Rumor: Wal-Mart memo says 40GB PS3 to be 'replaced' in August
Alexander Sliwinski Jul 8th 2008 7:00PM

A Wal-Mart spreadsheet allegedly listing products that the company is having difficulty stocking states that the 40GB PS3 "will be replaced with [a] new model in early August." We received this sheet from an employee that's sent us solid information in the past though s/he can't confirm the origin of the note that the model will be replaced. Of course, in the eternal battle over semantics, "replaced" could simply mean some minor tweaks to the model and the addition of the DualShock 3.
For those keeping track, if the 40GB version actually ceases production it would be the third version of the PS3 to do so. Let's take a trip down memory lane: The 60GB PS3 was last seen in late 2007 roaming the plains of retail (some still speak of finding them in random places today) and the 20GB was officially declared dead in early 2007 after it went missing from retail for months. Perhaps next week's E3 will shed some light on the fate of the 40GB unit.
Update: Adjusted for the possibility that "replaced" could mean basic changes to 40GB model, like the addition of DualShock 3.

I am returning my 80gb this weekend, but I am just gonna get a 40gb in return. I think I got a defective one since it is louder than my 360 while just sitting at the XMB and then it only gets louder after putting a movie in.
It's not in an enclosed cabinet either it is sitting vertical on top the entertainment center so it not like it should be getting too hot.
Hopefully the 40 I get will not have any issues.

Did you try it horizontal? Not that it would make a difference, but you never know. My 60GB is noisy from time to time, nothing like the 360, but also not anywhere near the 'whisper-quiet' that everyone else seems to have.

Yeah, the 40gbs are quieter. My 60gb was loud a lot at first, I rearranged a few things (better airflow) and it isn't so bad now.

And even when I turn it on to use it's still ultra quiet!

My 60GB used to be "whisper quiet" but lately it has the fans kick in after a couple minutes, no matter what I'm doing, even if it's just sitting in the menus. They're not terribly loud, but it is noticeable. It's out in a open space as well.

Is anyone here having problems with the disc drive? The last few days, when I try to play a DVD, the PS3 doesn't recognize it. Usually, it takes a few attempts at ejecting and reinserting the disc before it randomly decides to work. Either that or I have to reset the default settings on the system, which is what Sony recommended. It seems like I've done that four or five times in the last week alone. This goes for DVDs, BDs, and PS3 games. Can someone please help me with this on what I should or could do to remedy this situation?

If you have a Playstation Underground account, you can now link your PSN account to it. There will be many benefits to this, including seeing your friends list online and a new portable ID. Here is a link to the FAQ:

I've complained about this before, but wanted to bring it up again for possible new ideas.
I have my PS3 hooked up directly to my Onkyo receiver via HDMI. As soon as a game loads, there is no sound. This doesn't happen all the time, but enough to be really annoying. It does not occur with Blu-Ray, it does not occur with the XMB, only in game. Most times, I have to completely shut down and restart.
I've googled this issue and I've seen a few complaints, but nobody has a solution.
Any thoughts?

I believe my Onkyo is the 604. I just have everything set to automatic.
HDMI handshake issue? Apparently, the PS3 has a long history of that.
I guess I could switch to a component cable, but that means I lose the better sound coming from HDMI for Blu-Rays.
