I put in a pre-order for one of each color just as a placeholder while I decide on which one I actually want, deals elsewhere, and that sort of thing.

As a Nintendo fan since my childhood with an NES, this is a no brainer. Pre-ordered the black version at Amazon...

Re: Nintendo Announces 3DS (tentative name), 3D DS w/o Glasses!
I'm really undecided.
I want one. Mostly because the game lineup seems pretty steller, and Nintendo has finally gotten some decent visuals out of their hardware (not that the DS was a bad machine). I mean there is something for everyone with that lineup. Plus, I'm a sucker for nostalgia and Pilot Wings and Zelda alone almost make it worth it. Not to mention all the great DS games I've missed out on since selling mine a few years back.
The 3D effect may be a gimmick, but I'm actually pretty excited about it. I was disappointed to hear that some people who have had hands on time with the device say it is pretty limited.
Ultimately though, I'm just not sure I'd really use it that much. I barely have time at home for console and computer games these days. And really, what adult has the time when they are out and about to sit down for a Resident Evil session? Part of me still thinks handheld systems are best for kids who spend a lot of time in the back seat of their parents' cars.
iOS games may not be on the same level, but it's about all the portable gaming I have time for, I think.
Still, I will probably cave since $250 isn't that much, even if I would like to see it at $199.

Early adopters of the Game Boy Advance got an ugly trapezoid that required an external clip on light to even play. The first DS was enormous, ugly and had a small, dark screen. I think I'm going to wait to see if this trend continues and a much improved 3DS comes out in a year. Nintendo has too shaky a track record for initial releases of handhelds.

I don't know about that, I haven't had any issues with their first gen hardware, tho they generally do improve their products as they go. The original DS was an eye sore but still very functional (the Lite blew it out of the water though).

$250 for the unit, okay, it's a bit too expensive, but whatever... but games rumored at $50 has me bowing out of this one. Maybe I'll get a 3DS Lite in 2013... if it's successful enough to warrant one. I'm smelling a rare Nintendo flop--they're getting too arrogant again.

i won't upgrade for a few reasons. i rarely play my DS (only on vacations and when there's a decent game i want to play). second the cost is ridiculous at this point and the battery life is horrid for a portable.

Yes. If the games are $50 I'll be canceling my pre-order. It's absurd to even consider charging Xbox/PS2 prices for handheld games. Heck, I think even the PSP games that cost $40 are too much.

Is the $50 rumor just from Gamestop soliciting games early? I couldn't find another source...

It makes sense. If you think the graphics in a game account for $10-$15 of the price, you have to double that for 3D. Right?

I was expecting this to come in at $299 without any extras at all. This is a very impressive piece of technology, and brings something new to the table, so I would have to say that for $250 with a few extras tossed in seems pretty fair to me.

I can understand why you'd want that, but it seems like even if it happened, any investment in the DS line is a waste.
This isn't Nintendo's "Third Pillar" like the DS was (oh, wait...)
Anyway, effort is going to be made to support this hardware, 3D or not (which is toggle-able). The DS/i/XL is going to be phased out, sooner or later. Might as well put that money towards the next gen.

I'm going to wait out anything 3D to see if the fad passes. Count me in for a $175 or $200 3DS Lite in 18 months if it's still around though.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of 3D myself and I'm not buying in for a long while now. But I'm also not going to buy a new DS in the meantime. Just seems... short-sighted

Well, I figure if I can get $70-80 for my current Lite, then less than $100 isn't going to kill me and I will get plenty of use out of it while I wait for 3DS Lite.

If you were wanting a DSi XL, Amazon had them regularly on sale for $139.99 between Thanksgiving and Christmas. To me, the XL was a bad idea, mostly because they announced the 3DS before the DSi XL even was released.

Plus the larger screen makes the graphics look more primitive than they do on the DSi.

Mercenaries looks too arcadey. However, the single player Resident Evil game (the name escapes me) looks phenomenal.
