Re: Battlefield 3
I'm getting ready to finally put my game in and give it a go. Not sure what to epect but a friend at work who picked it up last Wednesday told me he finished the SP campaign Sunday. He was disappointed in the length but said it was hard in a few places. He plays all the "Military" games and I asked if it was about the same length as MOH. He said yea but harder. MOH was one of the shortest games i've ever played and if that's true I too will be disapoointed.

Speaking of MOH, I've heard great things about the SP story. Is the Battlefield 3 SP story comparable? For reference, thuis far, my favourite SP campaign story for an FPS game is that of Bad Company 2. Not the most realistic but it was rather well developed.

Re: Battlefield 3
The BF3 story is a convoluted mess. It's very similar to Black Ops. A guy is being interrogated and keeps flashing back to previous missions that involve various people. It's hard to connect to any characters because you're frequently switching from one person to the next and between different locations/timelines.
I really enjoyed Bad Company 1 & 2. But I think that was mostly because I liked the characters so much. Unlike MOH, COD: BO and BF3, the two Bad Company games were a straight-forward storyline with the same core group of characters. So it was easy to get attached to those guys. I'd love to play another round with Preston, Hags, Sweets and Sarge.

If you're playing a Battlefield game for the single player, then you're getting it for the wrong reason. The Franchise has always been about great multiplayer.

Was there a storyline in MOH? If there was, I don't remember it. My biggest gripe was the numerous glitches that required reloading the entire chapter. I wonder if they ever fixed that?

So then the BF3 and Black Ops single player campaigns are like the BLACK single player campaign? Well that's wholly uninteresting. I don't mind switching characters but the interrogation narrative was a horrible way to string the story together in BLACK.
Yeah, the core group in BC and BC2 were great. I just wish they'd given Preston more personality. His backstory in the game manual (and what's briefly hinted in the first BC) makes him seem like Alex Moran from Blue Mountain State. If there's a BC3, I hope they allow him to be a little wilder and better fit for the team. Well, that and I'd like to know what happened with the gold between the events of BC and BC2.

I forgot to ask, TheBigDave, how's the Modern Warfare narrative? I ask because the latest ad I saw for MW3 made a big deal about the storyline.

Thanks for that. I had heard a lot of great things about the MOH story but if it's as unmemorable as you say... Pass. Shame since I was tempted at it's current price of $20.

I never played BLACK. So I can't make the comparison. The missions in BF3 and Black Ops are connected by an ongoing interrogation scene. The interrogation is happening in current time, and game missions are the flashbacks to previous events. I thought they pulled it off better in Black Ops, which had more interesting missions and some memorable set-pieces.
But for me, the MW games have been about cool missions, awesome sets and solid gameplay mechanics. And the storyline has just been something that ties that together.

Despite the flaws with MOH, I still had fun with the game. It's only 5 hours. There were some frustrating glitches (maybe those got patched). And the infinitely spawning enemies drive me nuts. But I ended up playing through twice, which I rarely do. So I'd recommend picking it up for $15-$20. It's not worth $60, but it's a good bargain bin game.

And that's not counting the piss poor gameplay (long levels with maybe one checkpoint towards the end and enemies that seemed to be impervious to bullets).
I know a lot of people didn't like the story in MW2. I didn't have a problem with it. It's hard to discuss the storyline without spoiling some of the twists and turns.

Re: Battlefield 3
I think the MW trilogy is kinda like Star Wars. The first one could stand on it's own as a complete storyline. The second one began stuff that will (probably) be finished in the third.

Well that's cool, I guess. I'm gonna see if I snag a cheap copy of the first game and see how I like it.

I absolutely LOVED the campaign in MW1 & MW2, WaW was OK (but rediculous with grenades), and I hated Ops.

I finally had time to play it tonight and was getting slaughtered by a some lvl 27 camping near the spawn spot. I did have the satisfaction of finding him right before the end and getting the most satisfying knife kill I've ever gotten

I'll try to get MW1 on Steam and wait for a sale on MW2. Forgot about WaW. I played and enjoyed the demo. It was cool to have Jack Bauer as my commanding officer.
