I've been loading the maps for 20 minutes rather than 30 for more variety and hopefully decreased frustration.

Still, I think I speak for everyone when I say "just buy the DLC!!!" You'll absolutely get your money's worth.

Once you decreased the sensitivity, you were much better. In the top left of your screen, you'll see a little "sound" symbol next to your username. If it's lit up, we can hear you, so just adjust till it only comes on when you talk...or turn off "open mic".

The only differences from before is that I've been setting up 20% team damage and zero seconds to respawn. I've also been making every map 20 minutes, except for the lobby, which is still 30.

Otherwise, just get the usual 5-6 bread-and-butter maps along with whatever else you find appealing.
