Hadnt planned on it for $150, but I caved and got in on the Kmart deal.

Shit, what was this?

Ah, $25 for the camera and another $15 with a game?

Calculating... Calculating... I think I did ok with Target.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

In Canada gamestop was offering a trade in deal where they'd bump up the value of any game worth more than $8 to $25... found $60 worth of turds that qualified and got my Kinect for free - then traded in 2 other turds (that I spent $20 on) to get Dance Central.

I had no trouble setting it up and getting it to recognize me - I haven't played much but so far it is definitely worth it for Dance Central alone - a LOT of fun, even if I look like an idiot playing it.

What is the Target deal on the Kinect? I did see the Buy 2 Get 1 Free for games.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

That was it. Although they have a standing 5% off your purchase when using the Target CC and I used a $50 gift card I had lying around.

So I guess it depends on how many games you were going to buy.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

Yeah, that's basically what I did. I did the Kmart deal (used some coupons from prior purchases to reduce the cost) on the camera and a game and got $40 in coupons, and then hopped over to Target for 3 more games via the B2G1F sale.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

We were at a friends house and played for about 3 hrs tonight. They had the adventures, sports, and driving games. I thought it was OK, nothing great. Glad I didn't cave in and buy one. I think it's just a glorified Wii with better graphics. Maybe in time when some better games come out I might change my mind. But for now, I'll be OK playing my games with a controller.

Had a bunch of people over last night for the PS3 Singstar party. Afterwards we fired up Dance Central and everybody loved it. I had friends asking me or I guess telling me that they thought Dance Central was worth going out a purchasing an Xbox (which they don't have) the Kinect and the game.

Stopped by a Best Buy today and my wife wants a Kinect more than ever ... so I guess we're getting one. So which games are the best?

I've yet to try it, but Dance Central seems to be leading the pack. Adventures (the pack-in) is fun too. I don't know if any of the other games are really worth the price, but one poster said Kinect Sports was fun. Kinectimals is good for the kids.

How good does it work for navigating through Netflix, Zune....etc?

So the lag doesn't bother people? I watched some people playing today at Best Buy and the 1-2 second lag seemed to be a killer. Do you just get used to it or is the system so forgiving it doesn't matter?

pinata242 11-07-10 07:20 PM

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

I haven't noticed much lag, certainly not 1-2 seconds. Maybe you can't judge it by a floor model with a bunch of spectators messing up the camera?

No NF navigation (yet?). Didn't try Zune, but ESPN and Last.FM were fine. I use voice commands primarily.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

So I've let the girls play for a couple hours today. The camera has a hard time picking up the 4 year old. It sees her well enough to do the games, jump in and jump out, but not well enough for navigating menus. She wants to pick her own avatar and I can't really help her. Picking with a controller would be a nice option to have.

I really love the snapshot function. Whoever thought of integrating the "roller coaster" camera pictures was a genius. Seems like such a throwaway feature, but it can be pretty funny.

Favorite moment so far? After a pretty good round of rafting my 6 yr. old throws up both arms with devil horns as part of her victory dance. Too bad the camera didn't catch that. She LOVES Adventure so much we haven't even taken the shrink wrap off Sports yet.

Netflix doesn't have Kinect support as far as I can tell.

I've only played with Adventure, but it doesn't seem to be a dealbreaker in these type games. The only one that it's really noticeable in is RallyBall but you kind of adjust for it while you play.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

Trying to resist the forum effect and not get this for my girls.... yet. They are 4 and 3. My son is only 1 year so he doesn't factor in to the equation atm. I haven't let the girls play anything other than a few PC games (Disney princess, Dora, etc). My oldest tried to play Feeding Frenzy 2 once with the controller and had a hard time. They both keep hounding me about Kinectimals. I made the mistake of showing them one of the demo videos. Doh!

Barring some of the space issues I've been reading about, do you think my girls are old enough to enjoy this?

pinata242 11-07-10 09:33 PM

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

My 6 year-old seems to be at the low-end of enjoyment. I think the thing has a hard time detecting her movements because she's so small. It hasn't been a big deal other than a little frustration here and there. It doesn't seem to recognize her voice either, but the 10 year-old is just fine.

YMMV with kids younger than mine.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

So I decided to get Kinect today (mainly for Dance Central). I gotta say, Kinect made me feel like a kid again. Much more fun than the Wii if you have the room. Played for about 3 hours and was drenched in sweat, haha (imagine dancing for 3 hours straight in the club..). I really feel this will be worth the money down the road when more creative games come out. Right now I'm having a blast just playing Kinect Adventures and the goofy kid's games. I'm sure the novelty will wear off eventually, but I'll take this over the Wii any day of the week. I feel like I get a ton more exercise and have fun at the same time. It's gonna be a really good tool for training games down the road (martial arts, dance, yoga, etc...) All in all, I'm happy with my purchase!

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

Just so everyone knows, if you buy the Kinect - when you take it out of the package and position it somewhere - don't force the camera upwards or downwards on the pivot it's connected to. The camera can actually move by itself automatically (mechanically). I'm just glad I didn't break it by manually moving the camera angles.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

Amazon has matched Toys R Us' Buy 1 Kinect game get one 50% off. With Amazon charging about $47 per game, that's about equal to the per game price of Target's B2G1Free sale (especially if you're a no-tax state for Amazon). I wasn't able to find Dance Central at Target, so this worked well for me.

I did the same thing. I had no idea it moved on it's own. Seems fine though.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

Nothing like a live demo, my girl was being wishy washy about getting one so I suggested going to Best Buy as I assumed they would have one running. Sure enough they did and sure enough, the next day I'm being texted to come home so I can hook it up.

The tech is pretty damn impressive but the room requirement is rather ridiculous. We have a pretty large living room for an apartment and we have JUST about six feet, so basically we are in "good" space, not "best" space and can't do two player stuff.

Michael Corvin 11-08-10 08:08 AM

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

I have plenty of room but I have a rear projection 57" floor model, and I stand in the "great" space but tend to wander backwards out of range.

Is it frustrating for her or does she love it? I have a 4 and 2 year old and have been waiting for some reviews of functionality, but I think she would love it.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

We're eying this wall mount (http://amzn.com/B0040Y3K9U).. it would give us an extra two feet IF it would work given that the TV would still be a foot or so in front of the camera. We've already discussed if we wanted to commit an afternoon to enjoying some multi-player, the couch can be moved. A little much, but I guess it can't be helped while we're still saving for a house.

The Dance Central demo was hot but there is ONE song on the tracklist I would actually enjoy (Dirty Vegas - Days Go By). The rest of the list is all stuff my girl likes though so she'll probably get it.

She got frustrated, but mostly because it kept defaulting to a male avatar and she wanted to pick a girl. Of course, that hinders her enjoyment because she doesn't want to be a boy, so she steps out. Like I said though, she didn't seem to have a problem in game(when she has her girl), just menus.

Another factor? Would screen size matter too? Some of the navigation buttons are in the far corners of the screen in Kinect Adventures. So if she stands in the middle of the screen/play area, her arms aren't long enough to reach those buttons, so she moves closer to them(left or right) and that's when the camera loses her. FWIW, she is very small(still under 30lbs., shortest in her class type thing) for her age and your 4 year old might not have those issues.

I assume there is a way to set up the facial recognition for her, but I haven't figured that out yet. Somewhere during the setup I got recognized, so it works for me, but I haven't managed to set it up for the kids yet. That should alleviate some of her issues at least.
