Nope. It was the PSP-Go. But Nintendo was smart, said that shit was stupid and scrapped it.

Hexic would only be free if people actually downloaded it (and had an XBL acct), so not every 360 sale means a Hexic 'purchase'. I honestly didn't know Hexic was free until about a year after I bought my 360. I wasn't interested in XBLA games at the time and never looked through the list. Did Microsoft even tell people Hexic was a free game? I believe I bought a few games on XBL before I realized they had a free game.

Another example I can think of is the RB DLC "Still Alive". I'd say 90+% of the people I randomly play with online only have that song. Is "Still Alive" the best selling DLC? It has to be.

I'd be interested to see how many copies of WiiSports sold in the U.S. that weren't bundled. I can't imagine that number would be high at all...who would buy it, and why? I understand it is/was a system seller, but with it being bundled I don't see how it counts as an individual sale for that software.

A couple articles about WiiSports sales:
Spoiler:
Wii Sports passes Super Mario Bros as top-selling video game of all time
Posted by Jonathan Oosting | Man Zero January 06, 2009 07:23AM
Categories: Wii News

NintendoThe little game that could has, is and done did. Wii Sports, thought by skeptics to be merely a gimmick to show off the capabilities of the Wiimote, is now the top-selling video game of all time, according to VGChartz.

Like the former record holder Super Mario Bros, Wii Sports owes much of its sales success to bundling, as it shipped with nearly every Nintendo Wii sold (except in Japan and South Korea). To date, the game has sold 40.24 million units, while the Wii itself has sold upwards of 45 million units.

But can a bundled game be considered the "best-selling" game of all time?

VGZChartz, Jan. 3: The point of view taken by VGChartz is that:
1. The bundling of Wii Sports with the Wii console is integral to the success of the Wii console - Wii Sports adds value to the package and isn't "given away" with the console. It is purchased alongside the console.

2. The game isn't bundled in Japan and has managed to sell at a 45% attach rate with the Wii console showing that many Wii owners in Japan bought a Wii for Wii Sports.

3. Bundle sales of all other games are counted. Super Mario Bros wouldn't have sold 40 million as a stand-alone title but who can say how many it would have sold - maybe 20 million, maybe 25 million. Same is true of Wii Sports, Tetris, Duck Hunt, Super Mario World and most of the other titles on the best seller list. Sure, the act of bundling the game with the console will serve to increase its sales but to totally remove the game because of the fact it has been bundled is not right either. It is totally conceivable that as a stand-alone title Wii Sports would have sold well over 20 million units by now given the attach rate seen in Japan and also seen with both Wii Play and Wii Fit in the west. So to remove the title also seems totally unfair - especially given point 1.

While I understand the above justification, it's clear that bundling the game at launch led to a buzz that the game would not have received otherwise.

For instance, I recall going shortly after launch to Reno's, a sports bar in East Lansing, for the sole purpose of playing the hard-to-find Wii. Miller Lite and a local radio station teamed up to give away a Wii and brought a console to the bar to hook up to a large high definition television. They only had Wii Sports, and although it underwhelmed graphically, it was a hit with most patrons.

For those at the bar that night, Wii Sports became the game they associated with the Wii. And they probably told their friends about it. Who probably told their friends.

So would Wii Sports have been a hit if it wasn't bundled with the console? Perhaps, but it certainly wouldn't have sold 40 million units based on its merit alone.

That said, more people paid for Wii Sports, either directly or indirectly, than any other video game in history. That's certainly saying something, and it is another in a long series of triumphs for Nintendo.

Spoiler:
Wii Sports the best-selling game ever?
Friday 8-May-2009 4:28 PM Sports title has now sold over 45 million copies, likely surpassing sales of NES classic Super Mario Bros.
26 CommentsNintendo has revealed global lifetime sales figures for first party Wii and DS titles that shifted over a million copies during the fiscal year ended March 31.

Topping the list is Wii Sports with 45.7 million copies sold, including those bundled with hardware. That total likely puts the game's sales ahead of those of Super Mario Bros, which has long been considered the bestselling game in history with over 40 million sales. The 1985 NES classic was also bundled with hardware.

