you couldn't use an external hard drive on the 360 (at least not easily), only USB thumb drives...

Going to the question about using external HD's...I still haven't seen or read anything confirming their or USB Flash use or limitations. The question was about games...nothing about playing movies or anything else?

Exactly. I expect it to be just like the PS3...loves every photo, video or music format, but no games.

PS3 did love every video format for a while, then got kinda crappy. Also never played .mkv unless that's changed recently? Luckily, my newest TV supports USB and plays absolutely everything, and its the best thing I own

Not even familiar with .mkv.

Every video file I've ever thumb driven into my PS3 has played with zero issues. It doesn't do .aac, but I assume that's an Apple licensing thing, and I still use MP3 for everything anyway.

Here is a list of video formats supported on PS3. PS4 will likely be the same.

.mkv is the main file type for HD online.

I know it is one of (if not the one) preferred formats for compressed HD videos/movies.

What kind of TV do you have? I'm in the market for a new one and that seems like a nice feature to have.

Guess I'm not downloading a lot of movies. Everything I have is either MP4 or Divx.

My PS3 streams .mkv files off my PC just fine.

It's a 3D Samsung plasma. Don't really use the 3D much but plasma still looks better than LED to me, and the USB feature is amazing.

If I remember correctly the Xbox One will support install games to external hard drives (whenever they add external hard drive support), and if they don't change their mind again

So if you like to have 20+ games installed at once that may be a plus.

There's an article somewhere, where one guy installed an SSD on a PS3, his loading times improved, and he had a little bit more performance, insert tech geek speak here. So that's something that could be done in an external hard drive more easily, and of course the PS4 will be able to do it internally again.

I bought a plasma HDTV in 2006. I spent over $3K on it. In two years I had black bars burned in on the sides of the screen from my wife watching SD broadcasts. I could always see it on the 360 star-up screen. I ended up giving it away to a friend. Maybe they've gotten better, but I'll never, ever buy a Plasma TV again.

PS4 had better have a replaceable hard drive. I can think of no good reason to have it locked down.
