Maybe. If you did previously sign in, KA will think you're there even if you aren't in front of the camera.
I know because the kids played before me and each achievement popped up twice. Once for me as "Player 1" on the circle and then once for them as Players 2 and 3. I found it weird and since I'm an achievement whore, I went to investigate and saw all that "or see someone" stuff. Both times I booted up and noticed it was in my list it had 0 score (so it could be removed). Ah well, like I said, no biggie, I was just worried I'd start getting all the dance and fitness games on my list she would play. |

Well that's another piece of the strangeness, because all the achievements she earned did not do that.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
I get the feeling that Kinect will be the 'it' gift of the year and that parents will do anything to get it for their kids for Christmas. I'm not even sure if I'm allowed to ask a question like this...but I was thinking about buying a Kinect simply to resell it. I looked around today with no luck but got my name on a waiting list at a Best Buy that is supposed to get a shipment tomorrow.
Will buying one be worth it? I.e. will the profit I make be enough? Will it be super hard to find once the final pre-Christmas weeks roll around? And are people going to be going apeshit over this thing. On another note, I played this for a few minutes at Best Buy. It's fun, but I've had a Wii for a while and Sports Adventures seemed like old stuff...even when my body was in motion. The kids will love it though, and Kinectimals looks like a total winner. |
Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
What do you have to lose? Pay $150 now and in a month you either make a profit or you break even, doesn't really seem like a big risk.

On comparing it to the Wii, I never had that Wow effect that I had when I tried Kinect out at Best buy with the Wii. With the Wii it felt like you could just cheat and shake the wii remote. |
Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
I kinda see it differently. The Wii's been out for five years, so a lot of the full immersion gaming experiences seem kinda stale to me now. I enjoyed my ten minutes with the Kinect, but after two runs at the rafting game I felt done with it. I didn't have the "I gotta do that again" or "I need to beat my high score" feeling that I might have playing something else. To be honest, when I played the bubble/space game I wanted it to be over about halfway through the play through. I'm not the target demo, but I got bored. Part of that is because I feel like I've played these types of party games too much since the Wii's launch. The other part has to deal with the fact that I don't think the technology is there yet. It just wasn't smooth enough, didn't respond quick enough, etc. Say what you want about the Wii and only having to wiggle and waggle it for it to work, but it worked instantly and near perfectly the day it came out. Feels like Microsoft said "well, this is the best it's going to be for now...put it out."
I'm not an Xbox owner, so it really doesn't affect me. And it's only a video game, meaning I'm taking this way to seriously. But I think this should be somewhat scary to Xbox owners. This thing will be hugely successful. It'll divert Xbox projects away from the hardcore gaming community to create more mini game compilations that utilize the Kinect is minimal ways (jump, wave arms, duck, repeat). Same thing happened to the Wii. The Wii launch had some great "hardcore" games like Mario and Zelda, but what sold the most was Wii Play. So now every time I go into a store there is a bin of 200 crap Wii games that someone will buy for 10 bucks a piece. Surely Microsoft doesn't want that? This could happen to the Move too, but I feel as though Playstation has a clear idea of what they want to Move to become in the long run. "Yes, it's like the Wii...but we're playstation dammit and our shits not going to be limited to bowling." Just reading about people playing Heavy Rain with the Move controller shows what it might become. Can't play Heavy Rain with the Kinect though. I think Nintendo even realizes their (billions of dollars later) mistake. They know that people got overwhelmed with crap over the past five years. As a response they have started to really push a new agenda...throwback games...for hardcore gamers. Will those gamers come back from Uncharted and CoD, probably not, but at least we are getting some quality games. I don't even know what I'm trying to say. I guess it's that when the Wii came out it was mindblowing to me. Kinect just seems like a minor step. |