When approached, however, Nintendo UK said that it couldn't confirm that sales of Wii Sports had overtaken those of Super Mario Bros.

Elsewhere in the data, Nintendo said that Wii Play sales are just 200,000 copies shy of 23 million units, followed by Wii Fit on 18.2 million and Mario Kart Wii on 15.4 million.

Nintendo Wii
Wii Sports - 45.7 million (includes sales bundled with hardware)
Wii Play - 23 million
Wii Fit - 18.2 million
Mario Kart Wii - 15.4 million
Smash Bros. Brawl - 8.43 million
Super Mario Galaxy - 8 million
Mario Party 8 - 6.7 million
Link's Crossbow Training - 3.76 million (includes sales from Wii Zapper bundle)
Animal Crossing: City Folk - 3.38 million
Wii Music - 2.65 million
Mario Super Sluggers - 1.26 million

You're right about one thing, that number wouldn't be high at all. In fact the number is zero. You can't buy the game separate from the system unless you buy a used copy.

If it weren't bundled, I'd still own it.

Then how can it 'sell' 40 million copies? It didn't sell any, the Wii did. How does one SKU break into two seperate categories (hardware & software)? If Duck Hunt was bundled with SNES (I don't remember), wouldn't that make it the best selling periphal of all time? Doesn't seem right (even though the Mario wheel may have sold more). While I am openly anti-Nintendo, these questions aren't to bash them. I seriously don't understand how a system sale counts as a software 'sale'. I would have the same questions if the XBox was bundled with Halo.

So would I, without regret. I'm not bashing the game, it's easily my favorite Wii game, I just don't see how a 'forced sale' is considered as a purchase freely made by consumers.

They bundled both Halo and Halo 3, and I'm sure both counted toward total sales.

I don't consider bundles to count either, Sony's revolving door of bundles like Resistance, Motorstorm, Uncharted or MGS4 for example(MS's Lego Indy for another :lol), however there is always an exception to the rule.

Once the hardcore crowd ate up the launch window supplies, people bought the Wii for WiiSports. Period. The average consumer that kept the system sold out for two years doesn't give a shit about the Marios or Zeldas. They want to bowl and play tennis with their friends.

If the game was sold separate like Japan, I think it would have sold just as well.

Re: E3 Expo 2009 : June 2-4 - news, info, coverage, etc.

WiiSports sells the Wii. Without it bundled the Wii would not have done nearly as well.

Why? Because the sales came from word of mouth going from neighbor to neighbor, mom to mom, family to family, about how cool it is to be able bowl realistically, or play tennis, or baseball on this little white box in your living room.

Without the game its just a little white box.

Not at launch, which makes a huge difference, and not for the life of the system (so far, for the Wii). If Halo 3 would've launched with the 360, the sales would've been much higher in both system & software sales (of course). I'm not so sure about Halo being launched with the original XBox because it didn't have a following yet, but after gaining a fanbase with Halo 1 & 2, an H3 launch bundle would've been huge.

Of course it (and the 3 other free songs) are the best "selling": http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/ga...?p=1&of=0&sb=2

That's sorted by XBLM "popularity". I'm not sure how that is actively calculated, but it obviously isn't necessarily most over time because very recent paid-DLC offerings are up there. But, consistently, those 4 free songs are right there among the top 10.

Actraiser was Enix, now Square-Enix. It wasn't Nintendo.

Ahh you're right.
Still all aspects of Actraiser could take good advantage of the Wii controls.

Jimmy Fallon as mainstream press.

Won't be long before it's on Conan or Good Morning America, though, so I know what you mean

Yeah...I was gonna go with the fact that nobody would see it anyway, but instead decided to take the shot at Sony. I had to pick a path and commit dammit! I knew others would pick up the slack!

People hate this "gimmick" on the Wii but now that its on the 360 its somehow different?

People will play it for 15 minutes, and the fun will wear off.

At least with the Wii you have something tangible to hold and there is some type of physical feedback. With this you are just slapping wildly about in the air.

If this becomes the new way all games are controlled on the 360 then i imagine you will hear a bunch of bitching. Until then it looks like there will be specialty games for it and perhaps support will be added to other games but the main controller controls will remain.
