Nintendo Announces 3DS - 3D w/o Glasses!

3DS is a tentative name (but then again so was DS).

- The follow-up to the DS (apparently the DSi was a stopgap upgrade).
- This will be formally revealed at E3.
- Will feature 3D imagery without the need for glasses.
- Fully backwards compatible with DS and DSi.
- Tentatively due out this fiscal year (before March 2011).

STRAIGHT UP RUMORS from Nikkei (they're a solid source, apparently).
- It will have an analog stick of some kind.
- It will have built-in vibration.
- It will have a tilt-sensor.
- Wireless connections are sped up significantly.
- Stronger battery life than current models.
- Screens will be 4" or smaller.

Can I play Guitar Hero on it?

I hear they're going to have a First-Person Pac-Man game where the pellets actually come at your face and you have to make an audible "wakka" noise for each one to eat it. You'll make turns in the maze by using the tilt sensor. And the top screen will be the traditional, overhead map.

Or, if Pixy would actually source something we might realize it's not a joke.

That press release looks like a ransom note.

I'm not really interested in 3D, but then again most people didn't think much of the dual screens and Nintendo seems to be pretty good at getting these things right (Virtual Boy not withstanding).

I'm looking forward to 3D -- but not for gaming and I'm especially not interested in any handheld products ever since I got an Ipod Touch. I would imagine 3D would make things harder to spatially adapt to. I do plan on buying a 3D TV or two this year though.

The reason I don't give a crap about the latest 3D movement is because I already wear glasses and am not fiddling with glasses that go over my glasses. If they can pull this off without that nonsense, then I'm interested...

It's baffling when somebody writes as if 3D games aren't THE most perfect fit for 3D displays.

Speculation is that it will end up something like this already released DSiware game:

At least it will get more play time than my Wii

Wow, that's amazing.

I'm pretty sure this is a new screen thing though (or maybe a combination?).

Re: Nintendo Announces 3DS (tentative name), 3D DS w/o Glasses!

Yeah i'm sure it will look different ... the point is that it doesn't have to use expensive 3d technology to do cool 3d stuff. This japan thing simply uses the camera to track the direction the DS is moving in, and renders the screen appropriately, giving the illusion of 3d.

Re: Nintendo Announces 3DS (tentative name), 3D DS w/o Glasses!

Right, but since the DSi already does that there's got to be something more interesting to it (the 3DS).

I guess that's just my opinion/assumption on the matter.

E3 will be exciting this year, that's for sure.

I guess I should fax in my industry credentials and go to E3 now.

Interested, but I wonder if the 3d wow factor is lost a bit on a (presumably) small screen.

That video shows off the equivalent of head tracking.

The 3D display being written about is different, and it can't be shown off with a youtube video on a normal screen.

The DS is my favorite system so I'm excited for the next version. Parallax 3D sounds very cool and should work great on a DS sized screen. Should be an interesting E3.

One thing is certain : I'm not buying any more DSiWare games. Thanks Nintendo. Oh, and thanks Costco for your liberal return policy.

If you're actually in CA and can get in, there shouldn't be a reason not to go, eh?

Spoiler:
Get me Nintendo swag.