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
Sh-aun? Sh-aun!
Heavy Rain with the Move sounds about as big of a joke as Kinect Adventures is. And I loved me some Heavy Rain. Motion control games need to be unique to be good -- a vast majority of Wii games I prefer on a regular gamepad, and the concept itself doesn't really fit with many genres outside of puzzle games (and pnc adventure), sport/fitness games and racing games. Unfortunately, it seems Move will be about as successful as EyeToy, a shame because it does work better than the Wii remote but at the same time is almost completely played out at this point. The irony being that EyeToy had games that were very similar in concept to what the Kinect has, it just wasn't capable of precision -- so instead of continuing in that direction, Sony decided to take a step back and copy what Nintendo was doing instead -- the last time they did so, it didn't have great results either (Sixaxis). The Kinect is definitely a gimped product from what it should be -- I give Microsoft credit for making it as good as it is, but at the same time it feels like it should be better. On top of that, it really does have a limited range -- augmented reality, virtual pets, fitness and party games ... ehh -- wake me when the controller-free Minority Report-style RTS is out. |

And back to this thread for a second : Game Stop has said that Microsoft is doing a good job of keeping supplies coming and don't anticipate a shortage this holiday season. If over 5 million people view a $150 camera accessory for a video game system as a good deal this holiday season, then can we officially declare the recession as over? |

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
Didn't expect to see so many harsh reviews:
Joystiq The Verdict For all the talk of revolutionizing the Xbox 360 experience and making gaming more natural/ accessible, it's bordering on absurd how broken Kinect is when it comes to something as simple as working in your home. I find the technology itself fascinating, but the fact that I know a lot of people who simply won't get Kinect to work in their rooms beyond troubling. Given that Microsoft conducted a beta program with actual consumers, this issue is doubly surprising, but it could just be that Kinect just works that way (or doesn't, given your room) and there's no way short of redesigning the sensor to fix it. If Kinect does work for you, congratulations: you have what amounts -- for now -- to a novelty peripheral that is in no way geared towards the day-one buyer or "core" gamer. Microsoft conceived a potential game-changer with Project Natal, it just seems like Kinect was born prematurely. but when it comes to quality, there's simply nothing on the level of a "Wii Sports" or a "Gears of War" in that line-up...the sort of launch game that will convince you that your $150 was well-spent. Perhaps in aggregate you'll come away with that impression, but none of them manage to stand on their own. In addition, there's a whole mess of really dreadful games for Kinect which you should avoid like the plague. Games that either don't work or are the total opposite of fun. The first of these disaster games is "Kinect Sports," which clearly attempted to cash-in on the "Wii Sports" phenomenon, but ended up being a mix of sub-par minigames with poor controls. And, by the way, running in place wasn't fun when we did it in "Track & Field" on the NES...and it's certainly not fun now. "Joy Ride" is another one to avoid. The "Mario Kart"-style racer has you driving a car by sticking your arms out in front of you...something that will get old and exhausting after the first race (let alone after a dozen). Insensitive controls don't help, and you're likely to be slamming into walls more often than not... if you're a non-gamer who bought the Wii a few years ago to play "Wii Sports" and "Wii Fit," but you haven't touched the console in months, you should skip out on Kinect, as it's likely to gather even more dust in your apartment. As for the hardcore gamers, you should wait it out. Despite the cool tech, none of the launch games are going to be anything you'll be playing a month from now, and there's no top-tier, first-party title like a "Gears of War" or a "Legend of Zelda" to entice you. Those games may be coming in the future, but for right now you should feel safe in knowing that you're not missing out. |

Of course I still have my standard Wii-related problem of being a Lefty who can't wrap his mind around moving with the right hand or pointing a gun with his right hand. But at least this game doesn't require quick movements so it's less of a big deal.
^ I actually thought Kinect Sports turned out fine, especially when compared against Wii Sports. That said, it should have been the pack-in, not Adventures. For $50 it's a rip off. The Hardcore gaming comment is a give me. |
Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
Hey, I was just wondering : is there anything for the Kinect that's like "Gears of War"?

