Ok. Thanks fujishig for the info about zooming in with the Mako. Didn't know that. Now, I'm having trouble with that same mission on Ferros, where the colonists are under mind control. You get 5 grenades with the special gas, but there are like 16 colonist. I pretty much can only save about 10 of them, and i'll end up killing the rest, but I don't want to do that. God, this game is frustrating.

Using melee attacks doesn't kill them. Just run up really close to them and hit the attack button. If you're close enough, you'll whack them instead of shooting them.

There's also a crate of grenades about halfway through the camp (right around the point where you meet the camp leader when you first get to camp).

Didn't know about the other grenades. I was able to save all 16.

As for the Mako, I found that as long as you stayed a fair distance away, taking out targets and avoiding anything incoming was simple. Just be able to move your Mako a couple of feet in either direction.

Now that I've finished it I have some questions for people who played through it doing good. The spoiler below will have spoilers for the ending itself and the end parts chosing Renegade options.
Spoiler:

-The scene where Saren is on the hover pad at the end, what's the good way to resolve it? I chose the Renegade answers twice and convinced him to kill himself.

-Is there any difference if you chose to save the council instead of letting them die during the ship battle at the end? I let them die.

-What does the ambasador say if you tell him that a new council should be created instead of starting a new one with Humans only (assuming you chose to let the original council die)?

I let the Captain become the new leader at the end. I was hoping it would let me kill the ambasador somehow. Sadly, that wasn't the case.

don't forget the "A" button to allow you to run up really fast next to them in order to knock them out with melee

I will say I was about to give up on this game. But, after getting through a few "missions", I've found new respect for it. The game really opens up and is pretty deep once you get going. The combat is a bit repetitive, but it's not anything that will detract me, since there is a great backstory that keeps it going.

I have a love/hate relationship with Mass Effect. I love the story so far. I love playing Renegade and
Spoiler:
shooting Fist in the head after getting the information from his was very satisfying

But i hate the combat. It feels so sloppy and i just wish i had some melee stuff. I want to be able to queue up some actions (like in KOTOR) and have them take effect. I'm playing an Adept because i was hoping using the biotics might be easier than trying to gun things down. So far... not so much. I wish i could assign my spells to more buttons to use them a little easier.

Me = idiot.

I've played through almost the entire game, and I had no idea the Mako had a cannon. I've been using the guns the entire time. Doh!

I didn't realize you could skip over conversations with the X button until I went through the Benezia conversation a few times...

For not implementing a better (or any) type of tutorial.

None of you are idiots. Bioware, while created a great game, totally dropped the fall on the UI and any kind of tutorial for the UI and gameplay. I found the Mako's cannon by accident and it wasn't until late in the game I realized I could put two upgrades on any weapon. And even then, I never bothered to switch them around, as it was simply to much a hassle. I made it thru the game just fine with a standard rifle and two early upgrades.

Wait ... what? The Mako has a cannon!? Why didn't somebody tell me!?!

It's the right shoulder button, for those -- like me and Deftones -- who didn't realize.

Here's a bunch more Mass Effect tips:

I also didn't know you couldn't upgrade the weapons with more than 2x upgrades until about the end of the game either.

I think I take the cake for stupidity in this game.

Spoiler:
If you let them live (by saving their ship), they let you choose either the Captain or Ambassador to be on the council to serve humanity. I also picked the Captain. As for the 1st Saren battle, I actually had to fight him to kill him. Then he gets "reincarnated".

Overall, this was a hell of a game. In terms of gameplay, it wasn't great. But, for what it lacks there, it more than makes up for in storyline/plot. It was like a great sci-fi flick. The ending music on the credits gave me a Blade Runner vibe for some reason.

Is there a list somewhere of what characters die in the game and where they can die?

I only had one die on me (unsure if more can die) and it was only because I had to make a decision between one or another.

I think that the composers said they were aiming for a Blade Runner feel. I think I read that earlier in this thread.

Maybe I'm missing something too...

More than one upgrade on armor? How? When you say more than 2 upgrades on weapons, does that mean the weapon upgrade and the ammo upgrade or can you really use 2 weapon upgrades?

I just realized recently (thanks to this thread) that I could zoom the mako cannon. That made a HUGE difference.

I take it we don't have a lot of instruction manual readers on this board.

My latest DAMED (Dumb Ass Mass Effect Discovery): If you crouch (click left thumbstick) while aiming the sniper rifle, your sight will stop wiggling around and remain steady on your target.

Actually, I did read the manual, I think I just missed this part.

But you have to admit, the ME manual doesn't cover a lot of stuff.

Once they quit making nice colored instruction manuals, I quit reading them.
No joke.

You're right, the manual doesn't cover nearly enough material for a game that is this... dense.

This game desperately needed tutorials, at the very least a combat one. I'm about 13 hours into the game and have just reached level 19 or 20, and I'm just barely getting used to the combat.

Still, I'm enjoying the game, combat and all, much more than I thought I would based on the word of mouth that I'd been hearing.

Anyone have any tips for (what I assume is) the final battle:

Spoiler:
I'm in the Citidal and I've talked Saren into blowing his brains out. I reprogram the Citidal and send Garrus and Wrex to make sure Saren is dead. He, of course, gets possessed by Sovereign and proceeds to kick my ass.

Once I fought him for about 45 minutes and got his health about halfway down. I even made it to the cut scene where Admiral What's-His-Name tells everyone not to fall back, because we'll never have a better chance to defeat Sovereign! Basically, my strategy was to hide behind the wall at the north end of the room, stick my head out and shoot at him, then duck behind that wall and wait for my shields to recharge. After 45 minutes of doing this, though, I screwed up and got killed.

Ugh. I know the final boss should be tougher than all the fights in the rest of the game, but I hate when the final boss is so disproportionately tougher. Turning it up to eleven is one thing. This fight feels like they turned it up to six hundred and eleven.

I can't help you. I beat him without dying or any party members dying.

What class are you?
I was Renegade, with Ashely and Garrus.
