Re: Ultimate Kickstarter Video Games Thread

Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption squeaked by and reached its goal, so it's funded. Shadowgate still has about $20K to go with 4 days left.

30 games for $15
This Kickstarter has an exclusive new game by Keita Takahashi (creator of Katamari Damacy). You can pay $5 for that game, or pay $10 more and get 29 other games, many by established indie developers:

Thorvalla
An RPG by game designer Guido Henkel (Planescape: Torment, Realms of Arkania, Fallout 2, Neverwinter Nights).
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...y-guido-henkel

Limit Theory
An Infinite, Procedural Space Game. The developer is a bit of a novices (still in college!), but has managed to develop the game enough so far to produce some impressive screenshots.

Re: Ultimate Kickstarter Video Games Thread

Thorvalla sounds great, but once again I think it's a game that set their goal ($1,000,000) too high for what it is.

Peter Molyneux and co. has a Kickstarter project up, something called Project GODUS. Looks like it's intended to be a reinvention of Populous.

Re: Ultimate Kickstarter Video Games Thread

The "30 games for $15" Kickstarter for LA Game Space has added 5 classic games to their $15+ tiers:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...s/posts/354902

The games are:
  • Noitu Love 2: Devolution
  • Aquaria
  • Off-Road Velociraptor Safari
  • The Basement Collection (7+ game collection)
  • Super Crate Box (Xmas Edition)

You still also get the exclusive new game by Keita Takahashi and 30+ new games from other indie developers. That's over 36 games for just $15.

Have you used Kickstarter before? When you make the pledge, you give them authorization via Amazon Payments to charge your credit card for the amount of your pledge. That charge goes through automatically at the end of the Kickstarter.

That said, you can decrease your pledge at any time before the final 24 hours of a Kickstarter project (and possibly within the final 24 hours as long as it doesn't affect whether the project will be funded or not).

What's the joke? Overpromising and then underdelivering? Which game project of his is it in reference to?

Seriously? Fable, Black & White, Project Milo. He's notorious for promising a zillion cool features and delivering 2 or 3 moderately interesting ones.

Shadowgate got funded at met one stretch goal. With Paypal funding still going they may reach another. Paypal link below:

Pathfinder Online is back, this time funding the actual game. The Tech Demo Kickstarter was apparently successful in getting enough investors to fund the game, but they're using Kickstarter to speed up/expand the development:

Dizzy Returns is a brand new Dizzy game by the original creators, The Oliver Twins. This was apparently a popular UK game series back in the 80s and 90s (I hadn't heard of it before this kickstarter).

Legend of Dungeon is a 4 Player Co-Op Roguelike-like Beat'em'up with pixel art. They have a playable demo available.

Alpha Colony ended only $28 short of their goal. That has to be the closest failure margin ever:

Too bad about Alpha Colony...that's one I would have funded for sure, but I missed Jay Z's post a couple days ago.

Article on Alpha Colony, where the developer is basically relieved the Kickstarter failed instead of barely succeed, as $50K would've left the game underfunded (they were apparently hoping for stretch goals):

Kickstarter news post that basically says the same thing:

OUYA is shipping out developer kits, including the dev model of the OUYA, starting December 28:

LA Game Space has reached it's goal, coming back from a dismal beginning. Still 3 days left to pledge and get 36 games for $15:

Re: Ultimate Kickstarter Video Games Thread

With the help of a last minute appeal on the Playstation Blog, the SPORTSFRIENDS Kickstarter made its $150,000 goal by the skin of its teeth. It really didn't look appealing to me at all (and I'm one of very few who actually bought a few Move games in the past). Still congrats for eking out funding.

The developer has responded, saying that the development is continuing, albeit at a slower pace than anticipated, and apologizing for the lack of communication.

Article from Escapist:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news...es-Bad-UPDATED

This interview from last month shows part of the problem may have been caused by a shift in focus to something more ambitious than proposed in the Kickstarter:
http://videogamewriters.com/sunday-s...mer-labs-57127
The beta will launch… when it’s ready! [Laughs] What will determine how quickly it gets ready is how quickly we can get the necessary funding and programmers to do it. We can deliver a bunch of levels that deliver on what we promised originally, but what we have in mind is ten times more ambitious. We’ve been talking to quite a few interested investors, philanthropists and foundations, and it looks like they’re going to be willing to help us finish the job.
The Kicsktarter originally promised immediate access to a beta version of the game post funding.

Some of the anxiety appears to be because Alex Peake's last company, Tatical Corsets, appears to have imploded leaving many orders unfilled:
http://blog.sinthetik.com/please-re-...ost-the-signal

That said, the only evidence for Code Hero running out of money has been a disgruntled backer claiming such.

In other news, Thorvalla was cancelled a week and a half ago. It wasn't raising money at the rate they felt was needed to reach their goal:

Re: Ultimate Kickstarter Video Games Thread

More Code Hero news.

Developer Alex Peake updated his update with some FAQs:
https://primerlabs.com/developmentcontinues
Did you run out of money? What did you spend the money on?

Yes, we ran out of funding because development took longer than expected and the Kickstarter money went to paying developers.

Fortunately, we still have a team dedicated to working on the project as volunteers until it is finished or we raise more money and can pay everyone again.

Why did the project take longer than expected?

To teach people real game programming as we set out to do, we had to expand the scope of the game. We focused on building Code Hero around teaching not just the original code ray shooting game mechanic but also a game building toolset so you can build, code, edit and upload worlds to the servers.
So the Kickstarter got funded, he got more ambitious, and burned through the money making a bigger game than he initially promised/planned for. Sounds irresponsible.

Luckily there were less than 242 pinatas in the first 7,060 backers.