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
If Kinect does work for you, congratulations: you have what amounts -- for now -- to a novelty peripheral that is in no way geared towards the day-one buyer or "core" gamer. The only thing I'm disappointed in is the functionality in the dash. I was led to believe you could control the dash with it, which you can't. You can control a sub-dash, which is about the same as pulling up the guide button menu, with a limited number of options. Same for the voice commands. I mean, why bother losing the cool 3D dash for the flat design if Kinect isn't going to use it anyway? I love the audio functionality, what little I've used of it, but again, it's not global, only in the specific Kinect dash, so it's kinda pointless. It's disappointing if only because it works so amazingly well that I want it as a global feature to control everything. Imagine being able to pull up custom soundtracks in game without pausing, or removing your hands from the controls, sorta like the Ford Sync stuff. "Custom Soundtracks," "Play Dream Theater." Why have a guide button at all when you could just say "achievements" or "friends list" and have it pop up? My guess is the hardware is being pushed to the limits and to get that kind of robust functionality would require a new console specifically designed around it. They've shown the tech works, now I'm ready for a next-gen box with it built from the ground up with it in mind. |

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
It appears that way. I'm really surprised we didn't hear about that from the BETA folks during the PREVIEW. They should have told everyone how pointless the standard dash redesign was.

Perhaps in aggregate you'll come away with that impression, but none of them manage to stand on their own. I don't care how much this thing sells, I don't see focus shifting away from the hardcore gamer, at least not resources dedicated to the hardcore gamer. It's still a $150 optional peripheral. I mean, as an owner I hope it has more life than every other useless peripheral stuck in my closet, but I don't see purple overtaking the Xbox 360 aisle... that would just open the way up for Sony to take over that section of the market, which would be idiotic. I agree about the (lack of) dashboard functionality... I have no idea why you can't move the normal dashboard with your hands (voice would probably be a lot harder)... the PS3 dashboard interacts with the Move fine. I don't see this going for huge profit on ebay... I mean, the things are still available in console bundles, if you really wanted a Kinect you could probably just buy the cheaper console bundle and sell off the Xbox instead of paying a premium for Kinect alone. Unless the console bundles are also selling out? And this isn't directed to anyone in particular, but I hate the people who buy up a bunch of product, find they can't resell it, then return it to the store after demand has passed. |
Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
So can you scan real world items into a game like the early videos showed off? That was a cool aspect of the tech.
|
Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
All the Joystiq bloggers live in tiny 1 room apartments so of course they can't get it to work :p.
I actually thought Wii Sports wasn't very good (I enjoyed some of the Wii Play mini games more, laser hockey, fishing, tank wars) and I've seen various other sights compare Kinect Sports very favourably to Wii Sports. |
Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
My kid and I are totally liking it so far. One question : when the camera moves is it kind of loud and grind-y sounding, or is it just mine?
|
Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
I never hear mine.
|
Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
I've never noticed the camera making noise. Might be worth a return unless a bunch of other people chime in otherwise.
|
Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
When does the camera move? I haven't noticed it moving, so I'm not sure whether it makes noise (i've really only used it on the dashboard and in a limited amount playing Adventures).
As far as scanning real world items... I'm not sure any of the launch games has that capability. Kinectimals has stuff you can scan in the game, but those are tags that you scan in, not the objects themselves... |
Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
Well, I gave in and bought one. I shouldnt of but did. I didnt buy any games with it but I really want Your Shape Fitness the demo was pretty cool and could be a good workout.
Kinect Adventures sadly is a disappointment mainly based on the lack of content. Each mode only has 3 levels basically. Most of the games are fun though. Joyride demo wasnt bad control seemed decent. I came in first but holding your hands out like a steering wheel gets tiring fast. Dance Central while I thought wouldnt be my type of game was pretty awesome. Theres nothing like it out there. So far I am impressed with the kinect only had one issue when another person joined in KA and it couldnt figure out which is which. Suddenly I switched sides with them on screen then Kinect signed me out and changed my avatar to a women. I also wish when playing online with Kinect Adventures it would show you there pictures at the end of the event. too. |
