re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)

glad I did not pick this up

wasn't on the GOTY train for the original release but heard nothing but good things about the MP (which I never played the first time) .... had thought about getting this just for the MP but didn't pull the trigger

with the issues and other MP games like PvZ: GW and Destiny getting my attention this would have just fallen by the wasteside

re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)

MP is overrated. It is a blast at first, but I quickly tired of it. Every match falls into the same pattern. It just feels small compared to other MP games. Even COD can at least feel different from one match to another. You have 2 game modes that both end up being TDM and one game mode that is not worth playing because everyone tries to stretch out the games to 30 minutes to pad their supplies (which are used to level up). That third mode is so bad that if you try to win, your own teammates will yell at you. Add on top of that the HORRIBLE matchmaking (the worst I have ever seen) and the frustration just goes up. Even matches that I dominated (going 14-2 which is a lot for a 20 kill TDM) I felt like it was broken. I did good overall, probably running over a 2/1 KD easily, but never once did I feel that amazing sense of accomplishment you get in the best multiplayer games.

re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)

Bump!

I'm about 1/3 of the way through this game (I think).
Spoiler:
I just killed the Bloater in the school gymnasium. That was a frustrating but satisfying battle.

I'm loving it for the most part. The clickers are a pain in the ass to deal with (whether going stealth or just massacring them), and I always seem to be REALLY low on ammo.

I've only read parts of this thread to avoid spoilers, but I can agree with early comments that the friendly AI is kind of terrible; I was hidden and one of my companions "sneaked" on over to me, walking right into a clicker. That got us all killed. This has happened more than a few times.

I'm finding some parts incredibly difficult... mostly related to clickers (Man, I hate those guys...), and there's been some sections where I've died countless times while trying to be all stealth. Unfortunately, thus far, this game does suffer a bit from the "walk into area, clear/bypass enemies, keep walking to next area, repeat" syndrome.

BUT
I love the story.
I love the characters.
I love the atmosphere.
I REALLY like the gameplay, even considering my complaints.

I can see exactly why this was so many peoples' GOTY.

Game has not yet begun to shine at that point. All of the highest points, both in terms of storytelling and gameplay are quite a bit later. I look forward to hearing your thoughts as you progress.

That is awesome to hear, because I'm already all-in for the story.

This.

I think I mentioned in this thread that I felt like in a Quentin Tarantino movie.

I will also like to add that this game was one of the rare games that got better the second and then third time I played it as I increased the difficulty. Taking away your listen mode makes it a different game, but you get better so it does not feel harder. My final grounded run was one of the best experiences in games ever.

Re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)

I haven't used the listen mode since the first encounter with bad guys. I forgot it was even an option.

I cleared the hotel section.
Spoiler:
Falling through the elevator shaft and having to navigate the water-logged basement

may have been one of the most tense experiences I've had in a game.

Re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)

What a game!
Needless to say, the story was fantastic. The ending went in a direction that I did not expect, which was great. As others have said, Winter brings on some excellent variation in the gameplay, and I really liked how that whole section played out. It felt like a movie in all the right ways without going too far with it like The Order.

Still, I never fell in love with the gameplay itself. As I mentioned before, there was just too much "enter area, kill/evade enemies, move to new area, repeat." The puzzles were decent, but never really innovative. And the multiple "pallet on the water" puzzles were just plain lazy. Not calling the devs lazy... but even after the characters joke about the pallets, there's still one or two more times where you have to use one.

I initially hated, but grew to appreciate the continual lack of ammo throughout the game. You never get the feeling of being "fully loaded" and ready to blast your way through an area. Some areas required some very deliberate actions and planning, which was nice. These things were too few and far between, though.

Would I recommend the game? ABSOLUTELY. My complaints about gameplay did not overshadow the great story, scenery, quality, etc. It's a great game that deserves to be played.

So, nearly two years too late (the game came out in June 2013, right?)...
Highly Recommended - If you haven't played it, go play it.

I'm going to power through the add-on (Left Behind) sometime this weekend.

The add-on is great. And it feels tight. You can see that devs applied all the lessons learned from the game.

Finished the add-on. That was great. It was a bit of a slow start, but I absolutely loved the dialog between the two characters. Fantastic stuff. This felt like the right level of challenging without being overly frustrating, too.

Almost missed this. Glad you liked it Dan. In my eyes, it's one of the all time high marks for storytelling in games.

Them Naughty Gods.

Completely agree. Overall, there were a couple "obvious" changes in narrative in the middle of the game that maybe could have been done differently.
Spoiler:
mostly related to friendly NPCs getting killed off, because it's obvious that they weren't going to stick around through the next section of the game.

Nothing BAD about any of that stuff, just... expected.

But yes, overall, storytelling in this game is above and beyond anything I've played previously. It took the RIGHT elements of "cinematic" games and left out most of the BAD elements of that. In this game, I looked forward to the cut scenes and random dialog. Ellie and Joel are such well-developed characters. I want a standalone Ellie game, dammit.

I REALLY look forward to what Naughty Dog does after U4. I'm all-in for another mature game like this.

Re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)

I don't ask for a lot of sequels, but I would love to see more Joel and Ellie, even through they wrapped up their story quite nicely. They felt like the best duo from recent memory. Maybe they can even do another game with some different characters that have a run in with them.

Re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)

is there a learning curve to this game?

i'm having trouble of knowing where to go. is there clear cut paths to follow? i know you have to sneak around in the beginning, but i keep getting caught and die. does it take some to get used to controls?

i find them too 3rd personish. so not used to it...
