Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

I may or may not have recorded the audio on my phone. I feel bound to not post it, though.

Suffice to say, they talked about Japan and Pearl Jam as well as showed a still image from a proposed "Pink Floyd: Rock Band" mock-up (lyrics were from "Mother" with walking hammers in the background, quite a juxtapose) as well as a rough animatic of "Led Zeppelin: Rock Band" which was highly influenced by the fantasy/Tolkien aspect of the music. A rider dodging arrows and other fantastical elements mixed in with animated versions of Page and Plant. It was pretty epic.

The point of the panel as "please, please, please don't share this stuff!". As far as I know, no pictures (let alone video) made it out. Someone may have, but I didn't. The audio is just for me, in case I ever want to listen to it again (unlikely), but the slideshow that went along with the narration was funny! And some of those images were in IGN/Polygon stories.

Was there anything about U2?

Thanks. I didn't know that the panel info was hush hush. Guess that explains why I never heard anything after that pre-conference tease. Yeah, don't share the audio if they don't want it out. (But I do hope that one day some ne'er-do-well elsewhere on the internet will put out a detailed recap.)

I would've bought the hell out of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin editions of RB. :(

Not sure what to make of them actively extending the licensing on these songs at this point if RB is now on the back burner.

That seems to be a lot of time, money and effort for the few people left playing in this genre.

Unless they are trying to work the extensive amount of dlc into their new "not RB" game.

Not a peep. They did talk about player requested band/songs along with uniqueness stats on the forums (duplicate posts, random chatter, etc) and really broke down the "millions of posts" in a Muse thread down to a few thousand actual votes.

Another interesting thing was the difference in voting from the forum vs. the Facebook app. Of the respective top 10s, only 3 bands were in common: Muse, Avenged Sevenfold, and I'm-blanking-on-it-right-now-but-it'll-come-to-me-later. That sort of shocked me.

VGW: How Harmonix sparked the DLC revolution with ‘Rock Band’

Long, good article/interview with Harmonix' John Drake. Worth a read.

Snippet:

Harmonix also pursued what John Drake called “the white whale:” Led Zeppelin. “Led Zeppelin would be a game-breaking experience. It would change the game,” he says. “It just wasn’t the right time for them. It was either ‘We can’t get approval from this person right now’ or ‘They’re busy and they can’t get back to us’ or ‘The band’s not sure this is where they want to go with their music.’ It wasn’t like the band hates Rock Band, it was ‘Now’s not the right time and let’s revisit it in the future.’ We’re hoping to keep that relationship open. I mean, Rock Band‘s not dead. It’s just not being made. We own the IP. We hope to come back to it in the not-too-distant future. And we want to make sure that we have the ability to talk to Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones and The Beatles [...] again when we decide to come back to it, because the fans are still going to say ‘Where’s Appetite for Destruction?’ ‘Where’s Led Zeppelin?’ [...T]hey had their reasons, and hopefully those reasons will change in the future and we’ll have them in the game so everyone can rock out and have a good time.”

That has to be one of the best opening songs for a cartoon ever!

Harmonex has opened a "store" at www.Harmonix.spreadshirt.com and are selling merchandise previously only available at PAX, E3 and such. The coupon HARMONIX gives free S&H. Had to grab one of these "tour" shirts for myself:

BTW : I excitedly played the "last song" of Rock Band for my kids tonight, telling them it was an epic song about the history of Rock & Roll. They listened for about 30 seconds and then said "Oh, that's the Anakin Skywalker song!". I have failed as a parent. -ohbfrank-

So they knew the Weird Al version? Is that what you're getting at? If so, that's epic parenting not a failure.

good idea, now they can have your credit card info next time they get hacked instead of just your email & password.

Though I have seen licensed RB clothing in stores over the years - well, maybe I can only recall pajama pants at Target - kinda weird for them to start selling it themselves at the very end of the brand/genre's life cycle. Another area where hackey sack got in the way of their business plan?

But it reminds me that I still want to get one of those bass icon shirts like the one in Scott Pilgrim (only in all black). I'd probably go official if they sold that, but will likely have to hit up ebay for a knock off.

I don't know if it's allowed to be discussed here, so I won't go into much detail, but there are a few things brewing within the RB community that are pretty cool. Both of these things do not require you to mod your 360 or any of the RB files.

RB Harmonies project: There is a group of people adding in harmonies to the pre-RB3 songs.
RB customs: A pretty big customs community (some of them multi-track). They just released the full Queensryche "Promised Land" album, along with GnR, Zep, and a bunch of other bigger artists. There's also a full multi-track custom of Pantera's "Vulgar Display of Power" album.

I haven't messed with it yet, but probably will when I get some more time.

Just started playing some RB customs thanks to your post. Found some great songs so far.

Holy crap. Thanks for mentioning that. I never knew about that before. There are a ton of custom songs I need to grab. It looks like they converted all Guitar Hero iteration songs to be able to play in Rock Band.
All the RB Beatles songs are there as well. I know what I'm going to be doing this weekend so I can download a bunch of these songs.

I've got the Mad Catz/Games on Demand version, so apparently I'm SOL on being able to do this, according to the video I watched. Too bad--I'd love to be able to play some GN'R.

Thanks for the heads-up about the RB customs, Shag. Of course I traded in my disc after I got the Games on Demand version, which was discounted during a sale a few months back. Still, it's worth $25 to re-buy the disc (thanks, eBay!) in order to FINALLY play E.L.O. and Led Zeppelin in Rock Band. I can't wait!
