Ok...I take the above post back. 3 hours in, and this game is really growing on me. They really made something special with this one. Still wish the detective mode was not so blue...

It was mentioned on our last show RE the Batman demo that the Dectective Mode was almost too good and may be an issue as you'll never want to be out of it. Unfortunately, that's been my feeling thus far completely.

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

Ok, just got my copy today.. Let me preface by saying that I never have the time nor the desire to play a game for more than an hour at a time straight. That said, I played AA for 8 hours straight today, until i had a headache and my eyes hurt. I figured it was time for a break at that point. This game is amazing...

Now, I want a punisher game using this engine :P

Spoiler:
The third scarecrow part where the places are switched was freaky. My screen glitched up and I thought it froze. Then the cinema started with joker driving the batmobile.. that was super surreal.

Also, nice nod to the fans of the comic. If you lose to bane, he picks up batman and breaks his back over his knee saying "I will break you batman" That shit wasn't in the movies, and likely unless you read the awesome "Breaking of the bat" storyline you won't get it.

I also like how the enemies start reacting all scared when you start taking out their buddies, and the fact that you can see how their heartrate is, and how they are feeling. I was really expecting one guy who was freaking out to have "Condition: Shitting in pants"

Only complaint that I have, and it's small. Sometimes when you hit X to jump up to a ledge, if you aren't exactly lined up, he will just roll instead a few times until you line it up right.

That is exactly how I handled it. Took me a few tries to figure out the timing of everything, but once I did, I barely got touched.

Spoiler:
I just beat Bane. Love the way Batman took him out with the Batmobile. And the Scarecrow section, which I thought was going to be lame, turned out really well. I had to stop, but now I know there's a Batcave on Arkham Island! Crazy.

They really packed a lot into this game. I can see that trying to solve every single Riddler riddle will take a long, long time without a guide.

Wowwweee. This game has me hooked. It's just so well done, everything feels right. I never feel like I'm not in control, even when the camera zooms in and slow mo's. The lack of any noticeable loading is fantastic. Way to go!

I'm guessing you already know this about the Riddler's trophies, but there are some
Spoiler:
cheat maps in the game to help find them.
I'm still stuck on a few of the riddles.

Spoiler:
That would probably explain it. The minute he starts to make the motions to do his run, he's locked into that direct path. So if you stay far enough away you have plenty of time to move.

So how did most of you guys start the game? Normal or hard?

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

I started on hard and I'm up to where I just
Spoiler:
put Harley back in her cell
so I'm hoping that it doesn't get too insanely hard past this point.

There have been a couple of times where I thought I was going to regret giving it a go on hard, but so far I've figured it out and got through it. Like I said earlier, this isn't a game where they use "hard" loosely like some games do - they really mean it here.

I love the combat in this game. I hope other games where you have to fight multiple baddies at the same time think about adopting something like this. It's just so freakin' fun and really lets you feel like you're totally in control, especially when you get upgrades and you really have it all figured out.

Did you all stop for a few minutes and listen to a bunch of bad guys talk about
Spoiler:
Joker telling them all to kill their sisters
?

That was disturbing yet funny at the same time. The dialogue is so great in this game, from stuff like that to the people describing what Joker has said in the past, to the riddles, to even most of what Batman says
Spoiler:
in a room full of gas I cut the rope this guy was hanging by so he fell in the gas, and Batman says "I can't let that man die!"

I love it all.

I love it when the scanner tells me all the enemies ahead are unarmed and I just casually walk up to the group and start cracking heads. I feel so empowered

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

Anyone know if the game allows you to explore after you beat it? Trying to decide if I should start doubling back for riddler stuff.

10-15 hours, depending on difficulty and how many secrets you decide to go after.

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

Can you carry over your level and upgrades to the next playthrough? Or when I start Hard, am I going to have to start all over?

I ask because I notice the optional Riddler stuff gives you experience and I was hoping to run through Hard without worrying about collecting stuff.

I think I'm pretty close to the end, and I've put in about 10-12 hours. But I'm only 51 percent complete.

Spoiler:
the botanical garden, got the first Ivy tape, took down two guys guarding a door, I deactivated that door, and now I'm in a big room with a bunch of armed guards.

Oh, I haven't finished it yet and you're further than I am - I haven't had time to play it since Monday. I was basing the length on things I've read in reviews and impressions from other boards, which are pretty accurate.

I'm not completely sure, but I think you can keep exploring the Island with everything you have after you've finished the story, so you can get 100% on that same save-slot.

Yeah, once you beat the main story you can then continue on to explore the island with everything you have so you can get everything and get to 100%. You just can't start a brand new game all over again with everything you've already acquired.

Literally. So smooth you can't even stand on any stairs without sliding down them. Anybody else noticed this? Stop on stairs and you just slide to the bottom. WTF?

That sounds very convenient to me.
