I know the slider is very cell-phone trendy, but I'd much rather have it flip open like a DS so the controls AND the screen are protected.

I love my PSP and wish I had bought one sooner. My DS is great for puzzle/brain games but when I want to feel like I am playing a game on par with the Wii or PS2, I just have to throw a game into my PSP. Most games look that good to me.

Far as I know, there was some sort of ghosting issue with the PSP-2000...so it seems you can't get one that is perfect. But again, maybe ignorance is bliss. It's exactly the reason I have never looked or studied what edge enhancement is on dvds. They say once you know about it, you see it all the time. So I keep myself ignorant.
Right... so with the Go coming out, I guess we'll never see a 4000 that fixes the screen and doesn't introduce new problems? I still have my launch PSP, but I want to see how reduced the load times are on the newer games. Oh well. As for PSP Go: I already have a sizable collection of games on UMDs that it wouldn't be able to play, so I guess I'm not the market for it. Even if they did allow you to download the games you already own (and hey, why would they do that? It's not like they give you the PS1 games for free if you can prove you owned the originals), I'm pretty sure they wouldn't allow my imported games.

HD Gran Turismo 5 trailer

Apparently part of the reason the game has been taking so long is because they now have the full NASCAR and WRC licenses. The trailer is real-time, although they can obviously dedicate more of the system towards the graphics since it's just replay footage.

I do remember being completely absorbed by the original PSX game for months on end -- didn't like what they did with GT2 and haven't played the other games in the series aside from the Concept demo a while back. At this point, I play maybe two new games a year, so I might be in the mood to get hooked on something like this again... whenever it comes out.

I have two words for you: Burnout Paradise

I used to love Gran Turismo as well, but like you, I lost interest in the later models. Remember the AWD Mitsubishi 3000GT? That thing was unbeatable! They really perfected the sim in the first one and only upgraded the graphics and number of cars (to the point of being overwhelming) after that. These days, I find the "realism" of GT to be completely sterile and frankly, boring. I prefer my racing games with absurd speeds, crazy drifts and spectacular crashes.

If you're looking for a driving game with a wide variety of content, jaw dropping graphics and a robust online community, look no further than Burnout Paradise. Plus it's only $20.

Burnout Paradise is fantastic and I'd rank it there with Test Drive Unlimited as the best racing experience this generation. (TDU is open world but instead of giving you only a city and its outskirts, like Paradise, gives you the entire island of Oahu).

The only way I am buying GT is if it still has Top Gear in it. If I can't practice going across Hammerhead, I don't see the point.

2009 E3 Confirms 41,000 Attendees, June 2010 Return
by Simon Carless

June 4, 2009

E3 show owner the ESA has announced attendance of 41,000 from 78 countries to this year's event, revealing the 2010 E3 Expo will take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center from June 15th-17th, 2010.

Debuting a press release as E3 wound to a close, the Entertainment Software Association, which scaled up the show again for this year after a couple of years of smaller E3 Business Summits, said that 216 exhibitors showcased their products at the event.

The company confirmed dates slightly later in June 2010 for next year's event, which will again take place at the LA Convention Center in Southern California.

According to the association, "The 2009 E3 Expo was designed to better meet the needs of exhibitors and attendees by focusing on value, while maintaining the excitement and energy that fuels the $22 billion U.S. marketplace for computer and video game entertainment."

Alongside the announcement, and in sharp contract to criticism of last year's E3 from a number of industry leaders, several major executives praised the way that this event has turned out.

“The ESA has put on a great show for the game industry," said Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello. "E3 2009 reflected the vitality, innovation and global presence of a rapidly growing industry. I'm already looking forward to next year's event."

“Xbox 360 was pleased to be a part of a rejuvenated E3 this year and to see the interactive entertainment industry really shine and reach new audiences,” said Don Mattrick, senior vice president, Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business. “We look forward to being at E3 next year and continuing to redefine the future of home entertainment.”

Zelda and Clank?

Zelda is one of my favorite franchises, but I think it might be due for a bit of risk taking. I'd love to see a "future Zelda" in the sort of city you'd see in Final Fantasy with some new weapons that aren't sword, bow, bomb, etc.

I kind of agree, but by that same token if it's going to be so radically different why not create a new IP? That's what bothered me about Wind Waker. They could have easily had a new classic character on their hands in the cel shaded style. People complain about them rehashing the same series over and over yet these little opportunities pop up where a new IP could work.

Why devote all that time and effort and money to a new IP that may not go over as well? Before I get bashed, Okami could have easily been a Zelda game with a new paintbrush mechanic... how much better would it have sold with the Zelda name?

On the flipside look at Wind Waker. I'm sure it sold well because of the name, but look at all the backlash and shit they took over it. So they go in the total opposite direction for the sequel.

But they got a DS franchise out of it, right?

Fair enough. All three companies got lots of grief for sure. With that said I'm not sure why anyone would be that surprised that ANY company wouldn't go back to such a successful well. Heck, SMB 2 wasn't even orignally a Mario game! So 20 years ago, Nintendo had already realized that people wanted more Mario.

Why waste millions of dollars marketing a new property in this market when you don't have to? I mean I get what you're saying, but it's not as if Nintendo hasn't introduced any new properties over the years - they just haven't been nearly as successful as the old ones. At least that's the way I see it.

While the new SMG2 is too new to tell, Nintendo actually does a fantastic job reinventing their franchises. The problem is that it takes sooo long between iterations that people get antsy, so I have no problem with the occasional Metroid Prime 2.

There are exceptions, of course. Animal Crossing, Mario Party, etc. But in general, they don't just release a graphical upgrade of their core franchises, they totally revamp them.

Sequelitis has set in, though... how many new IPs were shown at E3, and how many of them are being talked about rather than the numerous sequels?

Really? How exactly has Mario Kart evolved over the last 4 systems? They released a plastic steering wheel that has absolutely no control? Yay.

Sequels are one thing, but totally whoring the same thing over & over sucks. If every game didn't already have Mario in it, I could probably be excited about Galaxy 2, but instead it's just more of "We can't sell shit if Mario isn't involved". I don't understand why people gobble up every game that has Mario involved in it even if the game sucks or has nothing to do with the original Mario character, like Mario Strikers, Mario Sluggers, Mario 3vs3, Mario Power Tennis, Mario & Sonic Olympics, Tetris, etc... I guess that's their bread & butter, but personally I can't stand it, and I think I deserve better for my $250 than having Mario rammed up my ass if I want to buy a game. As for Wii sports, great, but why has every 'sequel' sucked (Wii Music, Deca Sports, & Wii Play)? Even a game that should be great on the Wii sucks, a la Tiger Woods 09.

Well I thought the backlash was stupid anyway. People crying that Link wasn't "adult" enough. I thought Wind Waker looked amazing. The sailing parts, ugh, but the look was great. Personally, I don't care what characters they use for the game as long as it's enjoyable. Whether it's Mario or as yet unnamed platforming mechanic, I don't care.

I was a hater when I first saw the cell shading. It didn't take long for me to love it. I thought Wind Waker was a lot of fun. The purple and black smoke was cool too.
