Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest

Anyone seen this before?
My wife said "the screen went white" when she was playing RB2 the other day; it just happened to me when i went to Marketplace, with some vertical lines, and again upon reboot. (Ignore the dark corners, thats just the way I took the photo, the room was dark-ish; the cross hatch video artifacts is the potential problem.)

Of course I'm out of warranty unless I get the RROD, and of course I do not have the money for a new box.

I've been accepted to the NXE update preview, but I haven't received a message to download it yet.

It's not a good sign. Your best bet would to be to try to force a RROD, I think.

Speak of the devil. I turned it on again, got the checkerboard. Turned it off, unplugged power, reseated power, turned on again; it made a sound like it had a hernia, and is flashing the three red lights. Off to Xbox.com.

So, not every game will be smaller, but when they are, it is clearly worth it
Tried RB post update and it stayed at 4.9 GB for me.

Anyone tried any of the GH games? Those are most of what I have installed since they get a lot of play around my house. I'll reinstall them if it will save some space, but don't want to blow a lot of time if these titles won't save much.

RB was 5.6GB for me before I re-installed it to 4.9GB.

It's about 10 min per install. Not like you'll waste a lot time even if it does nothing.

Interesting, well I just did get RB used at Half Price Books in the last week or so, so maybe I didn't install it the first time until after I got the dashboard update.

Yeah, but generally those are 10 mins of gaming time, watching the install go... I don't get near as much gaming time as I have in the past, even with 2 360's in the house among other consoles, due to competition for the various TV's, and with my time in general...

I'll give GH:WT a whirl and see if it compresses better post update as I know for certain I installed that quite some time back.

That's exactly what happened to my second box, about a week after it had returned from RRoD repair. They sure do great work at that repair center, yes sir.

Engadget: Upcoming Xbox 360 Netflix update is still gimped, Microsoft thinks you want it that way

"If you haven't been lucky enough to preview the upcoming Xbox Live dashboard update like we did, there's a good chance you're eagerly awaiting its August 11 release so that you can finally modify your Netflix queue straight from the box. If so, prepare to be disappointed... or, uh, thrilled when you find out that the new experience isn't quite as comprehensive as you might have expected. It restricts users to perusing the Top 50 films in any of a handful of categories, meaning no searching by title and no browsing alphabetically.

Why? According to Microsoft's Ben Smith, Director of Program Management for Xbox Live, that's how you want it. He says: "I think when people come to Xbox they're not really looking so much for functional, they really want to have fun, they want to be wowed." We're saying "wow," all right, but for entirely different reasons. There is a morsel of good news, though: if enough people indicate they actually like function and want an honest-to-goodness, full-featured Netflix experience Microsoft is fully prepared to upgrade the service. Again. Eventually."

Joystiq: Microsoft: You want form over function with Xbox Netflix. Us: ?

"Ben Smith, director of program management for Xbox Live, has befuddled us by stating that the Xbox's "Netflix lite" approach is to give a more "video rental store" experience to customers. Speaking with MTV's Multiplayer, the executive also said, "I think when people come to Xbox they're not really looking so much for functional, they really want to have fun, they want to be wowed."

Please, stop. And consider us "wowed" by that quote! Netflix has built an empire by avoiding almost every horrible aspect of the "video rental store" experience. As visually pleasing as a wall of pretty boxes is at the local rental mega-chain, Netflix's ever-growing dominance in the space gives credence to the notion that people don't mind (maybe, even enjoy) the ability to search through thousands of movies quickly and efficiently. If Microsoft wants us to have "fun" and "be wowed," it'd be by giving us the ability to search for a movie on our Xbox 360 and (if available for streaming) play it directly from there. The Xbox 360 has built its marketing and brand around the "core" gamer audience, the folks who likely aren't scared or confused by something as basic as a "search" function. "

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest

I don't mind the current Netflix setup. I can update my cue on my computer easy enough and it updates my movie list on both my Xbox and my Samsung BD player almost instantly. This is a non issue IMO.

Now what would be really cool is if I could stream my Netflix movies, via wifi, on my Zune and/or G1 Phone.

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest

I was a little disappointed i couldn't search on my 360 the other night. I was watching some streaming TV and wanted to see if Cloverfield was available to stream. There was no way to do that on the 360 so i had to walk to a computer to search. It just seems a silly limitation.

I actually don't really want them to add more functionality to Netflix there is enough crap to slow this damn thing down and don't need more. All I want is for them to add a quick launch for netflix so I don't have to leave a game to the dashboard and then get the netflix .

They already added like 5 menu options (if you have the update already). I really don't understand how a Search would slow anything down more than populating their list of new movies in each genre (with their appropriate graphic).

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest

Microsoft informed us this afternoon that its initial offerings of Games on Demand, the company's selection of downloadable Xbox 360 titles, will be priced between 1600-2400 -- that's $20-30 in American credit card currency. We got a little curious after one price was revealed in a video earlier today, but we wanted to make sure about the rest.

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/05/xb...between-20-30/

Wow I wonder what game is going to go for $30, if that is the case I think I will just buy them used.

The games they show in the picture go for about half that when buying used. Nice.

Why would you compare it to buying used? Is that a fair comparison? All those games retail for about what they are asking on the service. You lose resale value but you gain convenience.

I do have the update and don't really care about the new menus added, also your kidding right on making it slower everything makes the xbox slower it is slow to load the friends list how hard could that be.

Actually i am not kidding. The friends list populates much faster for me now and i didn't notice any speed drop with the new Netflix menus. Now i realize this is just personal experience but that is really all i have to go on.

Yeah, I've also noticed that the friends list loads much faster for me as well.

Re: The Official Xbox 360 thread - thread hardest

I signed up for the 'preview' yesterday at lunch and got the update last night. I have to eat my words, the friends list and games list are super quick now. Of course, that could all change once 25 million other people update their systems.

The game ratings thing is cool. Gave Zuma 5 stars despite it kicking my ass last night.

That's about all I checked out.

Mine is much faster too I was using that as an example of random things that are slow that really shouldn't be slow amongst the history of things that shouldn't be slow.

Speaking of the update, I thought you were supposed to see how many years you've been on Live next to your Gamertag. Where's that at?

Go to the My Xbox row and the 2nd option (after current disc) is your profile, click on that. This is also where you change themes that I can never remember where to find it
