id shows off new game engine

June 11, 2007 - Over at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, going on as this is typed, John Carmack is showing off id's secret new game engine. MacRumors.com is reporting that Carmack took the stage and showed off the engine for the first time.

The demonstration apparently showcased an "insanely detailed world" made up of 20GB of textures. Carmack says developers will have an unprecedented level of flexibility when building things with the engine. Textures can be manipulated until the cows come home with little to no performance hit. Carmack also said he can "build game first, then throw artists at it," although it is unclear at this time exactly what is meant by that.

The demonstration was put together in just 10 days. id will be showing off more of the engine at E3 next month. We'll have more information on this new technology as it surfaces.
If I remember right, the last time id showed off a game engine, it was the Doom 3 engine which of course led to Doom 3. Could this new engine be Doom 4? If so, I hope Doom 4 goes back to the roots of Doom 1 and 2 with legions of demons coming at you at once instead of just one or two at a time like in Doom 3.

Whatever engine they make, it had better have better multiplayer capabilities than the Doom 3 engine.

Michael Ballack 06-12-07 07:12 AM

They better not have cheap compartments in walls that just open up when you walk past. I also want more variety in maps than a bloody lab. More levels like the hell level equals more gooder. :D

The last doom made me want to change my forum name.

starseed1981 06-12-07 08:08 AM

If they make a Doom 4 it will probably be a remake of Doom 2:)

Ghym 06-12-07 09:59 AM

I read in another article somewhere, that the new engine is for a new IP.

edit: found it.

Yup, iD has mentioned before they're working on a brand new game. I'm interested in seeing what they come up with.

looks like Duke Nukem Forever will get another code change and another delay

I don't know, the Doom 3 engine seems to be doing alright to me.

For someone with the status and cred of Carmack, you would think he would at least get a proper haircut and learn how to dress. I'm referring to what I saw in the video of the engine that was in the following video.

He's pimp, give him a break.

With that said, I say let Doom rest. It was obvious that , while DOOM 3 wasn't an engine to scale (unlike the Source engine), it was still a solid engine. The main thing is, people got a bad taste of it due to poor game design with DOOM 3. ID software always makes solid game engines, that never are really taken advantage of until someone else gets ahold of them.

Doom 4 Reportedly Planned for Next-Gen, Rage 2 Canceled
Rumors fly regarding Bethesda’s shooters.

Bethesda has confirmed that a version of Doom 4 was scrapped and has been restarted in a different form.

“An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that Id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect,” Bethesda's VP of marketing and public relations Pete Hines told Kotaku. “As a result, Id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we’re ready to talk about the Doom 4 Id is making, we will let folks know.”

Kotaku further reports that Doom 4 is now planned for next-generation consoles but “the actual release date is up in the air.” The title reportedly began as a Call of Duty-style shooter but has since evolved past that. The team behind 2011’s Rage was allegedly working on Rage 2 but that project has since been canceled and the team has now joined Doom 4 development. Kotaku’s source is optimistic that the game will eventually see the light of day despite development turmoil.

Doom 4 was originally announced back in 2008 but Id has been mostly quiet ever since. In 2011, Id president Todd Hollenshead said “what we're really focused on is getting Rage out the door. Once we're to that point, then we want to transition to how we're going to present Doom 4, what are the talking points, how do we introduce it. Because that stuff hasn't even been determined yet. We're talking about that internally."

Wasn't Id's Rage engine supposed to be a big deal game-changer?

Qualities of that game aside, the engine seemed to be more than solid, yet we haven't seen a single other game use it.

I'd guess Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.

id Software President Todd Hollenshead Leaves Company

id Software president Todd Hollenshead has left the company, Bethesda has confirmed to IGN.

"After many years with the studio, Todd Hollenshead decided to leave id Software to pursue other personal interests," Bethesda's Pete Hines told us. "While Todd was not part of the development teams, he was an integral part of id Software’s success as the business head of the studio and we wish him the very best in his future endeavors."

Hollenshead's role at id Software changed from CEO president following ZeniMax's acquisition of the studio in 2009.

Bethesda and id recently "refocused" Doom 4 as it wasn't up to the "quality and excitement" the developer, publisher, and fans would have expected. Bethesda did the same for Prey 2 as well. id's Rage 2 was allegedly canceled, with members of that team making their way onto the troubled Doom 4 project.

It's weird to think that Bethesda holds the keys to both the Doom and Quake franchises, two of the most popular gaming franchises of the '90s, and they've done not a single thing with them (other than an HD remake of Doom 3).

I would bet money we'll see Bethesda announce and release Fallout 4 long before anything happens with Doom 4.

Fuck, we'll probably see Valve release Half-Life 3 before Bethesda puts out Doom 4.

Doom 4 is definitely not currently under development... ;)

They need to just remake Doom 2, but do it Metroid (GC) style where all the levels interconnect into one giant world.

I'd play that.

It doesn't seem like it's for a lack of trying. iD has struggled the last decade... they make cool looking tech, but wrapping it together in a game has been less then great.

I was thinking more Super Mario World style, where each level unlocks several and you have a secret hub ("star") world.
