The game has a great concept, but if you look at it, it's not exactly on the cusp of the cutting-edge. The graphic are very rudimentary, and I doubt it took too many resources to put together. I'd be stunned if it cost much more to make than the typical $30 puzzle game for the Wii. This is probably not a fair comparison, but look at all you get with GTAIV, and BB is only $10 less - even if it was half the price, it's still not a good deal, comparatively.

I'd be surprised if there's not an official MSRP drop on it sometime soon. It's a great game, but there's no name recognition there for the average consumer. At $30, they might be more willing to take a risk on it.

There's only a tiny handful of games worth $50 or 60 in my mind, and those are ones where I can get 50-100 hours (or more) of playtime.

I got about 3/4 through Boom Blox: I agree it shouldn't be a $50 game.

Funny that people expect to pay only $1 or less per hour of *interactive* entertainment, but are willing to pay $6+ per hour for *passive* entertainment (at a movie theater).

I totally agree, and even a short game has some resale value. Additionally, how do you calculate the hours of multiplayer spent on a game? In one night we had eight people enjoying Raving Rabbids for five hours. That is 40 hours right there. We have played bowling off of Wii Sports with too many people to count, and, call me crazy, but there is no question that I would pay $50 for that. Then there are games with replay value like Resident Evil 4. I played through the main game two or three times plus the side games. Regarding Boom Blox, I think it was worth the full price. The multiplayer has been fun with my wife--it reminds us of the Incredible Machine. I could also see playing it with a larger group. Not as crazy as Rabbids, but still fun.

More important (to me) than play time is the enjoyment factor. I have bought many games based on glowing reviews or positive feedback (or anticipation) on bulletin boards. RE4 was one that worked out for me, but Hotel Dusk (DS) was just not my thing. Regardless of how long it takes to play through, Hotel Dusk wasn't worth it because I just didn't feel like playing it. But suppose that I could play through Katamari Damacy in five hours and never touch it again. It would still be worth the full price because it was an unequaled experience. I respect those whose primary criteria is play time, and I would guess that nobody would play a game for 50-100 hours if they didn't like it. Just my ramblings, that's all.

I also agree that Boom Blox was too expensive. Plus its kind of hard for a third party Wii game to get attention when it's released between Mario Kart and Wii Fit.

And this is why we get the unending tide of sequel-itis on console games these days. Would Boom Blox have been a better deal at $30? Absolutely. Does every game need to have insanely expensive production values and/or licenses? no. Not taking a stab at you, I realize you're only considering relative worth on a personal level.

I do wonder about the involvement of Spielberg, or how much they paid him to have his name on the cover...

But those that disagree about it, have you actually played the game? I love the game, but there isn't a thing about the game that screams $50 title. Even with the multiplayer. If third party publishers are ever going to leave their mark on the system they're going to have to realize the value of their game and not just resort to standard $50 SRP pricing.

Imagine looking at the game at the store. Imagine you have no idea what the game is. Look at the box and read the description, what does the consumer see? Jenga for $50? No fucking way. Who's going to buy that?

I have the game. You're right that the box cover and marketing for this is terrible... no way I would've even noticed it among the rest of the shovelware if not for the glowing reviews. And by the time I had read the reviews, it had been out for almost a month!

I dunno, it seems to have enough gameplay in it, including multiplayer, to warrant a $50 starting price point to me.

I'm looking forward to seeing Boom Blox in the bargain bins in the near future. It'll be a steal at $20.

I've got Boom Blox, and it is fun, but I agree, it's more of a 30-40 $ game. Even considering the graphical limitations of the Wii, it's not a "gotta have/worth fifty bucks" title. That said, I'm not sure why. It's somewhat subjective. The gameplay, while fun and as accessible if not more so than Wii Sports, is somewhat limited--pulling, throwing, zapping. It looks like a kiddie game, but the single player mode gets harder and not kid-friendly pretty quick (when I say "kiddie game", I mean <8 years old). Though multiplayer (especially the Quick Sample mode) is great for family or a "party" game.
I see a little more than Jenga based on the box, but I can't speak as to the marketing, I don't watch tv; I have read some previews in game mags before release, that were generally positive, and a couple positive reviews.
Gameplay time is sort of odd for me--I usually get bored after 30-40 hours of a game, and a "pick up and play" game like Boom Blox could potentially be fun for a long time. I don't regret paying 50 for it (I got the 10$ CC GC too, so that helped), but I think 30-40 would be more "fair"--of course then it might have the stigma of a cheap game like Billy the Wizard. I'm surprised it hasn't sold more, the cute energetic cover would get lots of kids interested I think. But yeah, competing with MK and Fit is a challenge as well.

I think it looks kind of cool from the scan.

Mario Galaxy is $34.99 over at Amazon right now (at least for the next hour and a half).

It's the Lightening deal right now...

Here is the OP about the deals:

Nintendo UK mag promises Animal Crossing deets
Posted Jul 2nd 2008 2:45PM by Chris Greenhough

Animal Crossing is coming. This is a fact. What form it will take when it does arrive is a deeper mystery. Somebody at the UK edition of the Official Nintendo Magazine knows the answer to this, damn them, and they aren't afraid to shout about it.

The above image (art from Animal Crossing: Wild World on the DS) appears on the "Coming Next Month" page in the latest issue of the mag, and was dutifully scanned and internetalized by a Go Nintendo reader for all of us to speculate about. "It's been a while," reads the accompanying caption, keeping us on tenterhooks. "It's time to revisit an old friend. How's your village doing these days?"

All of which is very exciting, but by the time the next edition of Official Nintendo Magazine appears (August 1st), we may have already heard more from E3. Either way, we'll know something about this game soon. Prepare your Golden Shovels, everybody!
Hooray! Maybe we will be getting some details at E3. This will finally give me a reason to play the Wii.

Chris

I see that Rock Band is available in a disc-only edition, as well as the bundle. Does anyone know if it's compatible with the Guitar Hero guitar, or is that asking too much of them?

No. Red Octane has pretty much said that their guitars will not be Rock Band compatible with Wii or PS3. They may even find a way to break compatibility with future Xbox360 releases.
