New PlayStation Protection Plan provides added peace of mind
"With the PlayStation Protection Plan, you can extend the same coverage from the original manufacturer’s one-year warranty for one or two additional years. The pricing includes all shipping charges and repairs, which are performed by PlayStation-trained service technicians at SCEA-authorized repair facilities. The PlayStation Protection Plan is available beginning in May 2010. PSP owners can also choose the Accidental Damage Plan, which provides coverage for cracked-screen damage in the event of an unexpected drop. See pricing below:
* PS3 – 1-year extension ($44.99) or 2-year extension ($59.99)
* PSP – 1-year extension ($29.99) or 2-year extension ($39.99)
* PSP Accidental Damage – 1-year ($39.99) or 2-year ($49.99)
So, why are we offering this now, you ask? Well, we’ve heard your requests for an extended service plan that’s backed directly by SCEA. From the get go, we’ve been extremely committed to offering the best entertainment experiences possible. While both the PS3 and PSP systems are designed with future-proof technology and built for long lifecycles, we’re excited to be offering this service to those of you looking for a little something extra.
PS3 and PSP owners take note – the PlayStation Protection Plan is available to PS3 or PSP owners (both the PSP-3000 and PSPgo systems) who are still within their one-year limited manufacturer’s warranty. The PSP Accidental Damage Plan must be purchased within the first 30 days of owning a PSP system, and the plan is effective beginning on the purchase date. You can purchase the PlayStation Protection Plan by calling 1-866-716-7669. Additional details and are available at http://us.playstation.com/support/pr...plan/index.htm. Web site will be accessible later today."

I think my PS3 died. The light on the front is blinking red and everytime I start it up, it runs for 5 seconds then shuts down and starts blinking again. It's lasted me since launch, guess I can go get a slim now.

What about PS2 compatibility? That's gone now as well. Was Sony sued over lose of that feature?

the PS2 compatibility is a different situation. Those of us that bought an early model PS3 with the compatibility still have it, it was just dropped from newer models. The Other OS feature was retroactivly removed from all systems.

Hopefully you can eject the disk in that 5 seconds...and ideally you could run it long enough to delete your profile.

I'm just hoping that my hard drive is safe. I was about to buy a second PS3 for my bedroom, looks like that is now replacing the one in my living room.

Well, seems my blur-ray drive stopped working this past weekend. Strange that in the age of super sophisticated wonder consoles, the only on I haven't had a single problem with is the cheapest, lowest tech one (the Wii).
I was hoping, after four 360's and the RROD I was done with console failures.
Fortunately I am still under the factory warranty and my box is on the way.
Bummer!! I don't even use it that much. Mostly online with CODMW.

I'm fine with that. I changed out my hard drive 6 months ago, put in a 320 gb. I'll lose all my saves, but i'm okay with that (I lost them when I accidently erased everything on the old drive before putting the new drive in).

This reminds me... I need to backup my PS3 harddrive. I'm waiting on eggshells for my YLOD.

That's not surprising. Logic dictates the more complicated and fancy something is the more likely something is to break on it. Look at those old Toyota trucks or diesel Mercedes. You always see warlords in 3rd world countries driving them around on unpaved roads etc. The older cars are simple to maintain and operate so they last longer. As much as we love technology the more advanced something is the more chance something will go wrong.

^Yeah, and more so when it's as cutting edge as BD-ROM (especially in 2006).
I like the example about the warlords. I can just see the commercial: "because when I go out for some genocide, I need a truck that's reliable."

Just went to Best buy to get a new PS3 and they didn't have any. Thought that was a little weird, searched around online and found that Sony may be coming out with a new PS3 soon. Should I hold off or just buy the current model?

I'd say it's at best a couple of new hard-drive skus. The slim is a very nice machine and came out less than a year ago.
The real question is "Can you find one?"
They seem to have trouble meeting demand these days.

There could easily be a Slim Bundle announced soon. When is Move supposed to hit? Could be a bundle there too, if you're interested...

New bundle maybe with a different sized drive but I highly doubt a new PS3 will be coming out anytime soon since the slime just came out.
Amazon has them in stock. I also just seen some at Target.
