Sorry. Even though he can't spell he pretty much pointed out the main differences between the 360 & PS3 and stated why the PS3 is starting to appear like the better deal and I didn't see it as a console bash (especially since I am starting to feel this way). This is a thread where we ARE discussing that EVERY 360 is defective.

I guess I am just irritated & disappointed. I was a early adopter Xboxer and turned a lot of my friends on to it. Now I want to join in again but just don't like the things I keep reading about the 360 (and this is from 360 owners & fans). I didn't mean to encourage console bashing but there have to be other Xboxers out there that feel my pain.

I normally just own one home gaming system at at a time. I am not one to have all game systems because I just don't have the time for that (so why waste the money). The 360 has the games I want but it appears the system sucks. The PS3 looks great and has BR but is crazy expensive and has few games I want. I have never been interested in the Wii. I have a DS but hardly have time to play it like I would like.

As for gaming via computer...Ugh. Not my thing.

I guess I am just going to wait it out and hopefully see some better functioning 360s by or after the holiday. I will miss the Halo 3 launch but I don't feel like putting down the money for a 360 and a game (about $450 after tax) just to know that it will break on me eventually and then I will be bitching in this thread more than I already have. Crap.

Well, the thread is called "Microsoft Surprisingly Admits That ALL Xbox 360s Are Defective." I think it's reasonable to assume that some posts are not going to be flattering to the 360.

Argh, I didn't realize it was a $250 difference. I guess I'll just wait on the sidelines some more.

$350 is a pretty good price. If it turns out newly produced 360s are not defective and quieter than the original units, then I'll probably snatch one up. Not sure how we'll know whether they're defective-free, though.

alot of people cant afford $600 so they go with the $360 system, but i dont think its a good invesment,
i mean for $250 you get a system that wont brake, with a free Blu-ray player and free online and some other great features like dvd upscaling and such.
That is some great logic there. You pay $250 more to get free features.

I must say reading posts like that makes me think Sony's marketing team is fucking brilliant.

I guess its up to "the person" who is upset about all these messed up 360's. I personally am not pissed that my 360 has bitten the dust...since XMAS I have been having so much fun and making more friends over @ XBOXLIVE than I do at work! Yeah, I gonna miss the Halo 3 launch.....but I got 3 kids!....not like I am going to have allot of time to "finish the fight" any time soon? besides, most of you ladies(I know you are out there) and gentlemen have more than one 360 or other systems to satisfy "the savage beast"! So I guess what I am trying to say, calm down people! life is to short, yeah be upset, but don't let the anger consume you...."your "LIVE" friends will still be there when you "finally" get your system back......
...........( I hope I did not come off sounding too much like a parent)!!!!

Also, while sadly the 360 leads the pack in hardware failure I've seen some shady goings on with my Wii too. I've been having Disc Read Errors and Lockups requiring me to unplug the unit and plug it back in. Now I don't have a PS3 so i can't personally comment on any problems but I've read about problems others have had right here on this forum.

Either way it seems all 3 consoles in this Generation have seen some problems...some more than others.

The refurb unit (mfg date 6/2006) I was sent in exchange for my RROD'ed original, is dramatically quieter for DVD playback than the launch-day unit I originally sent in. It's a step in the right direction.

I agree - it's hard to know for certain if they'll no longer be defective. However, considering the horrible publicity Microsoft has received for all this and the fact that their free repair plan is reportedly costing them in the region of $1 billion, I'm guessing that they put a lot more effort into making sure they came up with a permanent solution to the overheating problem than they did the first time around. They sent me a brand new unit (August 2007) for my dead one, and I feel confident that I won't be having the same problem. I could be wrong - I just think that they did some serious testing on their new heat sink design or whatever it was they did to fix this before they changed it all.

Any updates on the reliability of the new consoles that MS has been releasing? I've been waiting for a "fix" for a couple months now. Dropping almost $400 on a system is a big deal for me, and I really do not want to deal with a high probability of failure rate for such an investment. At the same time, when Too Human comes out, I might just have to pull the trigger, reliable or not.

