Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
Taking my kids to summer camp this morning, I passed a discarded yellow-capped Pepsi bottle on the side of the road. Two years ago, I would have pulled over and got that and helped clean the earth. I miss that promotion :(

If anybody was looking to buy a keyboard, they are only $39.99 (half off) at BestBuy, the stand is $14.99(madcatz, all metal). Picked up the last one for 360. Just barely had the time to get the stand together and worked through a couple of songs on Easy. It is going to take some work. It feels like it did when I played fake guitar for the first time. But I think I'll be able to get it down. The stand does help though. The whole key-tar thing would not have worked (at least not for me anyway). Nothing will replace my vocals, but hopefully I can say in a week or two that I can actually play it. (Since I'll never get down drums, but that is what my wife is for).
The stand was $14.99, though. I bought it a while ago and like it. Too bad I don't need another one. |

Looks like whatever Squires are on the market will be it for the foreseeable future. RBA link.
Also, some are reporting keyboards and stands 50% off at Best Buy stores. Is this a death knell for Rock Band? |

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
Hmm. I had always planned to consider the Squire from afar, with very little intent to actually buy one. But I'm not quite ready to concede total ambivalence just yet. Now I might be compelled to pick one up, like I would a OOP Criterion in which I have minimal interest.

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
The keyboards for all systems are $60 at gamestop. The one I picked up for 360 was still marked $80, but rang up $60. Also, my Kmart had the keyboard bundle @ $100, so that may become a good option in the next few months.

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
Pending the technology Rocksmith uses, Harmonix may end up kicking themselves for not going a route that allowed any guitar to work with the game. Forcing proprietary devices, even if they double as cheap real guitars, was a bad move.

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
The guitar is a lot different than I expected, I am thinking of selling it and just sticking with the real one I bought, maybe get rocksmith later.

In case anyone wanted this for the Wii, the bundle with the RB3 game and keyboard is $39.99 in a "Shell Shocker" deal at Newegg this afternoon (3:00-5:59 Pacific).

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
Although Harmonix thinks there are a tons in the retail stream, I tracked down what must be the last Squier Pro guitar in my entire region (along with the MIDI adapter). Here are my thoughts.
Some background - I've played guitar for 20 years and have played in bands for the last 10. 1) It's way too expensive. To be fully operational, you need both the guitar and the adapter, together $320 + tax. Compare this with either the version that comes with the game or even the full sized wooden model at $70 and you are looking at a substantial investment. Consider an actual Squier is $99, $79 even and the Pro mustang is $90 at amazon, this is pretty much a huge WTF in terms of price. 2) The guitar is a piece of garbage. I know that a Squier is an entry-level guitar, but honestly, this is even worse than that. First, the tuners don't really work very well, I couldn't even tune the guitar to concert pitch. I tried even a basic setup on it and even with that, buzz city. And one electric pickup is not great either. Plus, I have a strong suspicion the scale length is not Fender spec (it seems bigger). Not very comfortable. Plus the neck is absolutely huge, way bigger than even some of my Gibsons. I can barely play it. 3) The guitar does not track well. Even in practice mode, slowed to 70%, certain of the correct notes, it was not tracking well. Single notes are usually okay, but add in chords and the tracking goes to hell. 4) The game teaches you notes and not technique. As a real guitarist, I add in things like vibrato, move around the neck, slides, etc. But do this in the game and you break your streak. You have to hit things perfectly or that's it. It really doesn't feel like playing real guitar at all. 5) This may actually make real guitarists regress. Because you have to be so hyper accurate about hitting notes, it will take you out of your comfort zone and almost force you to play like a beginner. It was very frustrating. 6) I think the standard type controls is actually more fun. For whatever reason, I like the 5 note game better. I bought the Fender Wooden controller at the same time, which is the same size and weight as a strat, and I preferred it much more than real Pro guitar (and the plastic one too). Plus I got the red one and it's pretty darn sharp. I haven't tried the Pro Mustang, and I might, but truth be told, for me, I like real guitar for what it is and Rock Band for what it is. Maybe for someone who wants to approximate guitar, Pro is good for that, but if you are a regular guitar player, you'll want to go in another direction. These are just my thoughts, feel free to disagree. The Pro Squier is going back. |

I wouldn't say it's garbage. Maybe you got a bad one, I will agree that it is overpriced though. It also has a lot of the buzz/vibration you mentioned probably because of the plastic neck. It's good for what it is, although overpriced. I'm thinking of just getting rid of it and just working more on the real guitar i have. It isn't exactly what I expected it to be. I also didn't have any trouble tuning it, seemed to tune fine, but too much vibration for me.
You really hit on the main point of the guitar - it's good as a teaching tool and getting people interested in real guitar. As a gaming tool however, I don't find it very enjoyable. |
