Okay, in that case you would back up the new system (which now has all of your data) to an external drive if you have one. Put in the 320GB drive, let it format when prompted, then restore the backup.

Awesome, looks like I should be able to do it this weekend. Thanks again.
One more quick question. I was planning on backing everything up on a 1TB external drive that has other data on it. Is that going to be an issue? Do I need to clear off that drive first?

You'll need to format a backup HDD in FAT32, so you'll lose any data on the drive, I presume.

Although, you can just format a partition as FAT32 and leave the rest as NTFS. If you have data on it, you could shrink it and create a new FAT32 partition.
BTW, Windows won't let you format a large partition as FAT32, so you would need a third-party app. I use FAT32Formatter: http://tokiwa.qee.jp/EN/Fat32Formatter/

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
So this summer I bought Burnout: Paradise and its DLC as well as the Back to the Future complete series pack. Everything downloaded except two items: Back to the Future #5 and the actual Burnout: Paradise game (the B:P DLC and BTTF #1-4 all downloaded). I went on some work trips and forgot about them and recently noticed / remembered them when perusing my downloads list. I have two separate problems and I wonder who can help me out:
Burnout: Paradise shows up in the download list but it won't download. It tries and after a while it says error 8002AD23 or sometimes 80029516. Either way, I can't get it to download. What am I missing?
BTTF #5 doesn't even show up in my download list. It's BTTF #1-4 and that's it. How do I get that?
Thanks for your help.

For BTTF, just search for the Part 5 in the PSN store. It'll show as Free for you and you can "buy" it and then download it.
You might check Burnout Paradise in the store and download that one from the store as well.

Thanks, Decker, that worked for BTTF #5 though it didn't for Burnout Paradise. Now I get an 80710723 error. I don't understand how I can get an internet error for a game download when other downloads work as does online gaming, Netflix, etc.

I would honestly call sony about that one, seems like an internal error with psn.

I use the PS3 as my media center: Netflix, blu-ray, etc.
I made some changes at home and I finally have a wired connection to the PS3, so I think I van finally use all my backup mkvs. Is the PS3 Media Server still the best option? I have a state of the art PC so I think I can use anything.
I'm in a gigabit connection too, so I think that should be fine. And yeah I made backups from my blurays, so I need to be able to play 15-20 Mbps.

I didn't think PS3 could play MKVs. I usually need to convert to AVI or MP4. The other thing is there's no way to copy to/from the PS3. Its a 2-step process. Copy from PC to USB Drive, then attach USB to PS3 and either play from there or copy direct to PS3. If you're talking about using DLNA server on the PC to play on the PS3, then yes that works quite well. Especially if both are wired, you shouldn't have any lag.

I'm pretty sure ps3 plays mkv, but running those through handbrake isn't a huge cost and you get quality conversions at a tenth of the space.

pretty sure it doesnt. Unless you're using a DLNA server that will do some special transcoding for you, and then you may run into bandwidth issues trying to stream that across the network. But a local mkv file on the ps3 HD or a connected USB won't play.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Maybe it matters what the streams in your mkv container are. I've done it before and I didn't have a PC powerful enought for on-the-fly transcoding. I abandoned it because I didn't want to watch on the one ps3 I had. I do know there's a simple ps3 converter tool out there to change some of the mkv stuff for ps3 consumption if the streams aren't recognized.
Anyway, I'd rather store 10 720p movies in 30gb after handbrake than 1 1080p mkv rip that either won't play anywhere or has to use heavy host CPU cycles just to transcode every time you want to watch it. Mpeg4 is very portable and as featured as mkv's container.

that could be about the streams inside the container. I havent fooled around with them too much to get one to work inside an mkv. I usually do the conversion like you said...

Last time I checked the ps3 did not do mvk. I just stream them through tversity or playon and they work fine.

I used MakeMKV to backup some blu-rays, kids movies. They are ~20 GB files.
I did some searches and people were recommending Serviio. So I tried that.
I had some issues, I had to open some ports in my firewall and stuff, but finally was able to make it work. But it seems it had some issues, because of the encoding? the size? I don't know. It can play the first 2 minutes fine and then starts stuttering. It was too late so I didn't troubleshoot too much.
So yeah, I want the PS3 to stream the movies from a DLNA server.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Anyone else use the video chat function? During the past month every time that we video chat we get major reverb during the entire conversation. It doesn't matter how far away we move the camera from the set or the receiver nor which PS3 we use. We have two separate PS3s and two eyes and both of them have reverb problems in two different locations in the house. Is this a new problem that has sprung up? Is there anything else that we can do on our end to fix it? I've tried every adjustment possible in the chat menu and no change makes really any difference. The only time we can cut down on the reverb is if we turn the main volume down to where you can barely hear the people on the other end. I know that I could use a separate mic to stop it but that shouldn't have to be the solution as we had never had this problem before. Thanks for your help and have a Happy Holidays!

Zero issues playing 20 GB MKV backups.
I just did a test though, but everything seemed fine.
