Ubuntu takes forever to install on this damn console.

Alas, at least I didn't have to tear it apart to do so.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

I've read a few posts about popping/cracking noises with the Slim, which I have heard too.

I found a YouTube video with similar noises to what I hear sometimes with my PS3 Slim. Although they don't seem to be as loud as the ones in the video. I assume its just the plastic adjusting to temperature changes, but it gets annoying sometimes. The system is fine other than this noise sometimes when I turn it on, or turn it off.

Just wondering if this is a similar noise to those that have Slims that pop/crack on start up and/or shut down.

Don't forget the HDMI cable costs an additional $99 (15% off if you bundle it with the install service, though!)

Then again, if they get paid hourly and the Geek Squad guy actually stays until the new firmware is fully downloaded and installed, you end up getting a pretty good deal!

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

So, I'm thinking about going for the Sony Style deal and get a PS3. My wife has played and enjoyed a few of the Karoke games on the XBOX/360, however are there similar games for the PS3 to help convince her to buy the system?

While the price is good and getting a Blu-Ray player is nice, I'm worried that the game library is quite small.

First recommendation would be Rock Band 2 and/or Beatles Rock Band, which can be used just for karaoke when she wants, but has the added benefit of the guitar and drums for you if you're interested. If you will only ever want the singing side of it, check out the SingStar games.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

Okay, so what the hell is going on with my PS3 tonight? I turned it on, and the video output didn't work or got reset or something. It told me it detected an HDMI cable (no shit!) and asked me if I wanted to use it. I selected "yes" then it reset everything including my theme. Then I tried repeatedly to play my Mad Men BR disc and it just tells me "Unable To Play Disc".
Now I'm trying to download firmware 3.1 to see if it makes a difference, but as to punish me for my earlier post, it's taking forever to download the update.

edit: It worked after the update, but my sound output was screwed up and had to be corrected.

Good to hear Sony tests each FW update so well.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

According to a leaked Sega document, it looks like Sony is looking to bring PS2 compatibility back to the PS3 via software emulation and sell PS2 titles via the PSN store. Also it mentions "DC (Dreamcast?) Digital Titles" for exclusive agreements:

PS2 emulator for PS3 (confidential)
SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN (GTA Vice City/Sonic/etc)
For co Marketing money show PS3 controller on TV ads – similar to EA Madden Spots, NCAA, etc…

DC Digital Titles
If we provide a list of DC titles SCEA will let us know which ones they’re interested in having exclusively.
If we give them a long period of exclusivity they’ll give us more marketing support.
These both need to be true, but particularly the PS2 compatibility. And it needs to be a wide support, not just a "growing library of supported titles" like the 360 does.

I will keep my ear to the ground on this and maybe will sell off my 60gb and switch to a Slim if it pans out.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

I wonder if it would just be for downloadable PS2 titles? Thus, if you actually owned the PS2 disc, it still would not work.

I have a 60GB, and I could careless about BC at this point.

I also have that one. It's nice to have the BC, but that hard drive isn't big enough thanks to games like NFS Shift that require a 3.5 GB install. I know I should swap out the HDD, but that looks to be a little difficult and I'm afraid that I'll screw it up. (Hell, I stripped the screws changing out the battery on my son's remote control Spike The Dinosaur).

That glitch yesterday really has me stumped. I had played on the PS3 since the 3.0 firmware update and I'm pretty sure I'd watched BR discs on it as well. Why did it glitch out like that and reset all my settings? Anyway, I'm glad it seems to work now.

Did you turn it on by using the button on the console? If you press it for a tad bit too long, it'll reset the settings. It's happened to me three times, I think.

I guess I might have. I don't know why that would keep it from playing the Mad Men blu ray disc, though.

Same here, but to be honest I've only BC for God of War and that's it. I like that it has BC, but if I got rid of this PS3 to get the slim I don't think I'd miss it much.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

Ok, quick (and dumb) question. I'm going to order a PS3 thru sony and get the $100 credit. So, I was going to buy the PS3 Slim, but I see the 80GB model is being offered with a free DUALSHOCK 3 controller. Is there any reason the 80GB model is less desirable than the slim? I don't anticipate filling up either HDD anytime soon or needing a 2nd controller ($~55) right away.

Uses more power. Runs hotter apparently.

But the BD drive on the 80gb is supposed to be better. And the 80gb is considered prettier.

If Blu-Ray is important to you, the Slim will bitstream the more advanced audio codecs.

Which one? The slim uses about a third less power. However, I don't know if that's compared to the original models or the 40GB. They've had so many revisions I've lost track.

Yeah, the main feature the slim has that the others don't is that it can pass TrueHD and DTS-HD MA as a bitstream instead of the PS3 doing the decoding. There shouldn't be any sound quality difference, but some claim that jitter is a factor when the PS3 decodes. Whether you could hear the subtle difference or not, I don't know.
