I kind of want to do this, but 100 bucks is a lot to throw down on something that may never really take off.

Some Kickstarter news:
CLANG was succesfully funded.
OUYA has its own thread on this site, but feel free to talk about it here as well:
http://forum.dvdtalk.com/video-game-...e-console.html
The makers of Defense Grid have started a Kicstarter to fund the creation of a sequel:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...defense-grid-2
For $15 you get the original game and an expansion if they hit their goal of $250,000. Then you'll get additional features as they hit stretch goals, including DG2 if they raise $1 million.
The first game is on sale for cheap on Steam right now:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/18500/
Here the developer explains why they went with a Kickstarter to fund the sequel:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...0&postcount=14
Video Game webcomic Penny Arcade has a Kickstarter to fund their site going ad free for a year. In addition to no ads, they'd have the free time to create additional comics for the fans, such as Lookouts and Automata:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...cade-sells-out
The Penny Arcade Kickstarter has created a small bit of controversy:

Re: Ultimate Kickstarter Video Games Thread
We've been asked this a few times, so I thought I'd share the answer we're putting up in the FAQ. I'm happy to try and answer any other questions you have as well
Don’t you have enough money already for DG2, from DG1 or Valve on CS:GO?
We put everything we had into Defense Grid; we wanted the game to be able to reach a lot of people, and looking back we probably sold the game at too low a price. It paid for it’s cost, but not enough for us to make DG2 on our own. It takes a lot of money to make games (especially ones with 3d art instead of 2d sprites). We've been pitching it for several years but it's not f2p social (where the money is now in small games), or AAA (where the money is in big games). We still think there's enough interest to be successful, but that's what we're finding out by doing a Kickstarter.
Since Defense Grid shipped, we’ve been working for other folks who look for people who make high quality games – most recently Valve for the Counter-Strike franchise – and that has been great work that helps our team gel even further and allows us to create great game experiences, but it also isn’t going to provide enough to fund a Defense Grid 2.

That PC Magazine article also took a swipe at Pebble which I know several of us (including myself) put money down on.

Duh! 80% of business proposals are just scams, I'm talking in general, not just Kickstarter. And of course some of those scams work... for the person that offered it, again, in general.

But when you think about it, it might be a bit of bad planning. Yes they are separate, but people will view them as together and think this is a bit too soon for asking for more money. Ideally, they should have waited until the middle of fall. Just my two cents.

I'm getting super-bummed watching the Defense Grid 2 kickstarter's trends: http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/hid...efense-grid-2/
It's starting to look like it's not even going to make its initial goal, let alone any of the stretch goals.

Actually, 250k gets you DG2 when it's eventually made. Not getting to 1M just means they can't fund it outright and it will have to wait while they work for the man on other projects.
That wasn't very clear and it's a fallacy that still permeates the blogs.

Are you sure? Here's what it says right on their page FAQs
I was trying to find confirmation of what you just posted and didn't actually see it there. But I only scanned briefly. Can you post your source?
edit: Found it. Not too promising, though.
Q: Exactly what do I get for a $15 pledge? Do I get DG2 if we cross $1m raised?
A: Yes, for a $15 pledge, you get any digital game content we are able to make with the money raised. If we raise $250k, then you'll get DG:Containment. If we raise $500k, you'll get DG:Containment and the remastered DG1 with multiplayer. If we raise $750k, you'll get DG:Containment, the remastered DG1 with multiplayer, the level editor, and Mac & Linux versions. If we raise $1m you'll get DG:Containment & DG2 for sure, and the community can vote on whether they want us to have us make a remastered DG1 with multiplayer, level editor and Mac & Linux, or just put those resources towards a larger DG2 which will also have multiplayer, level editor and Mac and Linux.

Q: What will happen with DG2 if you fund one of the lower tiers only?
We're in this to make DG2. But, we don't have the money to do so. If we did, we likely would be already 1/2 way done. So this is our way of turning to you to make DG2. But we recognize that any time anyone asks for a large amount of money it's a tough ask. So, we came up with a development plan to get to DG2, came up with things we could deliver along the way, and created the tiers.
But, as people donate and wonder if it can reach the full amount, they ask - what will happen, and the answer is we'll keep trying to make DG2, and we'll get a portion of the way because of you whether that's 1/4, 1/2, or 3/4 or more. And for anything we raise here, we will focus on delivering you the things we promised (that's a big deal to us - you're trusting us and we have to deliver for you to keep this partnership going), and then once we deliver everything we promised, we'll do what we can to come up with the rest. We'll sell the pieces that make sense to sell and use the proceeds, we'll work on other games for other people if we need to and save any profit, and we'll work to complete the full DG2. When we do - and that may be more than a year out if we don't raise everything needed in this kickstarter - you will still get a code for DG2 when it is released. We won't forget you or how you helped us get as far as we will get through this campagin.

Pledge $15 or more
1808 backers
First, you get a Steam code for a free copy of the original Defense Grid (PC) game immediately: as soon as we know you are a backer, even before funding closes. Then in December (we estimate), you'll get a digital copy of DG:Containment, and after that you'll get any new DG content funded from this Kickstarter when development is complete – you’ll also get DG2 – either funded directly from this Kickstarter or later when we are able to release it ourselves. We'll also create a new private forum for backers that you can join.

Article on the Oculus Rift:
http://penny-arcade.com/report/edito...d-change-the-w
The developers go out of their way to discourage regular consumers from backing the Kickstarter; the headset in the Kickstarter is specifically for game developers, and the eventual consumer version will have a host of improvements.
Defense Grid 2 now has new tiers that offer just the game and a discounted AMD video card. You can get an AMD Radeon HD 6870 for as little as $105, and an AMD Radeon HD 6770 for as little as $85:

I don't know if it's due to the addition of those tiers, but the DG2 fund has exploded over the last 3 days. $36,000 so far and that's after averaging 2.5-3k/day for the last two weeks.
Suffice it to say, I'm very happy it's on pace to hit the original goal, so at least something happens.

Yeah, this happened. Not surprised that there was a spike in sales. I'd go for it but it's only one step better than the two cards I have crossfiring now, so I decided to pass. Great deal, though