Why would they do a recall? Why not just send new PB's to people like they did with the Original Xbox?

With a 3 year warranty, what do you lose with your 'investment'? The worst would seem to be a few weeks without it while its being repaired for free. As an investment, any console is a terrible idea. Buy it because you want to play the games, not because you want to sell it for a fortune later.

Disagree... Save Ferris, your points are understood, but that's not what some of us meant by investment (well, at least not me). Investment is not necessarily involves in solely money, but time as well (opportunity cost). If something is $400, i expect it to operate w/o failure under normal usages for at least three years (most people expect longer period of time). I totally understand the warranties and all. However, the repairs and stuffs under the warranty period should be reserved for "truly" defected products (i.e. like 2-5% bad apples in the whole batch). If i want to invest $400 in a game machine (not for resale, but entertainment values), i expect it to work for a while w/o worry about failure (FW updates are different, usually make the machine better, so they are add-on values). Now, if MS compensates you for the "down" time reasonably/handsomely, that's a different story. Anyhow, calling for a box, packing the console, shipping it and then wait for another (unpack it, rewire it) cost way too much in opportunity cost for me.

He clearly did not mean "investment" in that way.

Also, "the worst" (weeks without a console) in this case is absolutely unacceptable, especially when a good number of people have had multiple consoles break or get sent easily breakable consoles back. You're right, one return probably isn't that bad, but multiple returns or getting sent an equally terrible console back is unbearable.

I would be upset if something I bought for $50 broke within the first year I had it and I had to send it in repeatedly to get fixed, much less a $400 console that is supposed to last for years and that MS seems to have knowingly poorly manufactured.

I've got a 360 that's been running well for about a year and has yet to break, but I'm somewhat pre-agitated over what I'm going to have to do when this thing inevitably dies.

Some of you sound way too old to even consider buying this console. Stick to PCs and high end home theater equipment.

But it's not fully covered for 3 years. It's only covered for the RROD which, while by far the most common problem, isn't the only commong issue with the system. Mine randomly freezes but hasn't RROD (though my first one did). They won't repair mine for free since my included warranty period is up and it's not a RROD. Trust me, I tried. If all issues were covered, you'd not see me in this thread. However, the fact that there are other common (albeit not as common as the RROD) issues with the 360 that are not being covered is lame.

Cardiff Giant, My 360 died last Tuesday, it did not have the rings also...but I could not play it for a week because it would freeze up! usually in the middle of a high octane round of Halo 2. then it got so bad that it could not get passed the start up screen! the coffin has been on its way since last Wednesday. Luckily for me, I am still covered under the warranty. Did you ever find out what your 360's problem was?

Thanks,
XROD924

Wrap a sweater around the 360 and turn it on, it will eventually overheat and RROD, then call MS and they will fix it under warranty. Also, if you just tell them you have the RROD, they dont have a way to verify it, once it arrives, it just gets fixed and you get a refurb anyway, so just tell them you have the RROD and get it replaced.

Are you saying that you can be too old to play video games? Video games aren't just for kids anymore... If I am physically able, I hope to still be gaming in my retirement on the PS10 and Xbox360^5.

I think you're right. They claim they check them but I think they're getting so many in that they just get them in, toss them into the "to be refurbed" bin, and write up an order for another refurb to be sent out.

Also, although mine was RROD'ing it was intermittent and of course it wouldn't do it while I had the guy on the phone the first time I called. Hell, they know the consoles are fucked up so who's to say you didn't get a RROD?

-----
I called again today and asked the status of my 360. The girl said the unit was "repaired" it on 9/14, which I think is total bullshit because when I asked if I would be getting the same one back she confessed that it could go either way. She said I could get the same one(yeah right) or a refurb at this point but that I would be getting it...or should I say something... back "any day now". I have a feeling I'll be getting a refurb.
