Yeah, they're funding really stalled. I don't know if it's something to do with the proposed game or Kickstarter fatigue or what. Maybe going head-to-head with Project Eternity hurt it a bit.

It's not a QfG sequel, but it's going to be an adventure/RPG similar to those games with a new story/setting.
Yeah, Activision isn't licensing out any of the Sierra titles at the moment. That's why Two Guys From Andromeda and Jane Jansen ended up making "spiritual sequels" as well. LSL lucked out due to Activision selling that title off years ago, likely due to the adult nature of the series.

Re: Ultimate Kickstarter Video Games Thread

I think Shaker might have stalled when they gave it the name "Shaker." WTH is that? They took a descriptive name in line with existing nostalgia kickstarters, and gave it the name of an 18th century offshoot of the Quakers. Brilliant!

Re: Ultimate Kickstarter Video Games Thread

I think the problem with "Shaker" is two fold:

1. They set their funding goal way too high
2. The initial description was extremely vague

The basic pitch was: give us $1 million and we'll make you an "old school RPG". That was it.

While it may prevent them from being funded, I'm not sure that means their funding goal was too high. If that is the amount they seriously think they need in order to make the game they want, I'd rather they set the goal for that amount and miss it than set a lower goal and have the game end up being underfunded.

A recent kickstarted game called Haunt just ran into problems completing the game when both programmers left the project for other jobs:
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012...starters-fail/

The idea that the $28K raised was supposed to fund a 4-person team for months suggests that they were relying on free, or at least very very cheap, labor. They ran into delays, and the programmers moved on to jobs that actually pay.

The Kickstarter for Hero-U, by the creators of Quest for Glory, just went live:

Wow. I was looking forward to the Hero-U kickstarter, as I enjoyed the original QfG games, but I'm rather disappointed. It looks terrible!

I got excited when there were pictures of the hand drawn backgrounds, but the in-game footage was pretty lousy.

QFG was my favorite Sierra series, but yeah, disappointed in the graphics.

Do you mean the part in the pitch video labeled "test dungeon"? I don't think that's supposed to represent finished graphics. I'm guessing the finished game is supposed to look closer to the concept art stills on the page.

Re: Ultimate Kickstarter Video Games Thread

If you read the description, though, it appears the hand drawn environments are for selected areas that you will have a first-person view in. The majority of the game is to be that top-down view. I'll check it out again if they clarify, I suppose, but for $400K, I'd expect something a little less "free Web Flash game" and more "commercial release."

In other news, Shaker called it quits for retooling. Guess they were concerned about the stall as well.

That was just concept art, though. Not the final graphics by any means.

Per KickTraq, they were trending towards nearly $500,000.

My recommendation for the team would be to sit down and figure out how much game they can build for $400,000, and then chart out how much it would cost to build the fully-featured game. If the "bare bones" $400,000 game seems like it would be playable and marketable, kick start that (this time with SPECIFICS about how the game will look and play given from day one), and use stretch goals to go beyond that.

From another thread:

It depends on the game.

Star Citizen has an estimated Nov 2014 delivery date.
Double Fine Adventure is due out in May 2013.
Wasteland 2 is aiming for an Oct 2013 delivery.
Project Eternity is looking at Apr 2014.
Planetary Annihilation is estimating Jul 2013.
Leisure Suit Larry Remake will be out early 2013.
Two Guys Spaceventure is working towards a Feb 2013 release.
Shadowrun Returns estimated Jan 2013, while Shadowrun Online predicts May 2013.

Most of the time, the developers set the estimated delivery date of the rewards as the estimate release date of the game (since so many of the rewards include the game). However, that can change; Leisure Suit Larry put an estimated delivery date of Oct 2012, but the extra funding and stretch goals meant that development would have to be extended into early 2013.

Re: Ultimate Kickstarter Video Games Thread

A few Shadowrun articles recently.

