As an example, there are many ways to play a note/chord and have it sound correct. HMX goes out of their way to try to find the way the artist made the sound, and not just the way the tabber(?) dictated it.

You know, this reminds me of that scene in "It Might Get Loud" with The Edge talking about all his effects and gadgets and the sound they make versus the note he plays. U2: Rock Band could be extremely boring.

For some things, yes. But I'd guess that barely 10% of their catalog has "official" sheet music tabs available. A lot of those tab books are not 100% either, even if they are the official versions from the label.

I don't have a whole lot of guitar knowledge yet, but as you go further down on the frets the chords start repeating, just in different tones. So a song can use the same shapes but sound very different.
Oh, and it's all about the tuning also. The way a song is written is far more deep and complicated than many realize.

Yeah, I don't have much guitar knowledge either. I'm only going from what I've read/heard.
I'm not really trying to defend HMX's decisions, as I think they're dumb a good portion of the time. However, just wanted to point out that in order to make pro charts the way they're currently doing it takes a lot of time and resources. Who knows how it pays off in the end versus just grabbing a tab from somewhere though.
I wonder how long it took them to chart Through the Fire and Flames.

RB3 had a title update today. No notes yet on what it has fixed, but I'm sure the "Squier Stars" thing is the main one.
EDIT: Someone on RB.com confirmed it fixed a bug with playing instrumentals outside of a setlist. Before, if you played one as a single song, it would lock the game. The workaround was to put it in a setlist as the 2nd song and then skip the first one. Now, you can pick these as individuals.

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
Hello friends and rockers,
We’ve released a new title update today which addresses an issue with how Rock Band 3 scores certain songs with Pro Guitar/Bass parts. There was a discrepancy in how the game dealt with songs using the 17-fret Mustang controller versus the 22-fret Fender Squier controller which resulted in scores posting with no Star values. This has now been resolved with today’s update.
While we don’t have any additional title updates planned for the foreseeable future, we hope this further illustrates our ongoing commitment to supporting the new Pro Guitars as well as you all who make our community so great!
Check below for the full list of affected songs. (note: to avoid redundancies I haven’t listed a song twice if it has an RB3 version in addition to the PRO Upgrade.)
RB3 Disc Songs Affected: 21
Avenged Sevenfold -- "Beast and the Harlot"
Jane's Addiction -- "Been Caught Stealing"
Queen -- "Bohemian Rhapsody"

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
Worth noting that Pope accidentally included "The Trooper" by Iron Maiden on the list of affected songs (and editted it out later), so that upgrade should be coming soon.
Really enjoyed the DLC on guitar today. The Fleetwood Mac songs are simple but fun. They thankfully made Landslide almost all HOPOs with as few forced strums as possible (and I was able to finally get HOPO-cidal Maniac), so that is a lot of fun. The Stevie Nicks solo songs are tougher, with EoS being an endurance test of alt strumming and Stand Back having a lot of tricky patterns within a very limited amount of guitar sections. Really good pack.

I hope it isn't an indicator of typical pro guitar sales, but I got top 6 place for both of the Fleetwood Mac songs (expert for Edge of Seventeen and hard for Dreams).

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
I didn't even think about looking at that.
As of right now, pro guitar leaderboards have:
Edge of Seventeen: 61 scores
Dreams: 40 scores
And as a comparison, Hold on Loosley has 596 scores.
As an aside, for those of you needing a ton of points on a song, I sight read Edge of Seventeen for almost 600,000 points on expert pro guitar. The chart is the same as Shag posted, except there are a few power chords as well.

I wonder how things will shake out with pro upgrades. The Mustang seems like a really unsatisfying compromise, and I'm sure a lot of the people who want to buy a Squier can't...near-total lack of availability, the general impossibility of finding a MIDI adaptor, and all that.

As for the MIDI adapter, it seems that's becoming easier to pick up as well. It looks like Amazon has the 360 and Wii ones in stock. BestBuy seems to have all of them, and MadCatz probably does as well.
I'm hoping that once the exclusivity license ends, they'll see a jump in sales and more people jumping on the Pro train.

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
I'm really fighting with myself over the Squier. I want it, but only as a controller since I already have a better real guitar. And the $280 (plus MIDI adapter) seems like a big pill to swallow for that. And I have a Mustang, and as much as I find it pretty amazing, it's drawbacks have limited me from playing as much as I'd like.

I would suggest you old out for a sale/clearance on the squier AND maybe check out that Ubisoft Rocksmith(?) game that should already work with your existing string guitars.
If you have the Mustang and already play stringed guitar, there's little benefit for you with Rock Band.
Question: Do you feel different about the Mustang purchase in hindsight now that the squier is out?

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
Not really. I like the Mustang a lot, and I really did feel like it was the better choice for me. For being a big button matrix, real guitar carries over almost perfectly. Plus, I'm going to try it as a MIDI solution, too.
But any time I'm dealing with single notes, it's a bit frustrating to land on the right stings because they're all the same thickness. And it's loud when playing chords. So Black Magic Woman was an all-around drag.
Truthfully, I think it's because I'm borderline OCD about instruments that I'm really considering the Squier. Knowing me and my will power, chances are that I'll end up with it.

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
There are a lot of people who derive more enjoyment out of playing a relatively-easy song they like then just trying to get a high score. I have every Police song on "Rock Band" and they're generally pretty easy on Expert Guitar but they're some of my favorite songs to play.
I know a U2: Rock Band wouldn't be Dragonforce: Rock Band but I know I'd like the music and I know I'd be able to play it.

No U2 hate, I'd buy it. Doesn't mean that the charting would be easier than you expect based on the sound of the effects which was my point.
If you know anything about me, I'm primarily a Hard player and only do Expert on the smallest tiers or with other people.

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
The site rockbandscores.com has been given access to the RB3 API feed, and now has all your RB3 scores (assuming you're connected to web). And in a HUGE development, Star Cutoffs have been added for all Expert songs!!!! You need to click through to each song one at a time so now I just need to figure out an easier way to get the cutoffs from the website into a spreadsheet. Any ideas?

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
Man, that just makes me so angry that RB3 doesn't report fractions of a star directly in the game for sorting purposes. I'd much rather replay the song I got 5.85 stars on than the one I got 5.01 on.
