it left a ring about 3mm wide the entire way around. it wouldn't even get past the opening credits.

I buffed it for about 6 minutes with a microfiber cloth and got it to work. I'm going to talk to my manager-friend this week to see if he has a brand new one in stock and swap them out
dude, buy some D-skins. Sheesh.

This issue is so upsetting to me, even though mine hasn't had a problem so far *knocks wooden desk*, but my best friend who got his the same time as me had his die. If they're acknowledging that this is such a huge problem and by looking at this forum, it clearly is, then they should be working harder to make it right.

I read that people who get a refrub are having trouble playing the XBLA games they paid for. From what I understand now they can only play while signed into Live or something. That really doesn't seem right since it's entirely MS' fault that they don't have their original unit. I love the 360 and would love to cut them some slack, but they don't deserve any. I feel so bad for all of you who are being put through this inconvenience and expense (like abrg above paying for his shipping). That ain't right.
They shipped coffins early on, stopped for a period of time (or else the rep was misinformed), then started again.

I'm actually glad they didn't ship me a coffin. It cut the time I would've been without the 360 in half.

As long as they are on right I rarely have an issue. I also reuse(cheap ass) them which is generally when I get the disc error.

They run about $1 each. You can buy packs of 5 at Wal-Mart and I've seen 20 packs at Staples. I bought a 50 pack off ebay and another through a cheap link at froogle.

Even if they aren't 100% at least you won't be permanently damaging your games.

ill definitely give it a try for some of my "problem" games.

It's the 360. Has to be, in which case I should probably just get it swapped out for a new one.....again.

I'm sure it is, but I think such a small investment per game($1) would be worth it to guarantee they not get scratched beyond playability. I'd say it's at least worth checking into for $5 for a trial run.

I wouldn't say I'm a huge proponent of them, but they work for me on the 360 and they work great on all my kids DVDs. I know miyu or someone else on here said they didn't have much luck with them so YMMV.

eh, 5 bucks not to go through this headache, if only for an extended period, would definitely be worth it as long as I could put them on properly.

seems like you'd almost need a straight razor, as if you're putting on tint

Nah, they snap on. But if one of the snaps isn't tight enough the drive won't like it. Easy peasy.

I put on a D-skin on the Gears of War disc. My Elite sometimes will not load the game.

Mother f'er, I just got another ring of death. This is the second time this has happened. The first one crapped out on me less than 30 days after I bought it. Exchanged that one, no problems for a year and now I get this. This is ridiculous. I'm calling MS right now and I must be holding for at least 20 minutes now.

Damn M$, I was excited to play Gears of War too.

Edit - wrote about the cs experience on my blog, link on the sig. Repair time is ridiculous.

I got mine back....seems to play fine. The DVD drive seems a bit louder, so I'm assuming it was different than what I had before. Oh well, at least it works. Downloaded a BUNCH of demos and finally played NCAA 08.

Here is something to make things easier for your guys

Microsoft's US Xbox repair website now online
Posted Aug 04, 2007 at 06:27AM by Victor B.

If your Xbox is in need of repairs, and you're not sure where to turn, we've got some information that might help you. We recently found out that Microsoft has an online service center of sorts for people in the US.

The website, which is linked below, allows you to register your console, whether it be the Xbox or the Xbox 360, to your Windows Live ID. If you need to have it repaired, you can use the site to setup a repair operation for your beleaguered console. Best of all, you can also track the status of the repairs through the system, if only to ensure peace of mind for your gaming investment.

The site will also differentiate between in-warranty and out-of-warranty repairs, though the new terms of Microsoft's warranty should mean that your 360 is still under warranty. Still, just in case you need your original Xbox fixed or you somehow voided your warranty, using the site will net you a US$ 5 discount on repairs.

Truth be told though, we hope none of our readers have to use the service. Still, if you happen to be in trouble, at least you know where to turn.

I believe it was a refurb, as the serial # changed. I didn't check the manufacture date....totally forgot. I will check one of these days.

So what is the turnaround time looking like? I just called to get my coffin, and they said it would take 4-6 weeks. Does it really still take that long?

MS dismisses 'major design flaw' reports
Monday 6-Aug-2007 2:35

Microsoft has responded to an experts' evaluation of the Xbox 360's heat problems, in which a major design flaw is claimed.

The evaluation, carried out by Japanese news source Nikkei, had a thermo design expert analyze the 360's heat radiation system. The test found that a flaw in Xbox 360's design means that it could achieve temperatures of over 100 degrees in the summer (that's hot enough to make a cup of tea).

The expert pointed out that, "the heat sink on the graphics LSI is so small, I wonder if it can really cool down the board." Apparently, Microsoft downsized the graphics LSI heat sink so that the DVD drive could be placed on top.

Worryingly, as well as a launch console Nikkei also tested a machine repaired in May 2007, and the heat sink was still the same downsized unit.

Responding to the report, a Microsoft spokesperson told CVG, "There is no single root cause or systemic issue with any of the Xbox 360 consoles."

With such a complex consumer electronic product that contains more than 1700 different components and 500 million transistors, there are obviously many things that can malfunction at any given time. The vast majority of customers who own Xbox 360 consoles continue to have a terrific experience. "As Microsoft didn't participate in the test, we cannot comment on any findings."

It'll be interesting to see if PS3s then, which also have plenty of transistors and technical innards, start breaking down in the same quantity as Xbox 360s. In the meantime, we're keeping an extra fan on our consoles until the autumn arrives.

Thanks Capt. I'm still trying to add logos and avatars for all the writers. The wheel is turning really slow but at least we're moving.

so have people who are not having the RROD but are having other issues (freezing) called and had luck now that the warranty has been extended? I need to call back with my existing case number where they were going to give me free shipping both ways but charge me $100 for the 360 I bought in January 06 that randomly locks up. this is my second unit so I'm hoping it goes as smoothly as the first exchange did.

Mine wasn't the RROD - but 1 red bar, and error code E74 - a GPU fault.

Yeah - you should get one saying they are working on it now.

I got no updates at all. But usually, yes, you'll get e-mail notifications when they receive the unit, ship a refurb back, et cetera.
