Figured it out. Just as simple as the PS3. Although my fear is that MS would care more about my crossing international lines than Sony.

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines
I install all the games I'm currently playing to my hard drive. I haven't had this problem on any other title but I haven't played much other than Red Faction the last week or so. Twice I've had the game crash with a "Disc Unreadable" error. Has anyone else had this when playing from the hard drive? I'm not sure what might cause it, but these are the possibilities I see in least-most alarming order:
1) Bad image on the hard drive
2) Periodic DVD check (I don't think it even does this) fails
a) Bad DVD
b) Bad DVD Drive
3) Bad sector on the hard drive this image happens to occupy
So, now I'm paranoid that my hard drive has a problem. I guess I need to move all my volatile data (saves, profiles, delilsted XBLA games) off for safe-keeping.
Has anyone else experienced this when playing from the hard drive?

I'm starting to think that either scott is as old as that thing in his avatar, or he's trolling us all pretty hard.

I usually play whatever I'm currently playing from the HD. I've never had a read error with an installed game.

These Gold Box sales always sound so good and then i never find anything i actually want in them. Do they ever do pre-orders? I would love to find UFC 2010 on the cheap.
Or find Deadly Premonition even cheaper.

are you saying the error is only happening on Red Faction??? If so, I just played that off the Hard Drive and had no problems.

It's only happens during RF but that might be coincidental as it's pretty much all I've played this week. Save file was never corrupted and because it never happened during saving. Luckily that game is very good about autosaving after you do anything significant so I never lost much time. It was just annoying but I'm more worried about a possible problem with the hdd or console.
I didn't think much of the first occurrence, but the second alarmed me.

I always install my current game(s) to the HD, and I didn't have any errors while playing Red Faction. I've seen the error you're talking about before, but I don't remember what game it was. I think it happened a couple of times and then never again, so I don't have any helpful input.

Back to USB->PC/Mac backups.
Upon discovering the Battlestar Galactica XBLA game was delisted from the Marketplace, I decided to run through my list of everything and make a backup (again of the full USB contents, not individual files) of the stuff that is irreplaceable.
Going off memory, I saved the following things:
Battlestar Galactica (XBLA)
Hexic HD (XBLA)
Juggernaut Playable Character (MUA2 DLC)
Does anyone know of a comprehensive list of things that are no longer available? Also, if you have any questions about this, feel free to ask here or PM me.

Crap! I forgot about the great Midway expungement! Here's a list of all the delisted games according Wiki:
Battlestar Galactica
Cyberball 2072
Defender
Double Dragon
EA Sports Fantasy Football Live Draft Tracker
EA Sports Fantasy Football Live Score Tracker
Gauntlet
Joust
Lost Cities
Paperboy
Robotron: 2084
Root Beer Tapper
Smash TV
Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
Yaris!
I know they said that if you bought the stuff in the past, it would always be there. I say better safe than sorry.

I didn't mean to imply all those games were Midway. I just forgot about the Midway issue and it prompted me to compile that list of everything. I had 4 more (Gauntlet, Joust, Paperboy, and Robotron) to add to my backup plans.
Wii's DRM is way, way worse than Xbox's. On the Xbox you get rights to play your stuff on any console as long as you're signed into live AND anybody can play your stuff on the Xbox it was originally downloaded to (or where the DRM was last transferred). Of course, the only requirement is you actually buy the stuff when it's available.
On the Wii it's tied only to the console. If you want to buy a new black Wii in May, you're fucked. If your Wii dies, you're fucked. Nintendo is capable of helping you transfer your content, but the process has seemed very YMMV and/or pricey from what I've seen.
