It would be great if somehow you could play your Xbox 360 games in the PC. Yes, the same discs you use in your console. Like a virtual machine. I know it can be done.
Or they can even limit this to download only games. |
re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines
That would be awesome, but I don't see any reason for them to do it. Why would MS want to enable you to play 360 games without purchasing a 360?

purchase?

In this context : I don't think Microsoft has much to gain by allowing PC gamers to play 360 games on their PCs. The company makes money from the sales of big-ticket Microsoft products such as the XBOX 360. It therefor doesn't really benefit them financially to go through the process of essentially making the PC into a 360 emulator, when instead they could just hope those PC gamers would eventually cough up the two bills that a 360 would cost. In addition, Though I know little about the details of hacking, I would certainly imagine that allowing a PC to play 360 games would make pirating 360 games a much easier endeavor. |

I don't believe it either, but here is my theory. :D
The Xbox 360 console is going to be cheaper with time, it should be under $100 by the end of 2012. So if they limit this to download only games they would be able to generate some business selling (more expensive) digital games. And the cost for them is $0. Except for the infrastructure of course. And it can be secure, as secure as the Xbox 360 is right now. But yeah, that's a long shot. |

Yes, I believe that's the term used to refer to when someone buys something.

First, does company make that much money off of sales of the XBox 360? Remember, they lost money per console sold for years, and only the last couple years have they actually made money, so I can't imagine they make a whole lot per XBox sold. On the other hand, depending on the development costs for programmers to create a 360 emulator, it results in a larger audience of users who can play XBox games, potentially more XBox Live subscribers and monthly fee (not to mention more advertising), more games and downloadable content sold, and also probably more sales for XBox controllers, headsets, etc for a new audience. Seems like it would be a good move to me  |

Another deal for Canadians:
Future Shop will be selling the 250GB slim 360 for $197.99. Tomorrow thru Sunday only. I'm very tempted to pick one up. |

It is possible certainly but not nearly as easy as you make it out to be. When programming a game for PC, you have to consider all possible configurations, and there are thousands of possible configurations of different processors, video cards, RAM, etc. When programming a game for console, there is only one possible configuration. So if your PC just happens to have the same processor, video card, RAM, etc as a 360 then yes it would be fairly easy to just put in a game disc and play. For the other 99.9% of PCs out there it is going to take a lot more work to get the game to run. That's basically what an emulator does. An emulator runs programs on hardware that the program was never designed for, like running NES games on your PC. The thing is though that an emulator requires a substantially more powerful computer than the original hardware the program was designed for. NES, SNES, and PS1 emulation have been done for a long time, but PS2 emulation is just now catching up. There is a PS2 emulator that can run several games moderately well but most run not so well, and that emulator requires a PC that can run Crysis with ease. So a 360 emulator? Forget about it. That won't happen for probably another ten years.

The greatest profits have always come from software, not hardware. |

They let PC players into Lost Planet 1's Multiplayer and it became a fuckin' mess. Clearly the PC gamers had an advantage in many areas. |
