I have a Western Digital 320gb Passport I want to replace the 40gb with, not sure if it's compatable and no screws on the case and don't wanna pull up the rubber bumper and find it won't go back

This isn't likely the best, but I would do the following:

1. buy external case for laptop drive (can be had for like $5 shipped at amazon)
2. hook up your exsisting external drive to your ps3 and do a complete system back up (make sure your external drive is FAT32 formated).
3. Copy all the contents of your external drive to a computer.
4. Go to sony's site and download the latest ps3 firmware. Copy that to a FAT32 formatated thumb drive.
5. Remove the 40GB drive from your PS3.
6. Reformat your external drive (using FAT32) then remove your external drive from its inclosure and put it in your ps3.
7. use the update on the thumb drive to install the new hard drive on your ps3.
8. Put the 40GB drive in the enclosure you bought on Amazon and copy the back up files from the computer onto the 40GB drive.
9. Hook up the external drive to your PS3 and restore the back up.

Sounds plausable, but I thought the PS3 will automatically format the new internal drive?

It will. And if you're doing a backup and restore, I don't think you should need to upgrade the firmware again either.

So my PS3 has been spending the last three (or four?) nights background downloading the free Ratchet & Clank game that is 14GB. I check on it today, and the installation failed. It looks like I'll have to start another fresh download again :(

Do you have enough hard disk space?

I really hope they add Ico and Shadow of the Colossus to the list of free games soon.

I get failed intalls all the time. ALL the time. Any game that's of significant size fails to install. some that are smaller, too. Plenty of hard drive space. Been trying to get Warhammer Space Marine to install for days.

I wonder if there is an index issue. Maybe people experiencing the install failures can go through the steps to rebuild their index. I'm too lazy to google it at the moment.

That one installed fine for me. Maybe the hard drive in your system has some bad sectors in it.

I upgraded my PS3 a year or so back with a 500GB drive, so yeah, space isn't an issue. I hadn't heard anything about indexing before. I have several huge free games queued up from the deal last week, so it will be interesting if I see a problem again. This was a first for me this time, and especially frustrating due to the size of the R&C game.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

Just found this on the official playstation boards if you are having slow download speeds. Mine are fine so i won't try it, people on the thread are saying it works

http://community.us.playstation.com/...art=0&tstart=0

Slow downloads from PSN are a popular topic these days. My service is through Comcast, I think 12 Mbps as my desktop computer can pull about 1.4 MBps. The PS3, with default connection settings (no proxy) only manages *maybe* 100 KBps when downloading from the store. Not acceptable. Wired or wireless made no difference. I hav NAT2 status and uPnP turned on and confirmed working on my Linksys WRT54G with DD-WRT firmware. Running speed tests through the PS3 browser was just as slow.

Then I decided to setup a local proxy (Privoxy) on my desktop and run the PS3 through that. Speeds went to around 5Mbps! I figure Comcast is throttling (to death) PS3 traffic. Can someone else that has super slow speeds (<1 Mbps) on Comcast try this? The only disadvantage is if the computer is shutoff then the PS3 losses its connection.

Edit: this seems to help some people, but not all. The more detailed instructions below are copied here:
Assuming the computer is running Windows and your PS3 is on the same local area network as the computer:

Find your computer's IP address in the Control Panel -> Network Connections. This is probably something like 192.168.1.100. If it does not start with 192.168 then you might have a public IP and this won't work (at least not easily).
Download Privoxy from their website: http://www.privoxy.org/
Run the Privoxy installer. When it is done the Privoxy window should appear.
Go to the Options menu and select 'Edit Main Configuration'
Find the line that says "listen-address 127.0.0.1:8118". Should be about halfway through the file.
Replace 127.0.0.1 with the computer's IP address (should start with 192.168). The :8118 part should stay.
Save and close the configuration.
If you have a firewall on your computer you need to allow access to Privoxy on port 8118.
On the PS3 open the network configuration settings. When it asks if you want to use a proxy say yes and enter your computer's IP address and port 8118.
Make sure the conenction test works and we're done! See if your speeds are faster and let us know the results.

It should work on wireless too, although if your PC is also on wireless it might create too much wireless traffic to see any improvement. In that situation the data would be sent 3 times over wireless: 1) From the Internet/router to the proxy/PC, 2) from the proxy to the router, and 3) from the router to the PS3.
and an easier to understand walkthrough from SD

Spoiler:

Get privoxy.

Here's how to do it.

1. Install Privoxy, google to find it.

(you might want to set up a static ip for your computer, which is very easy if you can follow instructions. a 5 second google search for "setup static ip in (your windows version here)" will show you how to do this)

2. On your computer: type "cmd" in the search box (or "run" if using windows XP) in the start menu, in the black box that pops up, type "ipconfig" and then hit enter. Find and write down the 'ipv4' address, which looks like 192.168.1.##. You'll need it.

3. Open privoxy, click options, click Edit Main Configuration

4. In the txt file, search for "listen-address" by pushing ctrl and F at the same time.

5. Enter your ipv4 address in the line that doesn't have a # at the start of it.

So, do NOT enter it in the line that looks like this:
"#listen-address 127.0.0.1:8118"

Enter it in this one, without the "#"
"listen-address (Your ipv4 address here):8118"

Example:

"listen-address 192.168.1.10:8118"

Leave the :8118 alone, don't add quotation marks either.

Save the txt file, close privoxy and re-open it.

6. Now, set up a network connection on ps3 manually. Leave everything automatic/default until you get to proxy server option.

7. Simply enter the ipv4 address into the ip box, and 8118 into the port box.

8. Finish and save network settings.

If PS3 cannot connect to network, first triple check to make sure you did everything correctly and that the computer is still on.

If you still cannot use the PS3 online after triple checking, ask for help here.

My result:

Prior to Privoxy: 500-1000kbps
<object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/15wNA9TeXRc?version=3&feature=player_detailpage"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/15wNA9TeXRc?version=3&feature=player_detailpage" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></object>

^tried this...

Although the "test connection" results went from 2.1Mbps to 5.6Mbps, the actual download speed still remains at 1-2 seconds per mb (my speedtest.net result on my PC is 25.16 Mbps)

Looks like all or most of Amazon's gold box deals are video game related today and there's this teaser: "Upcoming Deal: This PS3 Headset is Officially Licensed by Sony" for the deal coming up at 6:00pm PDT. Likely, it's the Sony Wireless Stereo Headset which I picked up last month for $80 and they're awesome! FYI, if you're looking for a good headset that has simultaneous squad chat and in-game sound in them via bluetooth. It was a necessary change for our new home now that the bedroom is above the living room in case I want to blow stuff up late at night.

With all the free games I'm tempted now to actually pay for PSN. What's the best price for a year membership? Does it go on sale somewhere occasionally?

It's 50 bucks for a year. Sometimes Target puts the year membership cards on sale.

You can easily get your 50 bucks worth right now. Definitely worth it! The cloud saves is also a nice thing to have for those damn copy protected saves. Having two systems crash on me and losing some of those saves has made the cloud system very necessary.

Either a flip top or it slides?

The article I read mentioned that it was a flip top.

Meh. I'll keep my slim. A flip top just adds an extra step to the process

Not only that, I have it in a shelf where I have to load the discs from the front, as there no room above it for a flip-top for top loading discs.

Unless the 360 or PS3 shrunk to a Wii like size, I don't see the point in this. They both have a "slim" model that everyone is perfectly fine with.

I've read that it slides rather than flips. Either way, I share the "meh" reaction.

I would think this is a cost cutting thing, similar to the Wii extracting Gamecube compatibility.