First, one on Shadowrun Online:
http://penny-arcade.com/report/edito...-a-faithful-ad

Next, one on Shadowrun Returns:
http://penny-arcade.com/report/edito...with-shadowrun

Finally, one on the Shadowrun tabletop game:
http://penny-arcade.com/report/edito...r-what-it-is-n

Interesting bit from the first article:
[Shadowrun Online] Executive Producer Jan Wagner has been working closely with the teams behind the Shadowrun tabletop RPG as well as Harebrained Schemes, the studio developing Shadowrun Returns - another video game adaptation - to craft a single, coherent universe across all three experiences.

Shadowrun Online takes place 20 years after Shadowrun Returns, and both studios are working with storyline developers on the Shadowrun tabletop system so that each game impacts the other. In other words, what happens in Shadowrun Returns will have an effect on Shadowrun Online, and Shadowrun Online will in turn move the meta-plot of the tabletop system forward.

I knew that was the direction this was going in (Don't all three products point to a shared website/forums as well?)

Re: Ultimate Kickstarter Video Games Thread

For those not impressed by the graphics in the video for Hero-U, the developers have confirmed that those were just "placeholder" graphics, and not representative of the finished game.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...n/posts/332460
Concept vs. Final Art

Most of you understand that games are developed using "placeholder art", but I am adding this since we've seen some complaints about the "test dungeon" art in the video. In previous games, we sometimes represented a character with a grey box or a red "X". The "game images" you see in this Kickstarter project are all placeholders. Some of them are really beautiful placeholders, but they may or may not be representative of final game art.

In particular, the 2D top-down image included in the video is a concept piece. That is the point of view you will have in the game, but the actual image is a placeholder. The actual Hero-U game will give you the freedom of movement and tactical actions that the top down view allows, but it will be carefully crafted to look Really Nice in the game. As it is, our prototype is way nicer than boxes and X's. :-)
Meanwhile, SHAKER has cancelled its Kickstarter, although it looks like they have plans to relaunch it at a later date:

Decent idea but I hate to break it to the guy, but $50 for his lithium 10 hour battery is hardly impressive. My regular MS rechargeable gets 10 hours. Not sure where he gets his 4-5 hour estimate, but that's just an outright lie to make his seem more impressive.

He also makes the claim that plugging in a controller to charge sucks, but is removing the flexibility of the 360 controller battery system to turn it into a PS3 controller that requires you to tether it to the system to charge.

I also have zero issues with ergonomics. The 360 pad is damn near perfect. Sure I could do without the battery weight but that's negligible.

This would be a great way to get more life out of my silver/d-pad broken controller for say $25, but for $50 I can just buy a new one.

This is the first British video game Kickstarter I've seen:

The Ship: Full Steam Ahead
A steampunk sequel to the 2006 multiplayer assassination game, The Ship.

Not a kickstarter, but I have two articles about the game Natural Selection 2 and how it was saved by crowdfunding:

Pier Solar is a fan-made SEGA Mega Drive & SEGA Genesis game released in 2010, touted as the largest 16-bit RPG ever.

They've started a Kickstarter to produce an HD remake for for Xbox 360, PC, Mac, Linux & SEGA Dreamcast.

Not sure if you all had seen this Boss Monster one. It's a card game not a video game, but it's based on the 16-bit video games of the NES era:

A few new Kickstarters:

SPORTSFRIENDS featuring Johann Sebastian Joust
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...ebastian-joust

A pack for 4 games for PC, Mac, Linux and PS3. Johann Sebastian Joust was specifically designed for the PS3 Move controller, although up to now it's been played with a PC. The other three games are BaraBariBall, Super Pole Riders, and Hokra. only $15 for all 4 games.

Retro Game Crunch - Six Games in Six Months
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...-in-six-months

A kind of extended game jam. Each month they spend 3 days developing a game based on a community-voted idea. They release the game, then spend the rest of the month polishing it based on community suggestions. $25 gets you all 6 games, plus their previous game, Super Clew Land.

Re: Ultimate Kickstarter Video Games Thread

Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption has about 1 day left and is about $50,000 short of its goal:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...-to-redemption

Even though I never played Quest for Glory, I'm really hoping this one is funded just to keep the streak of former Sierra game designers getting funded.

The Shadowgate remake is also not fully funded yet. Although it has a few more days to go (5 days), considering it ends over Thanksgiving weekend I figured it'd be good to mention it now.
