Re: Borderlands

Call me crazy but I've played offline the whole game, getting close to level 30 or so, around 30 hours game play, and I'm having a lot of fun.

I may try online when I get bored of playing with myself.

I did the same thing, and had a blast. I played it a second time with my son, and it took the game up another level. It is just so damn fun playing it with someone else, and really extends the game.

Re: Borderlands

Ugh, I tried a couple hours of online and now my disdain for the game has grown to full grown hate. My only goal now is to push through to the very end, since I just got the third key.

I really feel bad for my friend who paid nearly full price for this dreadful pile. I really don't know what Kool Aid you guys are drinking to find this game so amazing.

Re: Borderlands

I've been playing this with Chew on PS3, and we're having a great time. He's playing soldier, I'm playing the hunter, and we're both around level 19-20.

Sure, there's not much of a story here, but I don't feel like I need every game to be story driven either. I find the combat and controls to be spot on, I'm loving the loot, the aesthetic is very cool, and the difficulty feels just right.

I'm not sure about kool-aid...seems like kind of a disparaging comment...and I don't think anybody is drinking Gearbox "kool-aid". They just made a fun little world to romp around in...Mad Max meets Fallout 3 meets wild west.

Re: Borderlands

Yeah, there isn't any "Kool Aid" here. You are in the minority Boba Fett, and not just on DVDTalk. Oh, and your little "jabs" at us were lame at best.

Spoiler:
P.S. You are wrong.

Re: Borderlands

Well to each their own as they say. There's plenty games out there I think suck and they would have to "pay me" to play. Heck plenty out there think COD, Halo, GOW, Bioshock and Mass Effect suck. But numbers don't lie.

Sorry u don't like it Bobba Fett, I do think you are in the minority though. This is definitely one of the best games I have ever played.

Re: Borderlands

Yeah, sorry for the Kool-Aid comment. It was rather late and I was exceptionally pissed at the game. I'm just extremely let down with the game. When it came out everyone was raving about how amazing it was and now that I've had a chance to play it, I just don't get the hype.

Were you a Diablo fan?

Some people just don't have that collecting obsession (which is actually probably much healthier for them ) and i wonder if those are the folks who don't get into Borderlands a good bit.

Re: Borderlands

While Borderlands is, at it's core, a FPS, I can get into it because of the loot and skill tree that it has over other games in the FPS genre. That and the art style is more acceptable to me that a gritty Halo, Gears, or CoD setting. Oh, and the cooperative nature of the game is way more enticing to me than competitive play.

The loot is what i go on and on about but it is the skill tree that keeps me playing. I would love to see more FPS go this route with the trees. It could make specializations within games like CoD so much fun. It could also allow for some things like "overpowering" perks in CoD because if the skills were treed properly they would force an inability to combine certain skills.

Re: Borderlands

I wasn't fully sold on the game myself until playing the zombie expansion, which had better structure, missions, environments, enemies, etc., that I liked way better than the ones found in the main game. After that, I ended up enjoying the main game more than I did before, but still not as much as the zombie DLC.

Re: Borderlands

Borderlands took me a while to get into it. In fact, when I first got it I played for an hour or two and put it down in favor of Torchlight and Dragon Age. It wasn't until I finished both of those twice that I came back to play Borderlands.

Part of it was the interface for the PC- with some console artifacts that didn't take full advantage of keyboard and mouse. Part of it was you start out shooting mostly puppies, er, skags, for many levels. And part of it was the only class I really enjoyed was the siren- I tried to get into the game with the other classes but just got bored.

In the end, I think it is a good game that just took me a while to get into. It's not the greatest game by any means, but I feel I untimely got my money's worth out of it, and will likely check out future DLC as they come out (but Mad Moxii's sucks).

Re: Borderlands

It's the freakn' insane Weapons and the outrageous stats and figures behind them. One has to wonder, 'who the hell has tha much time to figure out all of them without being the same". I went back and played GOW2 and felt shortchanged.

Re: Borderlands

Loot collection, reasonably exciting action, the 'atmosphere' of Fallout, a touch of RPG customization, with the ability to reset it and try another spec, and co-op. Obviously it's not for everyone, but I don't think fans of it are 'drinking the KoolAid'. It doesn't do anything incredibly new, but it does a lot of things well, that aren't often together, in a package that has a sense of humor.

If you haven't bought Dr Ned or Mad Moxxi yet:

Not sure if it'll be a one-time use code or resellable after finishing it, but another option. Doesnt' look like it saves a lot of money, but could be more convenient esp. if you don't buy digital content. Of course there might be a 'goty' release later on where you do save money a la Fallout.

Re: Borderlands

finished this game at level 36.
The boss was surprisingly very easy and my gear was so-so too.
Did not have a problem running out of ammo with him. I had way more than enough and lots of ammo were dropping on the floor which i didn't even pick up.
Fighting your way to the boss was way harder than the boss fight itself.

I havent bought either DLC yet, but dont know if I can wait till April, considering the disk doesnt save anything either, just a combined disk for same price as downloading.

Re: Borderlands

Ok, one last update on my struggle to finish the game. I hit the final boss at Level 32 and got killed when he was at 20% health twice.

I finally found someone online who was willing to tackle him with me and we beat him quite easily. Shockingly the frustration lifted once I completed the game. The guy I was playing with though did mention that a lot of people supposedly have modded weapons that do 10000pts of damage per hit and blast through the game with ease.

Is this correct, or merely isolated?

I've since retuned the game to my friend, who was shocked I really didn't like it.

Anger aside, I'd give it a solid B+ or 3.5/5 stars. There are enough bugs to keep it from being a perfect game, and the driving mechanic behind it is quite shallow, but I perfectly understand that the generally light nature of the game could account for it's vast appeal.

Needless to say, even though it's not the awful crap fest I was raging about it being. the game wasn't for my tastes, which is something I probably didn't realize until I had invested enough time into it where, quitting would have felt like a waste.

Sorry to hear about your experience but this game really is better with two or more. It's unfortunate but many here that love the game have played thru it not just once but twice or three times. The few times I played with others were the best.

I have 100 hours into the game with 2 level 50 characters:

99 hours --- played solo
1 hour --- played online

I just haven't had a good experience yet online. None of my friends play this game, and randoms seem to worse than normal in this game.

Randoms do suck in this game, especially those with modded weapons. Just play the game for fun.

Re: Borderlands

I just started playing a couple days ago, and just a bit shy of hitting level 8. So far I'm loving it. I was worried when it was released, because I heard that to unlock the best drops in the game you had to be playing co-op.

One of the podcast I listen to (GameRadio I think) was talking about Borderlands in their last episode, and one of the guys mentioned he seen better drops during solo, than co-op. This episode is what pushed me over the edge to try it, finally.
