I only have 10GB left. It doesn't really matter as I don't have any videos or audio on the drive other than game data. That's what BD/DVD discs are for video and streaming audio from my PC or CD/DVDA/SACD are for IMO :D

Has anyone else had any problems with their PS3s freezing while in the XMB? Mine froze twice the other day while scrolling through my music files. I had to shut it down by holding the reset button down for like 5 seconds.

Mine has frozen a few times in games, but I don't think it has in the XMB. I always assume it's a software problem, since it's only certain games.

12gb? man, that's like couple of divx movies and you're done...

I stream all my divx from the PC or on a CF card. I have been tempted to toss all my music on here, but it is also just as easy to stream that as well. I keep saying I'm going to replace the HDD, but so far I haven't needed the space.

Well, my main PS3 died tonight. Mid game it shut itself off and now when I try to turn it back on it beeps at me then changes to yellow and finally flashes red over and over until flipping the power off. And I can't even get the disc out of the system.

I called this morning and they're sending me the box to send it in for a repair. Gonna cost 149 bucks. Hopefully I'll get my same system back so that I can re-install my 320gb hard drive with all of my settings, saves, etc.

That sucks, how old was your PS3? and what model?

Sorry to hear, man.

I'm a bit worried about mine. It makes some noise when the disc drive is spinning, plus a green screen will flash when I exit or enter a game or when a movie loads.

Are you using HDMI?
The green flash may be because HDMI. It has to make a "handshaking" every time that it changes resolution...

But yeah, you may have to worry about the disc drive spinning.

It was a 60gb PS3. I bought it brand new in January of 2007 and the extended warranty ran out a little over a month ago. Figures doesn't it? It seems like problem I ran into is a bit more than a rare occurence as I was surprised to find so many posts when I Googled about people having the exact same thing happen. I know they ony warrant these things for a year upon purchase but I sure wish console makers would put out quality product that would last for years. Sad thing is that I could probably go buy an Atari 2600 from a flea market, flip it on and have it work without a problem. At least I have a backup PS3 but that particular unit :( has a lot of stuff that I'm worried about not ever having access to again: Rainbow Six Vegas 2 file (level 29 Elite), over 40 Singstar songs (that are locked to that particular unit and can't be re-downloaded to another PS3), Rock Band 2 content and game save and over 500 cds that I had accumulated in my music category. All of my stuff was well put together. I still have the internal hard drive, 320 gb that I installed, but have heard that if I put it into another unit that the unit will want to reformat it first which will completely defeat the purpose of having a hard drive in the first place. Any suggestions or previous experience would be greatly appreciated. :)

I am indeed using HDMI. The drive is what's really concerning me. I don't know how much noise is normal.

dsa_shea, yeah, it seems there been issues specifically with that model, and they appear after the warranty has expired. We have even talk about it in this thread, I think a couple of months ago.

I really hope you can recover, and use, all of your data.

I hope so. If they just fix my unit and send it back to me I should, cross my fingers, be good. I'm keeping my 320gb hard drive and putting the old drive back in since I've been told that they format the drive (for whatever reason).

Ugh, the 60 gig is the one with the problems? That's the best version there currently is, and once they run out of replacement parts, what then? Ugh.

Plus, every single launch Playstation I've bought had one of the widespread problems. PS1 had the "must play upside down" laser problem. PS2 had the "cannot play CD games" laser problem. I have no doubt my 60 gig will eventually succumb as well.

You can just take your drive out and send it with no drive at all.

But you can't just plug your drive into any PS3 and have it boot up. If it is put back into any other unit it will need to be reformatted first before use. It's about as stupid as can be. If it weren't for that I wouldn't mind they sent me a factory refurbished 60gb but since it is that way I prefer to get my system back.

^ that's correct...

so, did you ask them that question when you request the repair box? I hope everything works out. The original 60gb models are rare now a day...

That sucks big time. I have the same model and bought it about a month after you bought yours. I'm dreading the day I'm out the $149 to fix it.

It is a bitch and it came just a few weeks after shelling out a few hundred dollars to get a cv joint replaced on my car. Sons a bitches can't make anything that lasts these days. It was like someone suddenly and unexpectedly killed over while watching television.

This is why I only buy hardware at Costco.

Now that I think about it, I did get my PS3 at costco (online) but I thought they changed their return policy for electronics (since they were getting abused for so long). Also, the major problem with returning the 60 gig is that you won't get full backwards compatibility with the new models, even though they're cheaper.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - October 08 edition

My biggest worries are my Rock Band file, Singstar downloads and my Rainbow Six Vegas 2 save with level 29 Elite. The rest of the stuff can be copied onto a drive and then recopied back on my PS3. The other stuff is locked and will be a bitch to recoup or impossible. Also, I really enjoy having the memory card slots and feel that it would be a bunch of shit to pay 149 bucks and have them send me a system that is a lesser unit than the one I'm sending in. I tried to find a place locally to fix it but to no avail and i'm not sure I trust the other online repair services so I had no other choice.

No, still lifetime except for three things: TVs, computers, and cameras.

But yeah, with the 60 gig you might want to pay to get fixed. But I'd just keep a PS2 around if there were really any old games I had to play. Can't you get a PS2 for pretty cheap?

Re: Official PS3 Thread - October 08 edition

i don't understand why people want to "abuse" their PS3 by playing PS2 games on it. Especially you're putting a lot of hours on it... I know, it saves you space, but is it worth it? Long hours of PS2 RPGs on the PS3?

Actually, i'm glad that i got rid of the 60gb model and "upgraded" to a 320gb PS3 and a slim PS2. The only thing i really really miss is the build in memory card slots, very handy. However, nothing an external hdd can't fix...
