I check out the thread all the time in hopes of a BF3 night. I guess I enjoyed it the most out of all of 'em. Mostly because base camping drives me absolutely crazy. Doesn't matter if I'm the camper or the campee, I get zero joy from it. Probably the most important thing they fixed from previous games was making the spawn out of bounds for the opposing team. Just my opinion anyway.

But without base camping, It would've been really hard for me to get the trophy for taking down a Heli with a stationary RPG. ;)

I camped in a base where the RPG could easily be pointed at the helicopter spawn, and blew it up as soon as someone jumped in it :)

Glad to see you're still lurking!

And glad to see that the codtards still look in here every now and then.

Just because I don't have anything useful to say doesn't mean I'm not around. Then again when have I really had anything really useful to say? Your BFBC2 enthusiasm makes my balls tingle (and not in a gay way so don't get your hopes up). ;) Besides you never know when you'll get a Codvasion of exceptional douchbaggery.

You throw out that kind of invitation and I might consider shutting down operations for the 1Gig update that would be waiting for me if I pop in BF3.

Do the update while you are at work! I actually popped BF3 in the other day and played it for a couple of hours. Now that people have their own servers you can end up playing maps where each team has 300% tickets. I had a fun match of Metro where we started with I forget how many tickets, 850, 900, 750?

Really? That sounds interesting. My oldest is home this week and she has been playing LittleBigPlanet 2 and Lego DC2 demo while the younger ones are sleeping. I may let it download overnight or next week while she is at summer camp.

Yep, there are all sorts of ranked custom servers with different rules numbers of tickets, etc. Some are only jet maps, you get the picture. I would compare it more to like the PC environment in that regard now. I seriously think it would be cool for someone here to pick up the tab on a server for a bit and we could have whatever custom rules, etc. Pricing seems reasonable.

I haven't played BF3 since December. I'm itching to get back into it, but I'm too afraid I'll mess up my stellar KD ratio.

re: Battlefield Talk

So after my last post, I gave BF3 a go... Wow, what a difference since launch. There's a ton of servers to choose from. I picked one that said "big maps only". First round was Sienne Crossing. Like Shum said, each team started with 700 tickets. Holy crap was it epic. A full 12 on 12, very evenly matched the whole way. Everybody was playing objectives, and reviving teammates, and using the kits the way they're supposed to be used. Took me a little bit to get used to it again, but once i did, I was ripping it up in the tank. The one round I played lasted an hour. Crazy back and forth action the whole time. Very good times. The custom servers are very, VERY cool.

Edited to add: I think I started the round 0-6 but managed to finish 26-17 in KD department... and 3rd overall on the scoreboard. Not bad for such a long hiatus.

Big maps only sounds promising. All of the ones I hate are small (market, tunnel, subway). If only the shooting wasn't dogshit.

Rolled with OG a bit in BC2 tonight. We pretty much dominated, and I was in dogtag mode, which I haven't done in a while. I'm kind of bummed that my engi gun finally pushed the knife off of my top 3.

re: Battlefield Talk

If I remember, you mostly used to play support with LMG's. Now that you've become Mr Battlefield and diversified your style, you might find a gun that is manageable. I was mostly playing assault using the M4A1 last night. The recoil wasn't bad at all. My aim was total shit though. There are definitely more than a few weapons that have decent control.

At least load it up and check out the server browser. Almost all of them have a pretty detailed description of their rules (300% tickets, no shotguns, etc, etc). And there's A LOT of people playing, or at least there was last night.

They have also made all sorts of fine tuning adjustments to he gun strengths, recoil, etc. you may find that you enjoy it much more now.

While I agree with this in principle, there's also a downside. One of the unintended consequences of making an area out of bounds for only one team is that a team that doesn't care about winning can just hang out in their base and snipe/mortar with impunity. I've forgotten a lot of the map names in BF3, but I remember it being especially bad in the night map (Tehran?), the tunnel map (something Peak) and in the France map (Seine Crossing?).

When we completely overrun the other team in BC2, I'll usually find a new lobby afterwards, and I'll drop out of a game where our team is getting overrun. That said, I think there's a lot of tactical upside to being able to go in there and steal the other team's vehicles or stab douchebag snipers every now and then, particularly on a linear map where taking their vehicle allows you to grab the objective nearest their base and get behind them. And yeah, I do get some joy from it. :)

Bottom line: I wouldn't trade the freedom of tactical/strategic movement that make Battlefield interesting for the occasional protection of my base.

Custom servers sounds promising. Shades of Warhawk. Let's plan a BF3 night. I'll try to run the update today.

@ Meat,

Yes, the LMGs were nerfed from BC2. They weren't effective at range unless you were prone because of the crazy recoil, and they weren't effective up close compared to just about every other class of weapon in the game. I had unlocked an all-kits SMG (edit: looked it up...PDW-R) that I liked quite a bit and was using it mostly with the Assault kit. So I was basically back in medic mode, but with the extra annoying unneccesary animations that got me killed a lot because healing or reviving took forever.

I think now I'd probably end up playing engineer more than anything, first with mines, then with rockets...maybe roll with you in your tank.

I forgot how long the BF3 updates are going to take. Maybe I'll let it do it overnight tonight, if I remember.

I found out we're not having class this Friday so no homework and as it's my birthday on Friday (33 this year) I might be on BFBC2 or BF3 during the day to relax a bit. That said, my wife's been home sick for three days and may want to mummify on the couch in front of the TV. She caught the cold from our baby girl who caught it from me, only she has it worse than either of us did.

One quick note about the spawn areas... I believe one of the patches made it so you can't deploy mortars from inside the out of bounds area... or at least in areas that were out of sight from the other team. I don't remember people hanging out in their base being an issue at all in BF3.

story 07-12-12 11:07 AM

re: Battlefield Talk

I do, particularly in Grand Bazaar and Sienne Crossing. I had to make it a regular habit to run out of bounds, light up the mortar guy on the other team spamming from his deployment, and do my level best to rush back to the play zone in time. Racked up a lot of kills that way, I suppose, but it was annoying, too.

re: Battlefield Talk

I'm almost positive I read in one of the patch notes that they changed Grand Bazaar so you couldn't mortar from the spawn site. And even if you do set up the mortar, it has a limited range. You can't launch a mortar across any entire map, no matter how small the map seems. Grand Bazaar may have been the exception, but like I said they patched it so you have to be in bounds somewhere.

If the matchmaking is fixed, the guns are improved, the crap maps are avoidable, and they've moderated some annoying behaviors, my interest is peaked.

I'm still severely underwhelmed at the amount of destruction and the tactical integration of destruction in BF3. BC2 was designed with destructible hiding spots around most objectives, which makes for an interesting give and take as the map progresses. BF3 objectives have a greater tendancy to be either out in the open where you have to be exposed to move them, or they are are near indestructible cover, neither of which takes advantage of the destruction engine.

I also suspect I'll still hate the shooting, and at the end of the day, it's a shooter, so that's kind of a problem. I had found a gun or two that I didn't hate before I went back to BC2, so there is hope.

I think I played after that patch, and I still thought it was terrible...same with the crazy recoil that they supposedly improved at some point.

Is my beloved IRNV still "broken" after the December update? Ugh, that made me sad.

I've been thinking about going back to BF3 every once in a while, I have to be honest. I think what's been holding me back is the star chasing and Level 50 chasing on BFBC2, a game I really enjoy a lot. Now that I've achieved that, BF3 interests me a little more though my free time for gaming is highly limited these days so if I play I want what I play to be dripping with awesome sauce.

Maybe that's why being on a crappy team in BFBC2 makes me so bummed.
