Only able to carry two weapons? What a bunch of crap - that's the one thing they should not have changed from the early days of FPS, where you got to carry around the game's entire arsenal, and here they are taking cues from worst parts of modern-day FPS and ignoring the rest.

Haha, man, I can't wait to play this tomorrow when it unlocks in Steam. My expectations are so low, I still think I'll find it at least mildly enjoyable. It'll be nice to just finally play the game and move on.

It seems like this would be an interesting game to get a post mortem on from gearbox discussing what they started with and how they got to the release.

Shouldn't be too long.

Played it for about 30 minutes last night, it's basically what I expected. Gameplay that is from 12 years ago, and graphics that are from 5 years ago. Actually, the graphics aren't too bad at 1920x1080 at max settings and AA enabled. My only complaint so far is that mouse movement feels kind of weird, it's hard to explain, but it feels like there is some sort of inherit acceleration in mouse movement.
Only thing I really want is to be able to save anywhere. Holding more than two weapons would be nice as well.

This is a $30 game at most. Initially I was leaning towards saying it was a $20 game, the game play is that bad, but it's fairly long and has enough content to justify a $30 price.
One thing that stuck out to me was the difficulty. It was very inconstant. The final boss battle was easy, while some non-boss segments took me a dozen tries to get through. The problem was getting through these parts let me more frustrated than satisfied.
Part of the problem is the weapons and health systems are not tuned very well. You can only hold 2 weapons, and very limited ammo, especially for the big guns, which are the only ones most bosses are not immune to. I spent way too much time concerned about finding weapons/ammo. They get around this by giving you infinite ammo chests for the boss fights. And the health system means you can only take one or two hits before you have to hide and recover. So most boss battles turn into: fire until you are out of ammo (which takes 5 seconds), if you are hurting (which you are since it is near impossible to avoid most enemy fire) hide/run away until healed, run back to ammo crate, repeat.
This is what makes some of the non-boss encounters a real pain. You don't get an ammo crate, you sometimes don't get much cover, and while a Boss will usually take a beat between attacks three or more higher level regulars can kill you quickly if you don't have cover. Not that there is a cover system, other than the health setup requiring one. It's kind of sad that as the bad ass Duke Nukem one or two hits would send me running away like a little girl.
The limited inventory goes beyond just weapons and ammo. There are special items like steroids and beer but you can only carry 1 at a time. I ended up almost never using them because I didn't want to waste them. And there are annoying bits like the beer, which increases damage resistance, makes you stand still and take damage while you drink it. So if you find yourself hurt and without cover, using it will most likely kill you.

Hilarious, since the two boss battles that are in the demo are both exactly like this.

It's bad enough not to be worth $50, or $60 for the console, but that doesn't mean it's worthless. It has the feel of a $20 game, but with more content than you would expect from a budget title. It also switched things up from time to time, giving the game more variety of play than you would expect from a budget game.
I would give the game a 6 or 7 out of 10. I actually liked it more as it went along because I got use to the crappy gameplay mechanics.
It's around 23 chapters split up over about 8 similar areas with a couple of chapters being non-combat sections.

yep, but Insane only unlocks after beating the game once, so you'll need to play it twice for everything. It was frustrating enough on normal, I won't be trying insane.

I'm about 3 hours in. I find that I'm really enjoying it for what I was expecting. Sure, it feels like I'm back in the 90s again but that's ok. Its put a smile on my face a couple times and its easy to just pick up and play. Nothing groundbreaking, but still enjoyable for me. Playing on Normal, BTW.
