Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
THere's one Gamestop in town that's relatively decent. I went by yesterday and picked up a Wavebird that looked to be in good shape (haven't tested it out yet; never owned a GCN) and a copy of the Megaman X collection (was holding off on that until I found a GCN controller). Got out of there for less than $40 which didn't seem too bad to me considering the Megaman X collection is running about $30 or so used everywhere else...
The other GS stores in town, though, are not awesome at all. |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
More GameStop shenanigans, with some help from EA:
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is inching ever closer to release, and the developers have announced a bonus for those who preorder the game from GameStop. Squad Rush mode, a 4-on-4 multiplayer mode, will be a timed exclusive for those who preorder, with everyone else having to wait until 30 days after the game's release to get in on the action. But it gets more complicated than that. The GameStop exclusive only effects those who purchase the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game, as PC owners will be able to jump in the action at launch, no matter what retailer they buy from. It's also only in North America; the timed-exclusive won't exist in the rest of the world. PC owners and those gaming in other markets? You'll be fine. Of course, retailer-specific bonuses are nothing new, especially for GameStop. Yakuza 3 will have a "GameStop Exclusive Challenge Pack" that is, naturally, exclusive to GameStop. Those who pre-order Red Dead Redemption will get a free new cowboy outfit. The fourth round of the MAG beta is only available to those who pre-order from GameStop. Meanwhile, those who took the early plunge with Mass Effect 2 will get exclusive armor and a weapon. Not to be outdone, retailers like Amazon also offer numerous bonuses for those who preorder. Heavy Rain buyers get a free chapter of downloadable content. Star Trek Online buyers get exclusive access to a Borg bridge officer. Amazon also frequently offers discounts and store credit for preorders as well. While retailer-exclusive content is normal, this may the first case of a timed-exclusive game mode. New costumes are frivolous, but a game mode is not. Based on some of the comments from fans, they are none to pleased about the decision. At least the American ones who plan on purchasing the game on a console. Comments range from thankful ("Jeeze, how sleezy can you get? Thank God I'm getting it on PC.") to angry ("Gamestop is horrible. Devs, please stop making agreements with them!") to straightforward ("Gamestop is dumb.") But the overall message seems to be that fans aren't happy with the move. Why would anyone want to be forced to buy a game from a single retailer to have access to the full experience? Do exclusive deals like this actually drive sales? We contacted EA for comment but did not hear back as of press time. Whether it's to curry favor with specific retailers, drive sales of the game, or some other motivation, the ones who lose out in the end are the fans, especially those who choose to avoid GameStop. |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
It really sucks that have enough clout to pull that kind of crap. I'm glad I was already gonna wait for a price drop like I did with the first game.

Wanted to point out that GameStop just raised their price for the first games of both Mass Effect and Assassins Creed by $5 to $24.99. Both games are still $19.99 everywhere else, but GS figured they can wring a little extra cash from people who are hoping to get caught up on the first installments of these games before tackling the sequels.
Not to mention, they're charging $23 for a used copy of ME1... assholes. Is there any other major retailer that pulls this sort of shit? |

Some more new bullshit shenanigans from GS:
So now when you cancel a preorder you can't just get your deposit back in-store. Not only do you have to go online to print out a voucher, it's for a gift card and not the cash you put down. That there's some bullshit right there. And why would anyone continue to preorder from them when a majority of new releases can be found $5 to $10 cheaper on release date at places like amazon or Frys. |

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
It's a new thing they're trying out at a few stores for now. And it's for when you cancel a pre-order after the game's been released.

I'll bet they're trying this out to discourage some CAG-sih grey area type scam. :p |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
Yeah thank the retards at SD and CAG that preorder like 10 copies of a game, get the preorder bonuses and then return it so they can ebay the bonuses. Don't blame gamestop for making sure that people who get the preorder bonuses actually buy the game from tehm.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
How about making it so they get the bonus when the game comes out?

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
yeah, its for games like Madden 08 and stuff that we can no longer keep in our database. I'm sorry, but if you have a problem with trying to get $5 cash back from me for your 2 year old sports game, you can suck it.

So here's the crux of GS's problem:

You can almost hear that being said in that high-pitched voice you hear over a headset during a Halo 3 match too. |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
there's an easy way to solve the problem of people buying games to get freebies and then return them.
do what best buy does in that they ring up any freebies. it shows up on the receipt. that way, if the person returns the item, they deduct the amount of the freebie from the cost of the return. |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
Just returned my pre-order for Heavy Rain and got my $5 in cash back.
|
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
i put my $5 down in November at my local game stop for Modern Warfare 2, went to the midnight release 2 days later and thats all i paid for it! the idiot cashier handed me the game and didnt ring me out. I didnt leave until i was told "You're all set".
so MW2=$5 for me...i did get calls telling me my preorder was there. never bothered to do anything about it though |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII

That's a nice company policy. If I put money down on a game and decide not to buy it (lost the receipt, forgot about it, got a better deal elsewhere or whatever), there is no reason not to give cash back. None. I don't care if it is Madden '08.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
If I did not have Bad Company on order from amazon for 46 dollars, with a 20 dollar game credit coming after that, I would cancel my order because of that bull. I did the same thing with Army of Two because of the pre-order requirement for one part of the game, even though I had it pre-ordered, I was not about to support this direction in games. Bad Company is going to sell over a million copies its first week....but I do know Army of Two did not sell as well as the first, which made me happy..

Yeah, that's fine...but after 2-3 years you really expect us to keep track of that? You get your $5 credit back via a gift card paper thing that you print out at home. People should be happy we track that after so long, most places you would just be SOL after 3 years for your $5.

For a company the size of GS and with their resources, it's just embarrassing that they can't do the same. |
