System Shock wasn't an FPS. FPS stands for first person shooter. System Shock is first person, but not so much shooting. Calling System Shock an FPS is like calling Thief an FPS. Thief was a first person game, but it revolved around stealth and avoiding fighting. |

System Shock and Thief and both FPS games. No reason to take it so literally, at this point it's defined a genre and arguing against it seems purposely picky. Reminds me of folks wanting to call stealth games like Thief "first person sneaker."
It's most definitely not an FPS. FPS distinctly stands for first person shooter. Thief is first person, but it's not a shooter. Not every first person game is an FPS. Remember those old first person RPGs like Wizardry and Might & Magic? They're first person, but they're not shooters. They're first person RPGs. |
re: DOOM (5/13/2016: XB1, PS4, PC)
Nope I disagree, still FPS games. Like I said, the genre has moved beyond taking the word "shooter" literally and encompasses just about all first person games even if the term doesn't really fit all games. Most genre names don't make complete sense anyway and arguing otherwise is just being nitpicky to me in this context.
Just like RPG would technically encompass most games since you're taking the role of another character. |

Just like RPG would technically encompass most games since you're taking the role of another character. Also, Portal. That's a first person puzzle game. There's no action or shooting in it. (Shooting the portal gun doesn't count because it's not used in an action-based sense but rather just to solve puzzles.) Heck, many racing games and/or flight simulators are also in first person. You're confusing FPS with first person. FPS is a genre, but first person is merely a camera viewpoint like third person or first person or isometric or whatever. Not all first person games fit in the FPS genre. Saying that all first person games are in the FPS genre is like saying all 2D sidescrollers are in the platformer genre like Mario. Nope, there are 2D sidescrollers like Contra and Double Dragon too which aren't platformers at all. |

Did you ever play Mirror's Edge? It's a first person parkour game, and I don't recall it having any shooting or any action whatsoever. It was just parkour in first person.

True, but remember that DOOM 3 came out over a decade ago and Carmack has always been technology-focused.

You can throw as many examples as you want, but I covered that already with my previous posts. It's funny to see you take "shooter" literally, until it's not convenient like with Portal. And there are guns in Mirror's Edge.
The Portal gun simply does not count. There is not a single enemy in the game that you shoot with the gun. It is used only to solve puzzles and nothing more. FPS is a genre. First person is a camera viewpoint. All FPS games are first person, but not all first person games are in the FPS genre. This isn't rocket science. |
re: DOOM (5/13/2016: XB1, PS4, PC)
You could just say Elder Scrolls isn't considered an FPS for a reason.
It's been a decade but I recall System Shock still had a decent amount of shooting to it, so I consider it an FPS. Unless I'm mixing SS2 in with that. |

I didn't know there were guns in Mirror's Edge. I never actually played it myself. I just watched others play bits and pieces of it years ago. Still the main point is that it is not a shooter game, even though it has shooter elements. It is a platforming/parkour game. Most games borrow elements from other genres, but they don't belong to that genre. For example, is Mario an action-based game? It has action-based elements like jumping on a turtle's head and killing it. However, Mario is not in the action-based genre because action isn't its main purpose. Mario is a platforming game and belongs in the platforming genre.

Really, like I said earlier I didn't see the point in being nitpicky about what System Shock is in this context. Especially when genre names don't make sense and shouldn't be taken so literally (again, RPG). I consider a lot of games to be an FPS in addition to other genres, which often gives you something stupid like this - System Shock 2 is a first-person shooter action role-playing survival horror video game |
re: DOOM (5/13/2016: XB1, PS4, PC)
Mario is a shooter too! Mario shoots fireballs! Mario is also survival horror because of the haunted house levels! Mario is also an RPG because you play the role of Mario!
Mario is a platformer shooter survival horror role playing game. :p |

Yeah. Speaking of which, i'm still surprised at how the iD Tech engines trailed off as far as being used in other properties. Used to be right up there with Unreal, but few used the Doom 3 engine and i don't think anything came from RAGE.

re: DOOM (5/13/2016: XB1, PS4, PC)
Ah, didn't realize it got used for Wolfenstein although that makes sense. Carmack leaving felt like it really took away any final reverence I had for id, but still looking forward to this too.

Been waiting for this since I got the Beta Code Flyer inside Wolfenstein: The New Order game. The game play video is pure classic FPS and DOOM couldn't look any better....

re: DOOM (5/13/2016: XB1, PS4, PC)
Looks alright, I think the soundtrack will make or break it for me, the thing I loved about old id games is that they were atmospheric as hell, but not in a survival horror sort of way. Not really feeling the underground industrial design setting.

re: DOOM (5/13/2016: XB1, PS4, PC)
I liked Doom 3 a lot but the pacing wasn't Doom to me. This one seems like it's bringing back how chaotic it got at times w/ a shit ton of awesome in it.
The music will definitely be a big part to how good this game is. EDIT: That Doom 3 that came on the 360, how good was it? I'm in the mood for Doom now but don't know about that one. Better just to keep w/ my old Doom 3 or what? |
re: DOOM (5/13/2016: XB1, PS4, PC)
What's your old Doom 3? The PC version or the Xbox version? The Xbox 360 version was pretty much PC perfect and much better than the standard Xbox version, but they made it easier by including a flashlight toggle.
FWIW, Doom 3 is 11 years old now and should run well on higher settings on most non-dedicated graphic cards. |
re: DOOM (5/13/2016: XB1, PS4, PC)
Xbox.
I'll get the 360 one. It was a bit too much survival horror too much for me but it was a damn good game. Not what Doom is but it was damn good take on it. |

Well...it's about time...or at least getting close....
