One thing that Activision has to consider is the sour taste they left in the consumer's mouth with the lack of DLC from previous versions. GH2 (or was it 3?) was touted as having "more DLC than any game" and it failed to live up to it. They are going to have to really have something special if they want people to return to them - and at a higher potential cost.

I'm hoping that the RB2 Ion drums will work with GH4, as I'd love to play some Eagles and VH.

What will be neat is to see what real artists can do with the studio. If real artists would even be interested.

I have faith the cream will rise to the top with the way GH has set it up. There will be some great custom tracks available.

Yeah, I'll mess with it for 10 minutes to make some stupid little thing, but I'm looking forward to some good user created stuff to download.

I don't know, I'm content with the DLC from Guitar Hero 3.

I will be lucky to spend 5 minutes on it. It is so far out of my element that it would just sound like a bunch of monkeys banging on instruments. But I have no doubt, and it will be a small percentage compared to what gets released, that there will be some AWESOME custom tracks for us to download for free. And I am totally fine with it because even though they stripped the vocals on the Hendrix song in GH 1 (Spanish Castle...), it was still a blast. There will be some great covers and some new stuff out there.

I'm going to make Pachelbel's Canon in D the way Jerry C (I think that's his name) arranged it in that youtube video.

bunkaroo 07-17-08 01:03 PM

I don't know how the music studio will compare to actual MIDI programming, but I've done a ton of that so we'll see what I can do.

There ya go, that's the type of stuff that could be really cool.

Well, here we go ladies and gents:

The ultimate guitar hero, Jimi Hendrix, is finally coming to the Guitar Hero game franchise, according to Janie Hendrix, who oversees his estate. The Hendrix estate, which had difficulty locating the original masters until now, has delivered multiple songs — including “Purple Haze,” “Foxy Lady” and “Little Wing” — to GH’s developers, although it’s not yet clear which tracks they will use. The next edition of the game, Guitar Hero: World Tour, hits stores October 27th.

Huge, but I hope they don't let missing masters stop them from releasing the others. I would rather have covers than none at all.

aktick 07-17-08 10:11 PM

Wait, wasn't there a Hendrix cover in GH1?

Yeah, and it was really good. There were rights issues with the estate and at the last minute they yanked the vocals and released it as instrument only.

Mad Dawg 07-18-08 09:03 AM

Very cool about Hendrix. It looks like the there'll be two songs in game - The Wind Cries Mary and Purple Haze (Live), with more via DLC.

Back to the music creator, looking at some of the customs created for the GH games probably gives one an idea of what we'll see. There are some folks that will note spam just because the can, and some who'll be really serious about fun stuff. I think the rating system they're putting in will be a good way to ferret out a lot of the nonsense. I'll be curious to see how it goes, although I know I'd never have the patience or capability to do anything worthwhile.

Kelkee 07-18-08 10:43 AM

Im wondering now how they are going to handle covers that are of really pro quality.

Satriani's "Always with Me, Always with You" would be rather easy for someone that knew what they were doing to crank out if the creator is all they are claiming it to be.

Michael Corvin 07-18-08 11:00 AM

All I know is in those instances, grab those tracks ASAP because I bet they disappear soon after.

lordwow 07-18-08 11:02 AM

The creator screams GarageBand to me.

I am under the impression that not suppling vocals to tracks and the creator, not GH, is not getting any commercial benefit allows them to escape liability.

Regardless, when it gets released, we all really need to help each other and maybe create a list so we can all find the best music.

shumway 07-18-08 12:47 PM

I wonder though, in a situation like Satriani where there aren't lyrics, if they can consider it infringement all the same.

I guess they would just say there is no commercial profit anywhere and it is fair use. They aren't facilitating infringement, merely giving tools available to consumers who can choose to do what they want with it and GH are not enabling a system for consumers to get paid off of their copies. I assume that is the rough argument.

I can only see a possible infringement claim occuring if consumer X charged for his creations, but that can't happen with the setup as we will all be able to download for free.

shumway 07-18-08 01:23 PM

I hope it does work that way. I can guarantee that Activision sought legal assurances before deciding to implement this feature. I also look forward to that top 1% of songs that will really be worth downloading.

Michael Corvin 07-21-08 08:46 AM

Found a scan of that GI mentioning Dream Theater.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c171/zygote7/11.jpg

Second paragraph, top-left.

Also here is an audio confirmation by Matt Helgeson from Game Informer. The 5/21 episode around the 16:30 mark. He also mentions that Neversoft isn't shying away from instrument-centric tracks. They want each solo tour to be fun on their own unlike RB1 where most of the tracks chosen are watered down to gear towards band play and in turn, solo play suffers.

Hardly worth noting due to the source, but someone on Portnoy's forum is claiming a friend saw the setlist and the Dream Theater track mentioned is The Dark Eternal Night. They are a close knit group on those forums, so it could be legit, but I wouldn't get my hopes up(sounds pretty hokey to me). Anyway, TDEN would be a huge get, it is a far better track than Panic Attack (in RB2).

UncleGramps 07-21-08 09:50 AM

I'm really curious to see what sort of things get made in the track creator. As others have said, I expect that only a very small percentage of players will make anything worthwhile, but it'll definitely be cool for everyone to enjoy the output of those dedicated few.

Kelkee 07-21-08 11:42 AM

If certain people can create songs like "Impulse" then it will be awesome.

pinata242 07-23-08 03:38 PM

RUMOR

Full setlist? Seems sketchy with the short "tours". Too much segmentation, but who knows...

If true, it blows away RB2's setlist for me by a country mile.

Although...
Spoiler:
Lateralus? Really? Seems a bit long for a game like this. Isn't over 9 minutes long?
