re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines
I was holding off upgrading my original 13GB hard drive but considering the price for the flash drives I may go ahead. I can grab a 120 GB HD and transfer kit under $100.00. A 16gb is about half that for decent one.
From what I saw the new update is only for the 8 gig flashdrive now and with a update for the 16gig later. I also read that no usb drive support for now either...that's a bummer. |

I thought the exact same thing today.
It always makes me wonder what the hell is up when it takes a demo like GOWIII hours to download (and even after downloading you have to install it...jesus) and I can have a demo the exact same size downloaded to my xbox in 5 minutes with no additional install time. They have now realized that they made a mistake and are in the process of refactoring their PSN code. I made sure to put in my complaint about the long update/download times, which have not been as long as they were before. |

Is there an option to turn off Friend Notifications but not Achievement Notifications? Doesn't this seem like a pretty obvious option that needs to be implemented?

I really, really want that option.

 We discussed that in ODST the other night. It can't be that hard. There should be 2 options:
- disable friend notifications - disable achievement/award notifications That would cover everything. |

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines
I finally got my 360 back yesterday after sending it back for repair. I should have received it last week, but there was a snag with UPS. Still, boy how I've missed this thing. However, I had a major scare. I hooked everything back up, but the 360 wouldn't power up at all. I plug mine into a surge protector, which has never been a problem before, so I really thought the thing was broke in transit. As I kept checking connections and trying to boot it up I grew more and more frustrated. By the end I was cursing the 360 and I was ready to just say the hell with it and leave the system alone. It was then that I plugged it directly into the wall, and the damn thing booted right up. Go figure. I think a connection was loose, even though I swore I double checked everything.

Anyone else get the ad for $1/month of Gold Live on their dashboard recently? I saw it last night, bought a month then it said "sign out to make this change take effect" or something like that...but before I did I tried to buy 1 more month...and it looks like both went through, well at least my email shows the confirmation of that.
I signed out, then back in and the ad was gone. Bastards. |

both of the emails said they go into effect in Dec 2010...which is when my current sub expires.

Wow! But yeah MS recommends plugging it directly into the wall because that big gray brick has it's own surge/power protections in it. |

My imagination or is the dashboard lightning quick when loading the hdd content? Seems my game list works like I've always wanted it to, no matter how I'm looking at it.

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines
If anybody is at all interested in backing up save files and/or game data to their PC, here's what I'm doing. It's by no means the best solution but it appears to be working.
I'm doing this for my Bejeweled 2 save which I'm hoping to finish by the end of the year doing a little bit at a time. I'm at level 99 or 100 right now and I do not want to lose it. This is one of those save files that can't be copied for safe-keeping on another attached storage device on the 360, just "moved". It can only exist in one place at a time so it's a very volatile save file. Plus there's an achievement glitch, but that's a secondary reason. So instead of having my full 4gb drive allocated to the 360's file system, I went with a bare minimum 256mb format (just to minimize time and space needed for the remaining steps). Moved the save file from my MU to my USB drive. Brought it over to the PC and copied the entire contents (768mb due to the 512mb Microsoft gobbles up) to a folder I called 20100408. Once that was done, I went back to the 360, moved the save file back to my MU. Put the USB drive back into the PC, deleted everything, and copied the contents of 2010408 back onto the USB drive. Put it back into the 360 and voila! Two copies of the save file are now accessible at once. I'll be making periodic backups now, but I'm ecstatic that this works without issue. Hopefully it's an exercise in futility, but you can see how you can use this same method just to store a bunch of stuff you don't actively need on the 360 all the time. |

Another thing I noticed, when you select Device Options (Y) on the storage device selection screen, there's an option for "Clear System Cache" now. I don't remember that before, but I could be wrong.

I keep seeing that as well. I’m paid through July 2012 and still tempted to do if for a buck. I’m just concerned about it affecting my subscription.

360 Data->USB USB Data->PC Now you have a backup of the entire thing on your PC which you can restore to the USB stick, in its entirety, at any time. The rest of it is the process to make a copy of an uncopyable save file which, truthfully, was just my check to see that it all worked and not really necessary. |
re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines
Has anyone done any speed tests yet to compare between using the hard drive and a USB drive? I was curious if, say, Rock Band songs would load faster or slower from the flash drive.
The save game backup idea is interesting. I would have never thought to try that. |
re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines
My method just doesn't allow you to manage the individual files on the PC. It's all-or-nothing for the entire USB drive. Eventually the tools will be developed that allow us to manage the data on a PC like the 360 does it, but this is a stop-gap.
